[[ Iâve really started to love the idea of N learning to cook and bake, primarily because itâs something he is absolutely not good at and will take a lot of work and time to become good at. His first attempts at cooking when he was on his own after BW were literally inedible, and that immediately put him off even trying for years. But now, heâs finally in a place where perfection isnât necessary and failure isnât punished. He can safely make mistakes and learn at his own pace, and thatâs a big thing for him.
While she's always gifted him sweet pi-related treats in the past, this year she's decided to try something different. Since she's a bit concerned about him not eating well, she brings him a half dozen little vegetable pot pies in ramekins that he can easily reheat in his oven. There are some very rough-looking pi signs etched on the crusts but she tried her best.
"Here! I just wanted to make sure you ate well today." She makes no comment on his kitchen's state of disaster, choosing instead to flash him a big smile. "Happy Birthday, N!"
It's a mitigated disaster, at least. Most of the mess is relegated to the countertop ... and two of the Larvesta, and the front of N's apron. The berry filling had apparently spilled at some point, and the flour had, unsurprisingly, covered far more surfaces than it had any good reason to. N is taking the last of his own baked creations out of Alder's oven when Rosa arrives, and the whole kitchen smells of tangy sweet qualot berry and only slightly burnt pastry.
He beams at the sight of Rosa's pies, especially once he recognizes the letter cut into the crusts. "Thank you!" He takes a moment to smell one of them, getting in close to get their scent over the sweeter scent of the dessert pies.
"Have you had lunch? Do you want to have one now? Oh!" He sets the savory pies aside and retrieves one of the berry pies from the rack on the stove. "I was going to bring this to you. It's not as nice as yours," and, in fact, the pi symbol it its crust is even more jagged and awkward, "but ... hopefully it's turned out alright."
This particular venture was not, admittedly, as successful as N had hoped it would be. The crust was a disappointment: both burnt and soggy, and half-sunken atop some of the pies. The berry filling had bubbled out of a few, and the symbol he'd cut in each top was only half-legible on most.
Still, he'd been expecting a full-on disaster, He bit into the most destroyed of the set, and it tasted fine, even where the overflowing filling had blackened in the oven. The berries had cooked thoroughly, and even if the crust didn't complement the pie well, it didn't detract, either.
This was ... alright. He'd do better next year, maybe, but these would be okay for now.
If you would like a Pi Day/Birthday mini pie from N, comment on this post! I donât have time to send anything out before work, but Iâll plan to get to them when I get home.
Cosmic Piece of Pi!
Did you know that pi is involved nearly anywhere you look? Weâre not talking about your favorite pastry! Pi (also written as the Greek letter đš, or the number 3.14159âŚ) is an irrational number, which means it canât be written as a simple fraction like ½. It is the ratio of a circleâs circumference (the distance around its edge) to its diameter (the distance across it) and will always be the same number, regardless of the circleâs size. Here are some places you can find pi in the universe around us!
Our Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, TESS, watches slices of the sky in its hunt for worlds outside our solar system â how many exoplanets are in its night-sky pie? Last July, TESS scientists created a mosaic of 208 images of the southern sky. At that time, it contained 29 confirmed and 1,000 possible exoplanets, and weâre still studying the data to find more. Since this awe-inspiring image is of the southern hemisphere (or half of a 3D circle), there will always be pi! Every slice contains something delicious for scientists to study.
Pi recently played a crucial role in new discoveries about Alpha Draconis, a well-studied pair of stars. After discovering these stars regularly eclipse each other, pi helped scientists learn more about them. Scientists detected the eclipses while monitoring the brightness of Alpha Draconis for periodic dips that couldâve been caused by planets passing between the star and us. Instead of a planet, though, researchers found that its smaller partner in crime was passing in between us and the larger star for about six hours at a time! đŤ
Pi comes in handy as we learn more about these two stars. Knowing the percentage of the decrease in Alpha Draconisâ light and the formula for the area of a circle (A=đšr2 â or area equals pi times the square of the circleâs radius), scientists can predict the sizes of both stars. Â Because stars typically orbit in an elliptical (or oval) shape, pi also helps scientists use the detection of these eclipses to figure out the orbits of the two stars!
