          Among other things, there is no weather on a Starship. But damn if Leonard doesn’t dream of storms. 

          Asleep in the unnatural quiet of his rooms, the doctor watches lightening fork across the darkness behind his eyes. The air tastes of ozone, laden with that heavy summer warmth, the kind he remembers from Georgia in late June, when the sky would split apart as easily as a peach on the limb. 

          Storms like that, they make the world (any world) seem small; turns an early evening into something slow and thrilling all at once. Like a deep inhale on a racing heart. The Sky growls and the Earth trembles and between them breeds a cacophonous symphony of light and sensation the likes of which Len cannot forget.

          McCoy had walked in those Georgia storms many times. Once, because he’d been in love. And then again when he was heartbroken, and there was nowhere else to go that was any kinder than the rain. The flat taste of water on Leonard’s tongue, the slick give of Georgia clay beneath his boots, the crackle-pop of that lightening zigzagging overhead; it all remains familiar as the very bones he’d taken with him when he’d left. 

“Quantum entanglement triggers on our fission warheads, doctor. You said you wanted something safer for the landing party?”

         Perhaps it comes as no great surprise that both Leonard’s Med Bay and his personal office workspace are meticulously, unfailingly organized, even during the most stressful of times. The man himself maintains a certain standard with hygiene, a habit learned during his residency that has extended to all parts of his life out of sheer practicality. It’s a solid excuse, anyway, and a good way to avoid addressing his phobias for nearly every known (and all unknown) diseases in the galaxy. 

        Pending no major disasters and the necessity of field medicine, McCoy’s Med Bay is spotless. Medical equipment and supplies are well-maintained and organized to the degree that the staff need not “look” for something, they can reach for it blindly. Efficiency, when saving lives, is key.  

         In his personal quarters, Len is a touch less rigid these days. Maybe the time spent living in close proximity to Jim (who he swears still doesn’t know what a laundry hamper is) has left an impression. Or maybe Leonard has finally let himself relax again, finally given himself permission to stop living his life like a man who has nothing left but his Bones.
