The New Playmates
Jessica twirled to the music playing through the kitchen speakers as she moved towards the keypad. She loved the smart-house accessory, a keypad in each room to control, well, everything. Ā She raised the volume just a bit too loud, just the way she liked it. She spun again and her new sundress billowed and flowed around her. Ā She found it too cute and just had to have it even though summer was entering its twilight, which no one could believe considering the gorgeous weather lately. Sunshine and warmth, plenty to keep the windows and sliding doors open for fresh air. Ā
She bounced and skipped around the kitchen as she prepared a noon snack. Ā Grapes and berries, cheese and crackers, accompanied by a devilishly sweet red wine. Ā She poured herself a glass and indulged in a few sips as she munched. Ā Music and treats were a great way to pass the time waiting for her guest. Ā Gabby had sent a text not long ago saying she was en route, excited for their day by the pool. Ā She tossed a grape up and caught it in her mouth as a new song began, one of her favorites. Ā Her body could not resist and she had to dance. Ā
She pranced and played about the kitchen like a wood nymph, catching and chewing bits of fruit. Ā She even looked like a sprite, with her pixie hair and short, petite figure. Ā She tossed another grape, and just as she was about to catch it, a wicked smack broke through the booming music and startled her. Ā She would have gasped or screamed in fright had the grape not lodged in her throat. Ā

The door was unlocked and Gabby let herself in, carrying a day-bag with clothes and towels, and of course, a few bottles of wine. Ā Her bikini was already on, under her t-shirt and shorts, she would waste no time in diving in the warm pool water. Ā She had not had a day off in almost a year and nearly broke out in tears when she and Jess had found a day that worked for both of them. Ā
The music was disturbingly loud as she entered the front door of the house and caught a glimpse of Jess prancing about the kitchen sipping wine. Ā She grinned to herself and simply had to indulge in a little mischief. She placed her bag down as quietly as she could, not that anyone could hear anything over the riotous music, and crept down the hall to the kitchen. Ā She stopped and waited, and as Jess turned her back, Gabby jumped out and slammed both palms against the metal fridge door as hard as she could. Ā The sound was so forceful it even scared her and she burst out into laughter. Ā
āSurprise!ā She said through giggles, and went to the keypad to turn down the music. Ā Jess still had not replied. She turned to greet her friend.
Jessās hands were at her throat and her face was a vicious maroon.
āJess, whatās wrong?ā
Jess grasped at her throat. She tried to call out but could make no sound. Ā She lunged at Gabby and grabbed her hands. Ā She turned around and wrapped Gabbyās arms around her, desperate for her friendās help.
āWait, are you choking? Youāre choking!? Ā Oh god, ok, okā¦ā
Gabby held tight around Jessās waist and balled her fist against the blue fabric of the sundress. She pulled, in and up, but was afraid to pull too hard, she did not want to hurt her friend. Ā Jess grabbed frantically at Gabbyās hands and pushed them into herself as hard as she could. Ā Gabby pulled again, but it was hard to get any leverage with Jess squirming against her. Ā
āYou have to stop! Ā I canāt⦠I canāt do it if you keep moving! Just let me⦠let me do it!ā
Gabby gripped tighter and pulled as hard as she could, in and up. Ā She waited a moment, expecting something, anything to happen, but nothing changed. Ā Jess was still silent and gripped her arms, her nails digging into flesh. Ā It hurt, but as long as she was squeezing Gabby knew she was still alright. Ā
She pulled again, as hard as she could, she leaned her body back for as much leverage as possible. Jess rocked backward and off the ground. Gabby dropped her forward again and waited. Ā Still nothing. Ā Jessās head had lolled forward. Ā Her grip had loosened. Ā Her hands fell to her sides. Ā
āNo, no! Ā Come on! Ā Jess, come on!ā Ā
Gabby pulled as hard as she could again, but this time as she came forward all of Jessās dead weight carried them both and they fell. Ā Gabby slammed a knee hard against the kitchen floor sending a searing pain up her body. Ā She clenched her eyes and gritted her teeth in an attempt to find a place beyond the pain, a place to keep her mind focused on her friend. Ā
Her arms were still around Jess as she maneuvered into a squatting position, and tried to pull again as Jess slumped further. Ā She desperately tried shifting and moving and pulling in different ways, but nothing felt like it worked. Ā She began to cry, fear and frustration streamed from her face and she had to let go of her friend. Ā
As gently as she could, she lowered Jess down to the floor. Ā She cradled her head, and brushed the hair from her face. Ā Jessās eyes were frozen open in fear, and drool had leaked from her lips down her chin. Ā Gabby could no longer see through the tears. Ā
She pulled out her phone from her pocket and dialed 9-1-1. Ā

Chris and Brian found the front door still open. Ā They entered, dressed in blue utilities with EMT patches, carrying equipment bags. Ā
When they entered the kitchen, Gabby was vigorously pumping Jessās chest as instructed by the operator. They could see Jessās head bobbing to the side, her eyes gazing into nothingness, her lips an unnatural, sick blue.
