          Damn. She had known it would be a fool’s errand to go to the infirmary by herself to get gauze and things to clean up the blood and stop the swelling. It would have been worse to bother Simon over something as simple as this and potentially get the entire crew involved in her business.

          It was just one person now. But that one person, unfortunately, never shut his gorram mouth.

           It wasn’t anything new for crew members on the Serenity to get themselves hurt, or beaten, or bloodied-up. Hell, it was pretty much normal. But Madalena was something different; she didn’t go on the same jobs as the rest of them; didn’t go to the same shady bars on backwater moons to drum up a fight or a job - or both.

             “Former client.” The words were repeated in a low tone, a growling mutter under his breath. “Where th’ hell this happen? On this planet, yeah, but where exactly?”

          Jayne’s low tone was menacing in a way Madalena wasn’t quite used to. He had been angry and annoyed before, sure, but there was something almost predatory in his barely restrained fury. The Companion paused, turning around slowly to face the brawler, a roll of bandages loosely held in her hand.

          “Mal wouldn’t like it if he needs to leave the planet and you’re off getting into another fight,” Madalena pointed out though there didn’t seem to be much concern in her voice. Because despite her comment...there was something kind of pleasing about the idea of getting to watch Jayne bash in the head of the client who had wronged her. He was probably gorram near beautiful in the midst of a fight...blood-stained, sweat soaked, tearing through enemies like a whirlwind...

          But the pleasing thoughts about Jayne in the heat of battle were undercut - as thoughts like this often were nowadays - by the onslaught of feelings Madalena had been slowly trying to sort through. “...Besides, what if he outnumbers you? He’s a wealthy man, Jayne. He has servants and others in his employee.”

          For a moment, Madalena merely blinked in surprise. Jayne Cobb was not a man to admit when things got under his skin, let alone women. They were a waste of time - a “can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without ‘em” sort of thing. So his admission was more than a little unnerving.

         Madalena couldn’t let herself indulge too much. She was a Companion. She wasn’t meant to be more than a brief thrill. A novelty. A one time experience.

         This was different and they BOTH knew it. But Madalena was going to ignore it as much as she could.

         Madalena managed a slight smile, a little more sad than she had intended. “You have so few admirers that I’m the one stressing you out?” she teased. “That’s a bit sad, Jayne.”

           Sure, he had drank a few sips of wine. And sure, he had hit his head in the fight with the feds yesterday. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t thinking clearly. Maybe a little less inhibited, sure, but nowhere near braindead or nothing like that. He meant what he said.

             She was the only gorram person - or woman - on this ship that was stressing him out this badly. He couldn’t put into words why, but ai yah tien ah, every time he saw her there was some mess of emotions he didn’t know how to deal with or even identify. It was frustrating.

          That was a fair enough point. They certainly weren’t the only crew of smugglers and criminals in the black, of course, but even birds of a feather seemed to flock far, far away from each other out here. 

          But before Madalena could counter - either with a genuine comment or something teasing - Jayne asked her a question that caused her to freeze. And, sadly enough, that was probably all the answer he needed. The surprised but soft gaze, the mouth open slightly but unable to form words...were her cheeks pink?

          Because while she did admire Jayne - in...multiple senses of the word - Madalena didn’t need him to know. Didn’t need to make the mess of emotions in her head verbal.
