How do I find research opportunities?
You ask. You ask everyone.ย
Email the secretary of the department youโre interested in and ask her if there is a summer research program for students. Youโll get put on a mailing list. Maybe youโll find out about a meeting scheduled for the next week that you didnโt even know about.
I met the president of the ENT student interest group. Asked her if she knew anyone doing laryngology research. I immediately got a name and an email address for a 3rd year resident doing research. Sent the email asking if she was working on anything. Accepted to the project. Cake.
Met a fellow when I was shadowing. Updated her on my Step 1 score and she immediately started giving me tips and followed it up with the name of a doctor here at my institution in pediatric ENT that she did residency with. Told me to look her up and ask her about research. Just sent out that email.
If youโve really got guts, email the head of the residency program at your school. Tell them you know research is important for matching. Theyโll hook you up with residents and you can churn out case reports for them.ย
So many times you guys ask meย โHow do I get involved in XYZ?โ
The answer is that you just go for it. You talk to people. You insert yourself where you need to be. No one is ever going to get mad at you just for asking. The head of our residency program actually complimented me on going out of my way to find extra research to do. Seriously.
If you want an opportunity, just ask for it.
Coucou! Comment je peux amรฉliorer ma expression รฉcrite? Merci!
Hello,
Careful : use Mon when the noun starts with a vowel. Here are a few ideas :
Make sure you master the basics.
Select a few French novels, find a summary (from the back cover or Google) and write it down. Syntax isnโt a lottery : this is a great way to identify how sentences are made and how many elements there are.
Read read read. As much as possible (I would recommend you stick with the books youโve already read in your first language at first) : classic works, the news, websites/social mediaโฆย
Download Lingolden for Google Chrome and use Reverso a lot.
Write book or movies summaries, letters, lists, anything (you can always ask me to take a look at your work).ย
In other words, practice is key! xย