āPlease, breathe! Please, Jess! Ā Take a breath, just one, please!ā
They placed their bags down, and got to work. Ā
Chris held Gabbyās shoulders and gently pulled her back from her friend. Ā
āWeāll take it from here, you did a great job.ā Ā He sat her back against the wall. Ā She held herself and sobbed as she watched them, praying. Ā
Brian had knelt behind Jessās head and had already attempted bagging, but no air was getting past the obstruction. Ā He scooped his arms underneath Jessās shoulders and lifted her up, and her head dangled forward. Ā He wrapped his arms around her and balled a fist. Ā He was bigger and stronger than Gabby, and was able to get a better hold.
He pulled hard three times, and made sure her head leaned forward. Ā Chris kept a close eye on her mouth as more saliva dripped out. Ā He shook his head, and Brian pulled again. This time a grape fell down into her lap. Ā Chris chucked it aside. Ā
āObstruction out, check the airway.ā Ā
Brian lowered her back onto the ground and grabbed an ambu bag. Ā He placed it over her mouth and squeezed. Ā Her chest rose. Ā Gabby screamed out through sobs, overwhelmed with relief, despite the battle still ahead.
āNo pulse, get her on the monitor.ā Ā
Brian continued to bag her, filling her lungs with fresh air, expanding her chest beneath the sundress. Chris pulled the Lifepak closer and unzipped a compartment. Ā He pulled out EKG leads and wires and set them aside. Ā He grabbed the front of Jessās dress with both hands and tore the fabric down to her groin, exposing her petite breasts and small nipples. Ā He placed leads on her chest and side, and snapped the wires into place. Ā He flicked the monitor on. Ā A flat green line began tracing across the screen. Ā
āSheās flat. Ā Start compressions.ā Ā
Brian dropped the ambu bag and knelt across from Chris on the other side of Jessās chest. Ā He placed both gloved hands between her nipples and began pressing hard and fast. Ā The monitor sprang to life.
Chris retrieved a hypo and flicked off the cap. Ā He found a vein in her arm, slid the needle in and slammed the plunger. Ā He tossed the syringe aside and grabbed the ambu bag. He squeezed while Brian finished the cycle of CPR. Ā
Jessās small chest caved in under the compressions as Brian pumped her motionless heart. Ā When he finished the cycle, he pulled his hands away, and Chris removed the bag from her mouth so they could check for a rhythm.
āNothing. Ā Continue compressions.ā Ā
Brian continued CPR, his latex hands back on her tiny chest. Ā Chris turned and looked at Gabby. Ā She searched his face for some sign of hope but saw none. Ā
āHow long was she down?ā
She sniffled, āI⦠I donāt know⦠maybe 10 minutes? Ā Not that long, it wasnāt too long, sheāll be ok, right?ā
āWeāre doing everything we can.ā Ā He turned back to the patient. Ā
āHold compressions.ā Ā
They waited and watched the monitor. Ā Still flat. Jessās eyes stared up at them. Her skin was as gray and pale as marble.
āAlright, letās shock a flat and then call it.ā Ā
Chris pulled the defibrillator paddles from their holsters and held them in one hand. Ā With the other hand he retrieved a bottle of electrolytic gel. Ā He flicked the cap and squeezed a few spurts onto each metal contact. Ā He tossed the bottle aside and rubbed the paddles together, coating each with the gel. Ā Brian tore Jessās sundress all the way down the middle, revealing a thin strip of pubic hair, and moved the fabric away from her body as much as he could. Ā
Chris pressed the paddles to her naked chest and rubbed the gel down. Ā With his thumb he charged to 300J. Ā
āCharging.ā
The charge screamed as it built. Ā
āClear.ā
Thunk!
Gabby screamed as Jessās tiny body jerked, and her limbs flopped. Ā Her head lolled lifelessly. Ā The line on the monitor launched off the screen and fell back into a flat line. Ā They waited.
āSheās still flat. Call it?ā Ā
āNO!ā Gabby screamed and lunged at them. Ā āPlease, no! Please!ā Ā
Chris dropped the paddles and grabbed her. Ā
āSheās young and healthy, man, she still has a chanceā¦ā Brian offered. Ā
Chris exhaled, āAlright, another round, but thatās it.ā Ā
Brian continued compressions as Chris moved Gabby to the side.
āStay there, let us work, alright?ā
She nodded anxiously, and knelt beside Jessās legs as they worked. Ā She rubbed her friendās feet, thinking she could help, somehow, that Jess would know she was still there, she was not alone. Ā
Chris injected another syringe into his patientās arm and went back to bagging as Brian pumped her chest. His forehead was beading with sweat from the effort and he started to breath a little heavier. Ā
āHold compressions.ā Ā
All eyes were on the monitor.
