Gifts had never been his forte or strong suit. But… a lot could change over time, a sentiment he knew she understood, given everything they'd endured over the years.

He does his best to create a vibrant floral arrangement - it's nothing fancy, shoddy work even, not as good as his mother's would have been, he hums, gloved fingers reaching out to adjust one of the stray stems left leaning to the side ever so slightly. It's an attempt, though, a surprise he'd attempted to conjure using the vibrant white and gold blooms near Winhill he'd brought back from his most recent visit.

Like sunshine in physical form, Squall hopes it captures the same lighthearted feeling Selphie persistently exuded. Stepping back from where he'd left it, placed on the table (he ignores the earful he'd get from Xu later for abusing his power to break and enter later…), eyes scanning over the bright yellow roses, the white lilies and carnations framing around the bits of gold for odd spacing between the ferns - huffing, he crosses his arms over his chest. He deems it good enough, spins on his heel, and leaves the premises.

No card, but he knew she was sharp enough to know it was meant for her birthday.

At first, Selphie was pleasantly surprised when she came back to her room and found the flowers, wondering if somehow she'd forgotten bringing them in herself. But she eventually figured out that no, they had been sneakily left by someone else while she was gone, despite the lack of a card declaring where it had come from. She focused on the missing sender's name for only a few moments, instead shifting to being absolutely delighted at being able to see the pretty bouquet whenever she walked by the table.

It was certainly the type of arrangement that captured her attention and fit her personality quite well. She probably couldn't have done much better herself if she tried.

With a little bit of investigation and process of elimination of the others she did see throughout her birthday, it wasn't terribly hard to figure out the source of the arrangement. But rather than make a big deal of it for everyone to hear, Selphie bided her time until Squall was by himself before she wandered over and gave him a small nudge with her shoulder, grinning up at him. "Thanks for the flowers, Squall. You're gettin' pretty good at this gift-giving thing."

A few of the prettiest blooms would be saved before they wilted away, pressed between the pages of some books on her shelves so they could be dried and preserved as a reminder of the gift, added to the ever-growing collection of her most precious memories.

Her curiosity was piqued once she heard his voice, the magazine she'd been flipping through set aside so she could follow after. Considering he'd previously gifted her with a book of spells (some that she had been trying out in secret), she wasn't quite sure what he could be plotting that needed her to go outside. But she knew that sound when she started out the door--

"Yusuke!" His name was spoken in such a high pitch of surprise that it almost sounded like a squeak, and Selphie lit up immediately as she gently took the fluffy chick from him. "You actually found one!? How? Where!?"

She didn't wait for any answers to those questions, however, leaning up to press a very grateful kiss to his lips. "Thank you! One step closer to my dream of havin' a chocobo farm!" Selphie then turned her attention to the chick with a few affectionate pets to its head. "And you are gonna need a very noble yet ferocious name, aren't you?"
