coffee, tea or me?

The sound of his footsteps echoed down, bouncing off between the walls of the alleyway, the street lamps allowing only a minimal amount of light to pour into the back lanes of the streets. His fingers played at the hem of his shirt while he took a swig of his beer, discarding the bottle by the side once he'd downed the last sip.

This particular alley was all too familiar to him, memories of his past filling every corner of the place. He remembered his first kill; he'd shot a guy in the far left corner with a revolver gifted to him by the boss. He was subconsciously attached to the place, so much that even now as he stumbled forward, eyes blurry from the effects of alcohol, he'd ended up at the very place where his guilt had stemmed from.

He held back a sob, deciding it was pointless to wish and cry for his old life back, when he knew for certain it was all over.

His life back then had been nothing but full of excitement and risk, though it was the exact thrill of living in constant darkness and danger, the knowledge that death was never too far away, that kept him on edge.

He craved danger, enjoyed seeking death out. He'd never been the sort to back away when things got tough, instead, he head-butted into any given situation with ease. When he looked back now, he'd certainly outdone himself. He'd pushed boundaries and tested new limits, but one bad decision made, and his eventful life had instantly come to a halt.

He looked up wistfully at the vast sky, squinting just enough so he could make out where the stars were, hidden behind puffs of clouds. The night would've almost been too quiet, too lonely and melancholic, had it not been for the soft pitter patter of footsteps tailing after him and the telltale shadow of another presence not too far behind.
