Of course I got my zine done on time but guess what, my creative hasn’t reply to my interview yet. She promised that she would answer before 27th of May but it just so happened that her kids got into some trouble, further delaying the process. All I have to do at this point in time is to put the answer into those text-boxes. It is unfortunate but I’m not going to ask for an extension. There’s so excuse to this tardiness, and it’s my mistake to request the answer so close to deadline. If anything, it’s my fault to begin with. Now I pray.

I have learned a lot of thing inside and outside of the workshop, and of course the lecture. What I love most about Communication design class is the content it covers and how adorable Karen and Andy are when they’re together. The lecture might be less popular among the peer but I feel like it’s the most fun I’ve had in any lecture hall. I’ve always been fascinated by histories, and the lecture just kept on delivering. To have Andy making connections between a design from ancient era and the current time makes it even more interesting. What I’m most intrigued by is the development of design in the middle ages to industrial revolution.

As for the workshops, I have also discovered a lot of thing and how it came to be. Pangram, Making of a zine, a different way to exhibit and having an exhibition itself as a design. It’s such a satisfying experience and a very helpful one, too.

It didn’t really feel like I was going to school, but more like a weekly activity. I also met my dear friends through this class which is a blessing. It’s a good times for real, yo.

| My Relationship with the Creative

The fact that I’m 7 years younger than my brother and 9 years younger than my sister forced me to grow up in quite a competitive and mature environment. Children book is a rather foreign thing to me. Of course, I have read some children books, was told some tales and all those children-ny stuff but it felt lacking and insignificant. However, upon discovering her through my friend (they’re related), I grew to be more familiar with those kind of writing and intrigued by the fact that I’m entertained though I don’t understand what’s going on in the book. That makes me think about how our mind develops. As we grow up we question things that is out of ordinary. For example, in Baek Heena’s “Cloud Bread”, two kittens were able to fly after eating a bread baked from cloud. My first thought was that it's unrealistic and childish. But in the world of the book, it doesn’t have to make sense. After that, I realise that it’s true how people tend to be less creative as they grow up. We think more logically, analytically, and rationally. A child could believe themselves to be something they’re not, be it a dinosaur, plants, gorilla, Spiderman, and countless things that adult wouldn’t imagine themselves to be. Growing up being the youngest child strayed me from those imaginations. At a really young age, I remember myself thinking that stories that has talking animals in it are stupid, that some idea in those books are not plausible. Now I’m starting to understand why children book is a wonderful thing. Not because of its remarkable situation or imagination. To me it’s how an adult could connect with a mind of a child. Having never been that kid really saddens me, but I’m glad that I can at least appreciate something that I’ve overlooked for my whole life

Zine is one of the thing that is more complicated that it looks. Upon learning the process of making a zine, I was intrigued and sad at the same time. I was sad because now that I know it’s not as easy as I thought, I can’t just wait til the last week and start experimenting, and that’s only for a normal zine not a funky creative one.

Emoji. Before its invention, there were emoticon. Emoticon is “a pictorial representation of facial expression using characters”.

 1976 - The first emoticon appeared in PLATO. 

1986 -  an emoticon :-) was sent for the first time in an email by Scott Fahlman. 

1999 - Shigetaka Kurita invented the emoji

Through a constant changes and evolution, it transformed into the emoji that we all know. Emoji was meant to convey a deeper expression when texting, ridding a problem that caused countless girlfriends’ misunderstanding. In 2018, emoji mean something more than that. It is everywhere.😱 On your facebook wall. Every meme page ever. Your chat with literally everyone. Even in the cinema, though it lasted less than a month. What deeper meaning could it have other than a face that you actually make when texting? Here’s the answer, it is the peak of globalisation. You go to Japan and show them 😂, they’ll know your lmfao-ing in an instant. You could literally go to anywhere and use emoji to communicate. It is the Everest of communication design. The symbol of peaked civilisation. Emoji breaks all the language barrier, bringing humanity back to its very root. Using facial expression? Who has time for that anymore. 😕

The difference between designer and artist is merely their products. Of course, a design can be art, and vice-versa. Though this converse relationship may not always be true, it still shows a deep relationship between these two things. So I want to explore the reason people think of these two word so differently. Let’s reduce it down to its simplest form, a definition from google.

Now I think you can see my point that design can be art. This is how I interpret these two words. Art is used to make an idea to something tangible. Design is also to realize an idea to something tangible. Yes I said that twice, but here’s the catch. Design is meant for people to understand, it has a clear message. Whilst its counterpart, art, is more subjective and open to more interpretation. You might say “oy mate, design can be open to multiple interpretation, as well.”. Yes, that’s true, but the difference is that design like that is probably always intentional and most of the time obvious. On the other hand, we’ll never know the meaning behind an artwork, a painting, sculpture, whatever, until we ask its creator.

I searched up “designer” and this picture is the first one that came up.

This week’s studio brought an interesting perspective to me, thanks to Andy and Karen for mentioning that too, of course. It is about the contrast of our exhibitions. One room’s exhibition was more like traditional gallery. Works are displayed. There’s a certain path for audience to navigate. Simple. 

The other one put the whole exhibition (that is about a question regarding) into yet another question “Where are the design”. The whole exhibition was a fun little event. Each work was hidden on a certain spot which has its clue shown obvious enough to reveal its location, but vague enough to make the room feel empty.

In this week studio, we’ve discussed about pangram and cursive.

I find it very interesting how someone had figured out to put every alphabet into a sentence of six words.

Most people might say that idea is to be expressed. I don’t entirely agree. Sure your idea might be the craziest thing that no one surely thought of it, but to conceptualise those thoughts into something tangible is difficult. What will any idea worth if it’s unable to share.

Sometime good ideas are so hard to come by, especially the closer it is to due date so here’s what I do when I’m out of idea: look around

I think a lot of people tend to overlook their surrounding and miss so many opportunities of creating something interesting. Many creations are inspired by the things that existed everywhere. Velcro was designed according to a specie of plant. Bullet trains are inspired by Kingfisher. When you’re out of idea, just look around.

Tablet. Saying that to people nowadays and people will probably think of iPad, Surface or the likes. It’s one of those words that’s lost its original meaning to the more recent invention. I find it very intriguing how such an object can come back from irrelevance to arguably the most widespread piece of technology. Before gaining its definition as what we know today, it used to be a sheet of clay with something written/drawn on it. Those two are vastly different, well that’s only natural after all it’s been five millennium since tablet has gained its form. iPad can be so many things at the same time, be it a clock, calculator, note, source of entertainment, camera, and countless other possibilities.  Though different in many way, it has a lot of similarity. Its name, form, significance in our lives haven’t really change since the ancient time. One thing that clay tablet can still do better is retaining its form; keeping the information passed on. The information written on those artefact will probably survive longer than those we put on iCloud. That got me thinking. Maybe. Just maybe. Mesopotamian might already have something similar to iPad but those might’ve given up the test of time. I guess, in the future, those remnants of our play-doh might actually have more historical background that electronic tablet. Who knows.

| Communication

Oftentimes we overlook things around us that we can utilize to communicate, instead we look to a more sophisticated solution to the problem. In this case, writing would be our ideal mean to communicate right? It’s simple, effective, and it doesn’t look dumb. But limiting ourselves to using only one way to tell a story/message to the others is in itself quite dull. By using anything that we possess to create a letter is fun, though it isn’t fast and efficient like writing. It tells a lot of thing about us than just spoken words. How we arrange/use object speaks a lot about our character, whether you’re a creative person, organized, confident, etc. There’s a lot more to communication than a spelled out word, it is also about how you’re write it.
