summary: When Dean and Sam had their fight over Samâs future, y/n chose Samâs side and left for college with Sam. After John Winchester goes missing, Dean needs his brother and his best friend back. But Sam doesnât know the full story of their fight. Maybe a run-in with Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, might just show both of the brothers how much Dean hurt y/n.
As soon as they stepped onto the small front patio, Dean forgot how he was planning on breaking the news to y/n. She had never particularly liked John Winchester (understatement, she hated him), but he kinda raised her, too. She wasnât going to love the thought of him being missing.
âDean? Are you ok? What's going on?â
âDadâs missing.â Dean figured heâd get straight to the point.
âWhat? Johnâs probably just-â
âHe went on a solo hunting trip a few weeks back and I havenât heard from him since then.â
Y/nâs face fell a little when he mentioned hunting. Hunting is probably the most dangerous âoccupationâ in the world, and everyone Dean cares about is involved with it in one way or another. That's why he hated coming there. Thatâs why he hated standing there right then. That is why a part of him wanted to tuck tail and deal with it on his own. But no matter how much he hated it, he had barely survived the last year without seeing y/nâs face everyday. There was no way he could survive whatever came next without her.
So he wanted to tell her everything. About how he felt about that last hour that they spent in the same room together. How he missed her everyday. He missed her like air, like breathing. Naturally. How he couldnât see a Cherry Coke bottle without his heart skipping a beat. How he was sorry. How much he needed her forgiveness.
But, you know, none of that chick flick shit. So the next word that followed her shocked silence was:
âBut I still donât understand, why did you need to come here?â Y/nâs face is scrunched in confusion, but Dean could tell she just wanted him to say it out loud.
Fine, Dean had the balls to say it.
âI need your help. If something ganked the great John Winchester, then I canât face it by myself.â
She crossed her arms and lifted one eyebrow expectantly. âAndâŚâ
Dean sighed.
âAndâŚI missed you.â The smile on her face was worth Deanâs embarrassment. âSo, will you hunt with me again?â
Y/n looked away, obviously remembering everything he said to her that last night. Guilt washed over Dean.
âLook. Iâm sorry about what I said, you know. I didnât-â
âDean. Itâs fine.â Dean knew it wasnât. âI've forgotten all about it. All is forgiven. Besides, you didnât come all this way just to apologize. Letâs hit the road.â
âIâll make it up to you. Iâll buy you a cherry coke!â Dean said, wiggling his eyebrows. Y/n broke into laughter at that expression. She was bent over giggling, stumbling and leaning against the house. Dean had forgotten how cute it was when she did that.
âDonât even pretend like you earned that money. Credit card fraud pays more than this shitty gig.â
âDean! Wake up!â Sam's voice breaks through the barrier of Deanâs dream. Dean opens his eyes and lifts his head off the table abruptly. There are endless Greek Mythology books open all over the motel room. Y/n is pouring over one while laying upside down on Deanâs bed.
âI still don't understand why this canât be some murderous Aphrodite worshiper,â Dean says through a yawn. Last night the three hunters started to believe that their current case was due to the work of the Greek Goddess of Love. The morning has proved Dean more skeptical.
âBecause, Dean, the kidnapping conditions are impossible for a human being to accomplish. Locked doors, awake roommates, no signs of break in or break out.â
âOh yeah.â Dean pauses and looks at y/n sprawled across his sheets.
âI need some coffee. Wanna go get some, y/n?â
âSure.â She shuts her book with a loud clap. Sam looks at the two of them like they are insane.
âYou two seem to be forgetting that we have been researching this thing all night and we don't have anything to show for it. Nobody seems to know how to kill a Greek god. We need to keep looking. This thing always takes a new girl five days after the last one has been dumped. That means someone will go missing tonight and we need to stop it.â
âMaybe weâre not finding anything because weâre tired and we need some coffee,â y/n says, giggling. âSome field work could help, too.â
âFine. But weâre coming back here afterwards and working until we know how to kill her. Weâre on the clock.â Sam grabs his boy-purse (the book bag that Dean nicknamed) with his laptop and heads out to the car with Dean and y/n.
âLots of big talk cominâ from the youngest person in this group,â Y/n murmurs to Dean as they walk around the car. Dean chuckles.
