I’ve watched this video too many times, in order to understand what they’re saying. By the end of it, I’ve realised what ‘hiding in plain sight’ really means. There are 2 important parts in the dialog and those I interpreted only. They talk quickly, in low tones and each one of them has different pronunciation, so it wasn’t an easy process and I could have heard some words wrong. The only thing that can’t be confused though, is their reaction…

C: Very frilly! S: It’s, very frilly… Clever Way To Cover It!

They’ve walked a few steps, C started a casual conversation to ‘camouflage’ the previous one and they posed in front of the cameras. After being photographed, C continued speaking and then she turns to S (at 0:38sec) and said in a more intimate way…

C: What’s that smell, you smell so good (or your smell ’s so good)

8th July 2020, regular and calm weekday , Wednesday evening.

Caitriona is having an IG live on her bookclub  account at 8:00 pm UK time. She is charming, lovely and chatty. The boiler is banging behind again, Eddy is moving around, making noises.

BUT WHAT?

While the discussion is going on at around  14:20-14:23 there is a child voice, a  shreek behind. Cait is also hearing that, got frozen in her speak for a moment.

And again around 14:40.

Between  16:50-17:05, the little child is telling sg to someone. Is there someone else too at the other side of the door ?

At 17:55  again , but this we can hear a little bit louder.The little child is very chatty 😊

The child is talking at around 6:05 again.

And again  around  9:40 – 10:05.

And what is more interesting at around 10:30 – 10:35 we can hear a man’s voice asking sg and the child is responding. Cait is deep in her thoughts at this time and posing for some sec, so we can hear the background noise a little bit more.

All is not audible BUT the man voice is very familiar. I can recognise his voice even in a lowest sound.

Then all is gone. Maybe HE took the child to bed as this is bedtime for kids at 9:pm UK time.

JUST a NORMAL EVENING.

 FAMILY is at HOME. 

DAILY ROUTINE is ON.

THE HEUGHANs AT HOME.

TOGETHER.

And, by saying, “This is so cool.”, she really meant…

Let's talk about shame. Let's talk about what it is and what it is not. Specifically, "body shaming".

I know a little about being made to feel shame about my own body. In 1989, on vacation, my Dad (whom I love dearly) took his three kids to a Burger King. At the table, he said: "You know, Audra, I'd like to see your hips come in a little."

I was 16 and weighed 130 pounds. I didn't even have a tummy pooch. His words stung me. To this day, I have no idea why he said it, and the memory still sucks. I could barely eat for days.

I was ashamed.

My Grandma Henrietta knew something about shame. This is her and my Grandpa Cally (short for Calvin) at their wedding in 1936, which happened because they "had to get married". My Aunt Lynette was a teeny, tiny guest at the ceremony.

(I've included a before along with the official portrait, because these two really did adore each other... and you definitely can't tell from the official portrait!)

One night, Cally kept Henrietta out past her curfew driving around town on his super cool motorcycle with a sidecar, and she came home to a locked house. Her father was intractable. He would not let her in. She had nowhere to go on a cold night... so she spent the night at Cally's family's home. Teenagers being teenagers, things happened.

It gets worse: in order to even get to have a ceremony in their church, 17-year-old Henrietta had to confess her "sin" before a group of elders, all of whom were men born in the 1800's. (If you're wondering, no. Cally didn't have to make an appearance. It's been a man's world for a very long time, kids.)

So there she was, not yet 18, pregnant, and married. The embarrassment she felt from having premarital sex after being locked out of her house, coupled with having to discuss her "sin" with a bunch of old church perverts, and the strain of having to cobble together a quickie church wedding took its toll. As her pregnancy advanced, and she felt the baby move or kick, she would wrap her arms around her tummy to block it from view.

She was ashamed.

Those are two examples of real, actual body shaming: one creating insecurity where none previously existed, and one creating a small-town scandal with Grandma Henrietta as its protagonist. My Dad intended to shame me in order to improve myself in his eyes. The church elders intended to shame my Grandma into submission.

Both examples make me sick.

Hey.

You know what's *NOT* shameful?

Noticing when someone's pregnant.

Admitting to yourself that yes, you do indeed see a baby bump in a photo.

Here it is, from my baby shower in 1996 at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, where I worked at the time:

Hey, look. There's a baby bump in that photo. You see it. It's ok, you can look at my tummy. No one's going to revoke your feminist membership card. I'm 8 months pregnant in that photo, and everyone could see it... whether they came to my shower or not.

Because I have looked like that, I recognize this:

Noticing is not body shaming. I'm not calling her overweight, like my Dad did to me. I'm not telling her she's sinned, like the church elders did to my Grandma. I'm saying: I see a baby bump. If you're at all interested in being intellectually honest, you see it, too. Her hands are resting on it, much like one of mine did above. It's unwieldy, it's cumbersome, it's solid, and it makes a nice shelf. What the hell else are you supposed to do with your hands?

Why would you think that this is intentional shaming?

Because she wasn't publicly married then?

You must be a church elder from 1936.

Because you wish she hadn't been pregnant, and you'd like to pretend this didn't happen?

You must be a Starz/Sony executive.

Averting your eyes doesn't make you a feminist. It makes you willfully blind to a beautiful, happy woman in an advancing pregnancy that she obviously welcomed.

Maybe that's not feminist enough for you.

“What’s that?”, you say? All the parents will know! That, my friends, is a door knob cover. You know...the kind you use to keep CHILDREN from opening a door. Why does a “childless” woman have a door knob cover, on a door, in her home? Last I checked, Eddie didn’t have opposable thumbs.

That was a night I’ll never forget. Sam and Cait took my breath away, they were so gorgeous! There were many special moments between them, but the most telling one came as they were leaving the stage. Sam looked back at Cait several times and then waited to lead her off stage. None of the other cast members did that. That’s something you do when you’re in a relationship. 💕
