also i don’t think rapunzel’s greatest fear is losing cass as a friend, or even the black rocks taking hold of corona, whoever it may be at the helm. i think her greatest fear is not being able to do something about it. i think her greatest fear in general is feeling helpless, is feeling like she is not in control of her life and the outcome of it. leaving her tower, leaving gothel, was the most profound act of freedom she’s ever experienced — and may ever experience in her life. because it wasn’t her just exercising her rights to freedom, it was her gaining them. it was her gaining the first shred of control over her own life. it was her finally understanding that her decisions in that tower, her decisions for the first (film canon) 18 years of her life, were not her decisions. her favorite food isn’t hazelnut soup, it’s the first thing she eats when she leaves the tower. her favorite book isn’t gothel’s old and worn copy of shakespearean sonnets, it’s the book she finds arianna rereading over and over in the study during tea. the decisions she makes when she leaves that tower are the first steps on the road to control over her life that rapunzel didn’t even know she was missing.