âHe canât make me do anything if Iâm the one driving the car,â Dean murmurs back.
Y/n is still giggling when she closes the car door behind her and Dean is watching her in the rearview and smiling.
âWhatâd I miss?â Sam asks, smiling.
âOh, nothing. Itâs just that Deanâs gonna drive us all the way back to that diner in Louisiana if you donât quit beinâ so bossy.â
âThe one with the fantastic apple pie? Oh, Iâd do anything for some of that right now," Dean says while he puts the car in reverse and backs out of the parking spot.
âThat place was disgusting! I think I saw a rat run out of the kitchen with my own two eyes!â
âDonât spread lies about Melodyâs like that! Their classic Key Lime pie is my desert island meal,â Y/n says, barely controlling the threatening wave of laughter at Samâs astonished face.
Dean turns the music up one thousand notches and begins to sing loudly and obnoxiously as Sam tries to argue his case about the diner. This makes y/n laugh even harder.
Dean has missed their father since he left. Obviously. He was a great hunter and itâs worrying Dean that heâs missing. But, on the other hand, hunting without him has its benefits. Sam, Dean, and y/n are their own little silly family. With no hovering hand of seriousness and control over Dean, he feels more free. Dean would never admit that to anyone else, though. He needs to make sure the bond between Sam and John can eventually be repaired. He canât start trash-talking about his dad to his brother while heâs not around. Y/nâs presence always makes him feel more free, too. Joking around is easier when he gets rewarded with her adorable loss of bodily function.
Dean lets the car keep running when they park at the local coffee shop, much to a trapped Samâs dismay. Him and y/n sing the last lyrics of the rock song and then get out of the car.
They have been sitting fruitlessly at the coffee shop for half an hour when y/n decides to pitch in her two cents.
âI donât think a goddess can even be killed at all.â
This does not receive an overwhelmingly positive response.
âTheyâre literally immortal. You canât kill them. I just think you have to convince the goddess to stop whatever sheâs doing.â Y/n is once again met with a disapproving silence.
âLet me get this right. You want us to convince a murderous goddess to just⌠stopâŚkilling people?â Sam says incredulously.
âWell, yeah. If it turns out we canât kill her, weâll have to.â
âThatâs ridiculous. Everything can be killed,â Dean says, shoving a chocolate bagel into his mouth.
âWhatever you say, then.â
Shortly, they decide to return to the motel room for more inspiration. Once again, the three hunters find basically nothing. Sam finds something about âcelestial bronzeâ but they didn't have any idea of how to get some of that so they were back to square one.
âDude, my ass is starting to go numb from sitting on it all day. Canât we go talk to some more of the victim's friends? Anything to get off of the disgusting couch,â Dean complains.
âHow âbout you and Sam go talk to Benjaminâs friends? Maybe he told them something after Terri went missing. I have an idea to try with this research.â
âFine. But Dean has to promise not to flirt with anymore grieving college girls. Itâs just wrong,â Sam said, his eyes following Dean as he leans down to pick up the boy-purse.
âNo promises!â Dean slams the door. Y/n and Sam share a tight-lipped smile as he follows Dean out the door.
Sam shuts the car door and immediately turns to Dean. âWhat is going on with you and y/n?â
Dean starts the car and twists around to watch as he backs out. âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âYou two have been a little weird since we came back to hunting. Did something happen?â
Dean considers telling Sam about their fight for a few seconds. But he knows Sam will want Dean to talk about it with y/n. Dean would like to just move on as fast as possible, and the best way he knows how is just to bury it and ignore it until it goes away.
âNo. Me and y/n are fine. So, which friend should we visit first?â
They almost make their way through Benjaminâs entire friend group before sunset. They left the best friend, Janet Hickey, for last. They were told that they would find her working her shift at the arcade. They find her on her break.
âHey, are you Janet?â Sam asks, approaching her as she smokes a cigarette behind the arcade. Janey turns sharply. Her eyes look red and puffy, like sheâs been crying.
âYeah, whoâs asking?â
âWeâre with the FBI. We want to know a little bit about how Ben was acting before he disappeared.
âI already went over everything-!â Janet starts.