Whatโs the difference??โMaking choices in Korean
Hello, everyone! Back again with anotherย โWhatโs the difference??โ post. This time weโre going to look at choice words in Korean. This post is actually inspired by a question someone asked on Reddit about the difference between seven (seven!) decision/choice words. I answered the question very briefly, but now Iโd like to look at the words in more detail. ๊ฒฐ์ ํ๋ค, ์ ํ๋ค, ๋ง์๋จน๋ค, ๊ฒฐ์ฌํ๋ค, ๊ณ ๋ฅด๋ค, ์ ํํ๋ค, and ์ทจํ๋คโฆ whatโs the difference? Letโs find out!
๊ฒฐ์ ํ๋ค (ๆฑบๅฎ)
We can consider ๊ฒฐ์ ํ๋ค as a pretty standard word forย โdecide.โ You can use this when you make pretty much any sort of decision.
๋ด๋ ์ ์ผ๋ณธ ์ฌํ ๊ฐ๊ธฐ๋ก ๊ฒฐ์ ํ์ด์. (I decided to travel to Japan next year.)
๋ํ๊ต ๊ฐ์ ๋ญ ๊ณต๋ถํ ์ง ๊ฒฐ์ ํ์ด์? (Have you decided what youโll study at university?)
์ ํ๋คย (ๅฎ)
์ ํ๋ค is not so much asย โdecideโ as it is toย โsetโ something, like guidelines, rules, a meeting time, or something like that.ย
๋๋ฃ๋คํ๊ณ ์๋ ผํด์ ์ฐ์ ๋ ์ง๋ฅผ ๋ค์ ์ฃผ ๊ธ์์ผ๋ก ์ ํ์ด์. (After consulting with my coworkers, we set the training date for next Friday.)
์ ํด์ง ์๊ฐ์ ๋ง๋์ ๊ฐ์ด ์ถ๋ฐํฉ์๋ค. (Letโs meet at the decided time and depart together.)
๋ง์๋จน๋ค
๋ง์์ ๋จน๋ค is a phrasal verb that is used to express making up oneโs mind about something. There is a nuance of difficulty here, like the decision was not made lightly, or perhaps that you were hesitant or nervous beforehand and just decided to go for it.
ํํ ์จ๋ ๋ง์๋จน๊ณ ํ๊ตญ์ ์ด์ฌ๊ฐ๊ธฐ๋ก ํ์ด์. (Taehyung made up his mind and decided to move to Thailand.)
๋ง์์ ๊ฑธ๋ฆฌ๋ ํ ์ผ์ด ์์ผ๋ฉด ๊ณ์ ๋๋ ์๋๋ ์ฐจ๋ผ๋ฆฌย ๋ง์ ๋จน๊ณ ํด๋ฒ๋ฆฌ๋ ๊ฒ ๋ซ๋ค. (If there is something that you have to do weighing on your mind, it is better to just make a decision and do it than complain about it.)
๊ฒฐ์ฌํ๋ค (ๆฑบๅฟ)
๊ฒฐ์ฌํ๋ค is similar to ๊ฒฐ์ ํ๋ค but has a stronger sense of conviction about it. Itโs also similar to ๋ง์๋จน๋ค, but with less hesitation and more firmness. We could translate it in English as โto resolve, to determine.โ
์์ด๊ฐ ํ์ด๋ฌ์ ๋ ์ ์ฐฌ ์จ๋ ๊ฐ์กฑ์ ์ํด ๊ธ์ฐ์ ๊ฒฐ์ฌํ๊ณ ์ด์ ๋ด๋ฐฐ๋ฅผ ์ ํผ์ด ์ง ๊ฑฐ์ 5๋ ์ด ๋์ด์. (When his child was born, Yoochan resolved to quit smoking, and now itโs been almost five years since he last smoked.)ย
๋๋ฌด ์ค๋ซ๋์ ๋ง์์ ์ ๋๋ ์ผ์ ํ๋ ํจ์ ์จ๋ ๋ ์ข์ ์ง์์ ์ฐพ๊ธฐ๋ก ๊ฒฐ์ฌํ๋ค. (Hyojung, who had been doing work she hated for too long, set herself to finding a better job.)
๊ณ ๋ฅด๋ค
๊ณ ๋ฅด๋ค meansย โto chooseโ orย โto select.โ You can use it when you pick something.
๋๋ ์๋ฌด๊ฑฐ๋ ์ข์์ ๋ค๊ฐ ๊ณจ๋ผ. (Anything is fine with me, so you choose.)
์ค๋ ์ค์ํ ๋ฉด์ ์ ๋ด์ผ ๋ผ์ ์ท์ฅ์์ ๊ฐ์ฅ ์์ ์ํผ์ค๋ฅผ ๊ณจ๋ผ ์ ์์ด์. (I have an important interview today so I chose the prettiest dress in my closet to wear.)
์ ํํ๋ค (้ธๆ)
์ ํํ๋ค is very similar to ๊ณ ๋ฅด๋ค, with the small difference that it sounds a bit moreโฆ academic? formal? Iโm not saying itโs a particularly formal word, but it is approximately the Hanja equivalent of ๊ณ ๋ฅด๋ค. Itโs pretty normal for Hanja equivalents to sound a bit ~fancier~ than their native Korean counterparts.
์ต์ ๋ค ์ค์์ ํ๋๋ฅผ ์ ํํ์ธ์. (Please select one of these options.)
๋์ ์๋ผ๋ ค๊ณ ๋ ์ ๋ ดํ ๊ฑธ ์๋๋ฐ ์ฌ์ฉํด ๋ณด๋๊น ์๋ชป ์ ํํ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. (I bought the cheaper one to save money, but having tried it out I think I chose wrong.)
์ทจํ๋ค (ๅ)
Lastly, we have ์ทจํ๋ค! This word means to choose in the sense of taking up or enacting something. For example, you can use this verb when you talk about enacting a policy, taking up a particular stance on something, and so on.
๋ค์ค๋์น๋ค์ ๋ฐฑ์ธ ์ฐ์์ฃผ์ ์์ธ๋ฅผ ์ทจํ๋ค. (Neo-Nazis take a position of white supremacy.)
์งํ๊ด๋ฆฌ๋ณธ๋ถ ๋ฐ์ด๋ฌ์ค์ ํ์ฐ์ ๋ง๊ธฐ ์ํด ๊ธํ ์กฐ์น๋ฅผย ์ทจํ๋ค. (The Center for Disease Control took emergency measures to stop the spread of the virus.)
With practice, you can make the right choice (haha) between these verbs every time!
Happy studying~

Hello. This is the Korean Grammar Doctor.
์๋ ํ์ธ์. ํ๊ตญ์ด ๋ฌธ๋ฒ ์์ฌ์ ๋๋ค.
.
.
I have met some people from English speaking countries who introduced themselves at the meetup, saying โI am sorry. My Korean is so bad. ๋ฏธ์ํด์. ํ๊ตญ์ด ์ ๋ชปํด์.โ I have also met some Koreans who said this. โI am sorry. My English is bad.โ
.
.
It seem Ok, but I think that it is not a professional way to ask for otherโs favor or understanding and it is hard to give a confident and memorable impression in the first place.
.
As I mentioned in one of my former posts, you donโt have to say sorry that much in Korea. If you do something wrong, you can simply say ์ฃ์กํฉ๋๋ค.โ and go on. You donโt have to say sorry for your mistakes unless your mistakes harm or bring bad things to someone. Saying sorry for every trivialities might give most Korean people this kind of impression that you just want to evade unfavorable and disadvantageous situations without sincerity.

If you want to ask someoneโs consideration for your lack of Korean proficiency in more polite and professional way, I suggest saying โ์ํด๋ฅผ ๋ถํ๋๋ฆฝ๋๋ค.(=๋ถํ๋๋ ค์) / ์ดํดํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. / ์ํด ์ข ํด ์ฃผ์ธ์ / ์ดํด ์ข ํด ์ฃผ์ธ์.โ

- ๋ค๋ฅธ ์ฌ๋์ ์ฌ์ ์ด๋ ์๋ชป์ ์ดํดํ๊ณ ๋๊ทธ๋ฝ๊ฒ ๋ฐ์๋ค์.
- An act of understanding othersโ situation or fault, and taking it broad-mindedly.
.

