Franz Anton Mesmer, an 18th century Viennese physician with a flair for the theatrical, believed that an invisible magnetic fluid ran through every living body, and that disease was simply a blockage in its flow. He was eventually run out of Vienna under suspicion of fraud and relocated to Paris, where he treated patients in a dim, mirror-lined room, patients seated around a chemical vat, connected to each other by iron rods and held hands, while Mesmer himself drifted among them in a silk robe, pointing a wand. King Louis XVI eventually commissioned a royal investigation, and the resulting panel, which included both Benjamin Franklin and Antoine Lavoisier, concluded that the effects were produced entirely by the patients’ own imaginations. Mesmer died discredited, yet his ideas seeded hypnotherapy, the New Thought movement, and Christian Science. On the wilder fringes of the practice, one Victorian enthusiast reportedly mesmerized live lobsters in a fish market and calmly cut off their legs in front of a stunned crowd, while elsewhere practitioners magnetized furniture so patients could absorb its healing properties simply by sitting down.

What does get me though? The idea that for as smart as I can be, it did nothing to help me. I was clever enough to recognize that my mind was being messed with, but being clever didn't really help. That even though I was able to see and understand what was happening, I could do nothing to stop it from happening.
