they were promised nothing. it came with the way life was anymore. before all of this people could get closer to being promised the safety and security of their lives and now there was really no such thing but the illusion of it until the illusion shifted and changed, lifted. yumiko was right. for now they were safe here. yes, magna thought about figuring out all of the options available to them just to figure out what might be best. some of them might choose one thing and some of them might choose another. she liked to think she would look to yumiko to learn what she thought before she made any singular choice on her own.Â
the others didnât owe her anything, but magna was closer to yumiko and in a different way and she wanted to know what she was thinking. she wanted to be alone with her to talk about those things. to even just exist with her. her girlfriend still needed a lot of rest. magna wouldnât risk further injury to her, but she would trust her words when yumiko let her know how she was feeling, every time. her hand squeezed her girlfriendâs back and she allowed her thumb to run over her knuckles as they walked to the housing theyâd been assigned to. there were multiple rooms, but for now she just aimed for the house and opened the screen door to the empty living room, happy to see that empty at least. âyou said you havenât eaten.â the screen door she held until yumiko was safe inside.Â
yumiko thought often about the world as it was before. the way the world operated before. she thought about who she was. her own confidence and pride. how differently she acted or dressed. she thought about the way she ate, the thought she gave to food. she thought about all the things she never wouldâve thought about before. all the things she took for granted. all the times she complained about having to wait twenty minutes in a line. all the times the prices of gas rose and fell. she complained about taxes and traffic and the heat. nowadays, things were so completely different. yumiko could go days without eating real food. she could go far longer without sleeping. she could sleep without ever truly giving over her mind.
things were different now. dark eyes were fixed on her girlfriend as she thought. she wondered what theyâd have fought about before the apocalypse if they were dating then. where to go for dinner, who would drive, whoâs house they would sleep at. nowadays, their discussions were frequently life or death. their decisions were important and could change their entire reality. their choices could lose them a friend or family member. nowadays, she looked at magna and even when she was angry or hungry or tired, she couldnât bring herself to ever be mad at this woman. every moment they had was rare and lucky. every moment was, truly, a blessing. âhavenât.â she eyed her girlfriend, âbut iâm pretty used to that, iâm okay.â
