Ginga no Shinanai Kodomotachi e
When I was a child I did nothing but read. I sat and read everywhere and any time I could. As time went on I lost this passion I once had when I was younger. Now I've rekindled this relationship I had with reading and I'm really trying to pursue it again.
I just finished reading "Ginga no Shinanai Kodomotachi e" or "For Immortal Children in the Galaxy" (Shikawa, Yuuki)
It's a very beautiful story revolving around 2 immortal children, pi and makki, exploring the earth and learning carefully through the infinite time they have
It's definitely a short read, only 16 chapters and can be completed in a short time. Even though it is short it gets its point across very well and is an interesting and thought provoking story.
Right from the start I didn't know what to expect with the story. I had simply glimpsed over the description and jumped straight into reading. Even then I don't believe I would be prepared for the interesting, saddening, and intensity of the story.
To start, the art style and dialogue really add onto the story as a whole. The chibi style used for the characters while being slapped on a rough and overgrown earth really adds onto the overall feeling given by the story. Not only their appearance but their behavior as children add onto the harshness of their reality. This added to the uncomfortableness of the story and committed a lot to the emotions I had while reading.
This story covers topics such as literature and learning, natural occurrences such as death and reproduction, forming bonds, and human spirit (good and bad). I believe that it does a wonderful job at showing the harshness and wonders of life through the eyes of the youth.
After years and years of living and exploring, the two siblings decide to pursue a hunt for human life on earth. On a fortunate day, the two siblings meet at an astronaut, who is giving birth the moment she crash landed. Shortly after the birth of the child, the astronaut dies, leaving these children to care for the baby.
Pi and Makki raise Mira, the human astronaut's child,as a family. The two hide her from their mother due to a rule that they are not allowed to have pets. Mira eventually grows up to be older than her parents and begins to decline in health due to the poisonous nature of the new earth.
After the death of Mira, Pi and Makki struggle with their immortality and the concept of what it means to live. After a confrontation with their mother they find out that in order to relieve themselves of having to be immortal, they must flee the planet in which their mother stays. Makki had found a rocketship and reveals to Pi the plan.
In the end Makki decides to stay back with their mother and Pi flees the planet alone in a spaceship.
Immortal Children in the Galaxy is a thought provoking and interesting read that offers a lot for its limited length. It definitely explores a lot regarding what it means to live and invites the reader on the journey. The style of the writing and the art is simple yet impactful to the reader through the uncomfortable atmosphere in the story.