âWe know, we justâŚhave some more questions. Did Ben act weird before he disappeared?â
âYeah, a little. I don't know.â She took a last breath through the cigarette before throwing it to the ground and stomping on it. âHis ex-girlfriend had just gone missing, who can blame him?â
Sam looks at Dean and finds him also confused. âWait, I thought they hadnât broken up yet?â Sam asks.
âSorry, force of habit.â She takes a deep breath. âBen lied to me and told me they had broken up like, 5 months ago,â
âWe were dating, too. He was cheating on her with me,â Janet says, emotion tainting her voice and threatening to overflow into tears. âAnd he didnât even have the decency to tell me when he was alive! I had to find out through his paragraph in the newspaper!â Janet covers her face and begins to shake.
âWeâre so sorry about that and about your loss,â Dean says, slowly and awkwardly.
Janet tries to say something else but it comes out muffled through her hands.
âWeâre going to leave you alone now. Thank you for your help,â Sam says, hurrying back to the car with Dean behind him.
Dean and Sam turn around and see Janet jogging to catch up. âI didnât see Ben much right before he was taken, but if he was acting strange then his dealer wouldâve known. His name is Gabe, hereâs his address.â
Janet hands Sam the slip of paper and returns to the arcade.
âYet another wild goose chase.â Dean slams the door and wipes a hand down his face.
âLetâs try this guy. Maybe heâll tell us something we can use to find the next victim before tonight.â
Gabe doesnât look like heâd be much help.
His yard is littered with old junk: torn furniture, broken refrigerators, and heaps of trash. Gabe is sitting on a rocking chair near the house and smoking something. Heâs a short white guy with dreads, which Iâm sure gives some note of his character. He raises an arm to block the headlights when Dean and Sam pull in the driveway.
âHello Gabe. Weâre with the FBI and weâre gonna ask you a few questions,â Sam says when he walks up, flashing the fake badge.
âWoah, shit! Look man, I donât know nothinâ! I havenât done anything-â Gabe jumps out of the chair and tries to hide the lines of coke on the left arm rest.
âWe donât care about the drugs," Dean says. Gabe pauses and sits back down.
âWeâre here about the killing of Benjamin, one of your-â
âMan, I didnât do anything to Ben!â Gabe stands up again, ready to defend himself.
âWe know." Gabe slowly lowers himself back into the chair. "How was he acting before he was taken?â
âOh, shit. Benny was fucked up! Sorry, uh, sir. Benny was pretty messed up the night he disappeared.â
âDude was straight up tweakinâ. He rushed in here all like, âSOME HOT CHICK IS TRYINâ TO KILL ME.â Then he begged me for some shit to deal with but he wanted it on the house âcus he left his cash at home. But Gabe donât do no favors so I was all like-â
âGabe, focus. Was he being chased?â
âThatâs what he said. I didnât tell no coppers âcus they wouldâve locked me up for the drugs.â Gabe pauses, as if remembering that he is talking to members of the FBI. âBut yâall seem cool.â
Dean almost laughs at that. Maybe they arenât good enough fake feds. âThanks, I guess. Did he say anything else about what was after him or what it wanted?â
âNah. But I guess it got him, whatever it was,â Gabe says.
On the way back to the motel, Sam and Dean talk about what this means for the case. If Aphrodite is taunting these men, then whoever she is taking next might already be feeling the effects. They are so distracted by the new information that they forget that theyâve been gone for almost 5 hours. With no call or text from y/n.
They arrive at the motel and a tense silence falls over the car when they see the motel door wide open.
âY/n?â Dean calls, getting out of the car as fast as possible. Itâs soon followed by Sam and Dean calling out her name with no response.
The room is a wreck. An even bigger wreck than the one they left. A lamp is tipped over and shattered on the ground, leaving glass everywhere. There is blood on the floor and a little on the bed sheets. Deanâs heart is beating faster and faster with every time he repeats her name. Sam calls her phone and hears the ringtone from under the bed.
âMaybe she went out?â Sam tries, also panicking.
âWithout us? Without her phone? And without a car?â Dean is almost shouting.
Both of them stop rushing around and freeze when Dean picks up something from his pillow.
A single pink rose with bloody thorns.