āHoly fuck.ā
āTold you.ā
Tiny squiggles filled the screen as Jessās heart began fibrillating. Ā
āYes, you did. Alright, letās hit her again. 400J.ā
Chris grabbed the paddles and charged to shock. Ā The charge built as Gabby held tight to Jessās legs and prayed. Ā All three of them still watched the monitor as Chris replaced the paddles on Jessās bare chest. Ā
āClear.ā Ā No one looked away from the monitor.
Chris fired the shock.
Thunk!
The electricity surged through Jessās body, contracting every muscle, jolting her small figure again, traveling all the way down her legs and into Gabby. Ā Her heart stopped instantly. Ā
She collapsed to the kitchen floor with a little thud. Ā Chris and Brian looked back.
āDid you check if she was clear?!ā Brian yelled at Chris. Ā
āNo, I was busy shocking this one, did you check if she was clear?!ā
āNo⦠Fuck!ā Ā
Chris dropped the paddles and hurried to Gabbyās body. Ā He rolled her over and checked her vitals. Ā She was not breathing, and he felt no pulse. Ā
āNothing.ā
Brian checked the monitor, Jess was still in v-fib. Ā He started compressions again. Ā
āYou work on her, Iāll keep going on this one.ā Ā
Chris scooped under Gabbyās arms and pulled her closer to the Lifepak. Ā He pulled the EKG cable out and the monitor went flat again. Ā He grabbed the paddles to check his new patient for a rhythm.
āShit.ā
He dropped the paddles, realizing she was still clothed. Ā He grabbed a pair of sheers from the equipment bag and cut a straight line down the front of Gabbyās t-shirt, and tossed the fabric aside. Ā He yanked the knots at the top and center of her bikini top and pulled the little swimsuit off her body, leaving her plump figure bare. Ā He grabbed the paddles again and rubbed them onto her chest. Ā The monitor showed a course v-fib. Ā
āAlright, first time, come on, make it easy for me.ā
He flicked the wheel and charged the paddles to 200J. Ā
Thunk!
Brian watched her curvy body seize from the shock as he continued pumping Jessās chest. Ā
āAnything?ā Ā
āNo. Ā Come on, kiddo, come back to us.ā
Chris charged the paddles again and fired.
Thunk!
The line flew off the screen and traced back into a flatline before squiggling again. Ā
āGive her some drugs and let me check this one,ā Brian said. Ā
Chris dropped the paddles and pulled out another syringe. Ā As he injected Gabby, Brian yanked the EKG pads off Jessās chest and applied the defib paddles. Ā The monitor showed she was still in v-fib. Ā
He reached over her for the bottle of gel and squirted a few more drops. Ā He rubbed the metal contacts onto her skin and charged. Ā
āCome on, sweetheart, you can do it.ā Ā
Thunk!
The monitor jumped and began spiking, nice even spikes and Brian nearly pumped a fist into the air after he tossed the paddles aside. Ā
āSinus rhythm, holy shit. Checking for a pulse.ā Ā He pressed two fingers into her groin. Ā āNice strong pulse, alright, this one is back.ā Ā Brian grabbed the ambu bag and squeezed big breaths into Jessās lungs. Ā He pressed his fingers on her neck to monitor her pulse. Ā
Chris reached for the paddles and applied them to Gabbyās chest. Ā The monitor showed v-fib.
āAlright, your friend is back, sheās going to be pissed if you leave her like this, one more timeā¦ā
He charged the paddles and fired.
Gabby jolted and immediately sprang back to life clutching her chest and coughing. Ā
āThank fucking christā¦ā Chris sighed in relief. Ā
āRelax, youāre ok, look at me.ā
Chris gave her a good once-over exam to make sure she was ok, and gestured for Gabby to turn around. She could see Jess waking up as Brian rubbed a fist against her chest, rousing her from unconsciousness. Ā
āYouāre both going to be just fine.ā
Gabby threw her arms around Chris, and kissed his cheek.
***
āAnd, cut!ā Ā Brian called out as he tossed the ambu bag aside. āNot bad for your first time. Ā So, what did you think?ā Ā He asked the girls.
Gabby and Jess both got up and pulled a few baby-wipes out of one of the equipment bags. Ā They began rubbing off the gel from their chests. Jess dropped the ragged sundress from her shoulders, and Gabby did the same with her ruined t-shirt. Ā
āThat was fun! Ā But, if weāre all acting, who was filming?ā Ā
Brian pointed to various spots around the kitchen. Ā āI had cameras installed, that way we donāt have to worry about filming or having crews. We can just have fun, and edit the footage later.ā
āAnd you guys make a lot of money doing this?ā
Chris and Brian shared a grinned. Ā
āWe do alright, thereās a growing audience for the material. Ā If you want, we can do another one after we take a break.ā Ā
The girls exchanged a look, and nodded. Ā Not a bad gig. Ā The guys were fun to work with, and seemed like they would be fun to hang out with as well. Ā
āGreat, letās grab a snack and maybe take a dip in the pool, and we can come up with another scene.ā
They left the gear on the floor, grabbed the plates of food and bottles of wine, and headed out into the sunshine. Ā
