Damsel in Dis Dress - [Bethany & Alistair]
Alistair walked over to where Bethany stood. He peered over the edge as she did, looking down. The stairs were an old iron fire escape, zig-zagging down the side of the building. The girl was right, the steps ended about a story and a half above the ground. It wasnât a terribly long fall, as long as they were able to jump the right way and brace themselves properly for the impact.
The structure, however, was in even worse repair than the ladders they had used to climb up. The iron, left alone to the outside elements, was rusted beyond repair. The end of the staircase had probably rusted off years ago. He walked his way around the roof of the building looking over the edges cautiously, in case a goon or two was looking up their way.
Alistair licked his lips nervously when he returned to Bethany and the rusty escape. âWell, it looks like this is our only option.â He stared hard at it, rubbing a finger and thumb on his stubbly jaw line. A gust of cool night wind whipped around at them, making the rusted iron creak.
He looked at Bethany, an idea suddenly hitting him. âYou donât⌠happen to know any magic that could give us a softer landing, like, I donât know, a magical wind to slow our way, or something?â He honestly had no idea if such magic existed, and if it did the likelihood of her knowing any. Heâd seen elements like fire, ice, and lightning used by mages he had known, but, wind, he couldnât honestly say heâd seen. But then who could see wind? He wondered suddenly what kind of magic healing and barrier magic fell under.
âI could try to go down first, and if the thing collapses, then if youâve got anything that could soften the blow, then, that would be helpful. Or if you could cast it on yourself, I could be at the bottom, spotting you like before?â He looked at her, eyes hopefully searching her face as though hoping to read her thoughts that what he was suggesting was possible.
Bethany stared hard at the fire escape. As if, somehow, an easier and less noticeable way down was possible. She moved her eyes only to watch Alistair glance down the other sides of the building. A sigh left her when he had as much luck as she did. âI was hoping you would find another way downâ she said as amber eyes turned back toward the rusted metal. It wasnât as though going down the stairs wasnât possible. They would just have to be cautious. Meaning they would have to take their time.
And a faster escape sounded better. If the drunken men knew they went out to the roof, it was only a matter of time before a couple of them exited the building to look around.
Her attention turned back to the male when he asked if she knew any magic to soften a fall. âSadly, I do not. Fire and ice are what I know best, with a little bit of healing and forceâŚâ she paused to turn her eyes downward once again. âI thinkâŚI have an idea.â If the pieces of the fire escape were still around, she might be able to put some of it back together. It would only be a temporary fix, but a solution none the less.
âCould you stand back for just a moment?â she asked Alistair. While she was good at controlling her magic and making sure it didnât harm those around her, she much rather take any possibility out of the equation. Only when he was away from the edge of the building did she reach out her hands and grab a hold of the metal railing. Ice shot across the metal almost instantly, snaking its way down the entire fire escape and reaching onto the side of the building. It was a temporary fix to the crumbling metal and the possibility of the entire escape falling down.
She removed one of her hands from the railing before taking a careful step onto their escape. It would hold. Turning her eyes to look back at Alistair she nodded. âWe should be safe going down now, once I get to the end I think I saw a solution to the drop. Iâll start heading down firstâ she told him.
Cautiously, she began her descent. The ice wasnât slippery, she made sure of that. And she also made sure to make it as strong as possible, but it was still ice holding together metal that could possibly be weaker than they thought. Once she was at the end of the stairs she stopped and glanced up to take note of Alistairâs progress down. It looked like he was doing fine so far, and she hadnât heard any yelling. But she knew better than to waste time when she wasnât sure about how much she had.
A quick glance over the alleyway they were in confirmed what she thought she saw from the roof. A large dumpster. The heavy lids were closed over the top, luckily. She did not want to end up returning home smelling like garbage. Literally. However, if need be, it could serve as a hiding spot.
Bethany held her hands out in the direction of the dumpster and took a couple of slow measured breaths. Elemental magic came easier to her, like breathing. It was also the first kind of magic to show itself when she was a young girl. But that did not mean that she wasnât taught other spells or types of magic.
Suddenly, she closed her hands and pulled them close to her body, as if she had grabbed something and pulled it closer. Which was exactly what she had done. The dumpster was pulled toward the fire escape and stopped just under it. They still had to drop down, but it was less of a fall and therefore softer than if they tried to jump to the ground. Bethany quickly turned her eyes toward Alistair who was finally toward the end of the stairs. âTime to go, if any of them were out here⌠That may have alerted them to our location.â