For example, you can say like
- ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ์ ๋ชปํด์. ์ํด๋ฅผ ๋ถํ๋๋ฆฝ๋๋ค.
(Literal) My Korean is not that good. Iโd like to ask for your consideration

The spacing is important
My Korea learner friends asked me โWhy is ๋์ด์ฐ๊ธฐ spacing important? It is just so annoying.โ . Then, I showed this picture to them. They became silent my point and started learning ๋์ด์ฐ๊ธฐ. . . [Discussion / Tips for Korean learner] Korean phrases to say to break up with your partner properly
Hello everyone, This is the Korean Grammar Doctor. ์๋ ํ์ธ์ ์ฌ๋ฌ๋ถ. ํ๊ตญ์ด ๋ฌธ๋ฒ ์์ฌ์ ๋๋ค. . . One day, I read a post about a breakup of an international couple. It made me wonder what Korean phrases they used to end their relationship. So, I looked up some farewell phrases on the internet to strength my imagination of how they broke up by speaking Korean. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpTQEGucodE ์ด์ ํค์ด์ ธ์. Letโs go our separate ways . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyxMYD0n19w ๋๋ ์ผ์ ์ง์คํด์ผ ํด I need to focus on my career . ๋ฐ์ดํธํ ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ด I donโt have any time to date . ๋ ๊ทธ๋ฅ ์ด๋ฐ ์ข ๋ฅ์ ์ฐ์ ๋ฅผ ์ํ ์ค๋น๊ฐ ์ ๋์ด I am just not ready for this kind of relationship . ๋ด ์๊ฐ์ด / ๊ณต๊ฐ์ด ํ์ํด I need my time / space . ๋ด ์ฌ์ํ์ด ํ์ํด I need my privacy . ๋๋ ๋ด๊ฒ ๊ณผ๋ถํ ์ฌ๋์ด์ผ. You deserve better . ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ๊ทธ๋ฅ ์น๊ตฌํ์. Letโs just be friends. . ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ์ง๋๊ฐ ๋๋ฌด ๋น ๋ฅธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์. You will be able to meet someone better than me. . ์ด๊ฒ ์ต์ ์ด์ผ It is for the best. . ๋ ๊ทธ๋ฅ ๋๋ฅผ ๋ ์ด์ ์ฌ๋ํ์ง ์์. I just donโt love you anymore. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_eVNBjXIoM ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ๊ทธ๋ง ๋ง๋์. Letโs stop seeing each other . The first impression that I got after I watched these three video clips was like โWellโฆ..I donโt think that most of the phrases here are familiar.โ I am not saying that they are wrong or teaching incorrect Korean phrases. It is just my opinion. Maybe because I barely spoke and used very refined language not to hurt my partner when I broke up. Anyway, I am going to introduce phrases that I used when I broke up. . . [Note] All phrases are written in ๋ฐ๋ง because it is more common in a romantic relationship. Most phrases are written in the conversational tense. There are some quotes from romantic K-dramas. I guess that there are some people who dislike K-drama lines, but they are really useful to break up properly. . . #Scenario The farewell process begins : ๊ฐ and ๊ณ are in a relationship. [Tips for Korean learners] How to avoid uncomfortable / too personal questions professionally and politely.
Hello. This is the Korean Grammar Doctor. ์๋ ํ์ธ์. ํ๊ตญ์ด ๋ฌธ๋ฒ ์์ฌ์ ๋๋ค.ย
Several days ago, I came across a complaint post on Hellotalk, about Koreans who asked her too personal and uncomfortable questions in the first meeting, like dating relationship, marital status, salary, whether or not she lived alone in Korea or such. Also, most Koreans have received these kinds of questions from unfriendly relatives every ์ค๋ and ์ถ์. I am sick of them.
I would like to introduce some tips how to avoid these kinds of questions, and on the other hand, inform you that this method doesnโt always work out because Korea is a hierarchy society where elder people mostly have initiatives to answer questions in almost every relationship. If you have conversations with elder people who enjoy playing its hierarchy, it wouldnโt able to work out well.

As Soon As in Korean
-์๋ง์ meansย โas soon as ___โ
Conjugation:
First remove ๋ค from the verb, then addย -์๋ง์ to the verb stem.ย
For example, when using ๋ณด๋ค first removeย ๋ค leaving you withย ๋ณด (the verb stem.) Now you can addย -์๋ง์ toย ๋ณด making ๋ณด์๋ง์.
Examples:
์ง์ ์ค์๋ง์ ์ ๋ค์์ด์ - I fell asleep as soon as I came home
๋์ฐฉํ์๋ง์ ์ ํํ ๊ฒ์ - As soon as I arrive, I will call you
๋ณด์๋ง์ ๋ง์์ ๋ค์์ด์ - As soon as I saw it, I liked it