So far weâve seen pi in many places! But itâs also interesting to look at where pi canât be found! We mentioned earlier that many orbit calculations involve pi ⌠but not every one does! Pi does not factor into calculations of hyperbolic orbits â orbits that arenât complete, or donât return to where they started â the same way that it does with elliptical orbits! This is most commonly seen with comets. While many comets orbit normally in our solar system, some oddballs just pass through, like the interstellar âOumuamua that zipped passed us in 2017. âď¸
Perhaps the most popular place you may find pi is in the shape of a typical pie! While NASAâs Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope studies gamma-rays, and not blueberries, we think this cool Fermi pie is worth sharing for Pi Day!
Find more ways scientists look up at the night sky and use pi here. And now, donât be irrational, and go have some pi(e)! đĽ§

unovasheroineâ:
The cool air the dragon of truth has stirred up is soothing, causing for her to close her eyes for a mere moment. She opens them once more when Reshiram speaks, merely giving him a nod to show her understanding. The dragon is right afterall, they are both shaken and lucky to be alive. They need to get somewhere safe and clean up before their will be an opportunity for a real conversation.Â
Zekrom continues to let her lean against them, and while the adrenaline is starting to fade, it hasnât truly set in yet that if it werenât for the dragonsâ interference she wouldnât be alive.
With Zekrom supporting her, and the Larvestaâs presence against her, she feels herself beginning to calm. That is, until the words N has spoken reach her ears. âNo,â She blurts out at once, gaze shifting from N to Reshiram. Fumbling slightly, she shifts her weight to stand on her own. The dizziness she feels hasnât improved, and the thought of going to Opelucidâs hospital from here isnât helping. It feels too similar to three years back, when the league had deemed that she needed her injuries looked at, when her Samurottâs wounds had needed more treatment than the healing items sheâd had on her could provide. The mere thought of it all made her stomach turn. âWeâll attract too much attention in Opelucid, I really donât want to pull others into this. Iâll be fine after a few days Iâm sure.â
This is the part where he should argue. Where he should insist. She's hurt. A head injury. That's not something he should try to look after on his own. She needs humans. Ones who know what they're doing. His mind tumbles back to the forest, and the broken tree branch, and the scolding she'd given him about first aid. Not him. Not for so many reasons.
He should argue, but he's horrible instead: he's too exhausted to even try. Every nerve is raw, and every muscle is weak, and his mouth still tastes like vomit and dust and a bit of blood. And worse, he's relieved, because he absolutely does not want to go to Opelucid, and the only reason he would is because he needs her to be safe.
He leans his head back and stares at the sky until the vertigo of all that blue makes him shift it back to the treeline. "I--I'll take you home, then. Nuvema. You--"
But she shoots that down, too, and he's horrible and relieved again; no, he doesn't want to go there, either, not at all.
Another half-dozen suggestions and a fit of coughing go by (can't escape the castle: it travels with you, it fills your lungs and chokes you, can't get free--) and he's wrecked. Tapped. Fully empty. He's stopped staring at the sky to curl in against his knees. If he thinks about anything too hard, he knows heâll be useless. More useless than now.
Get her somewhere safe. Get them somewhere safe. Hilda, Zekrom, Reshiram, Umber ...
"I have ... I have to take Umber home. Alder's. Cabin. He won't mind. Mountains. Quiet. 'S far, though. Is that alright?"
He bites his lip and realizes that it's cracked dry. That's where the blood taste came from. "Is there any water left? I--" He catches himself. He wants it, but they might need it on the way. "I'll carry it. Or just--I'll carry the bottle, if it's empty. Or if you want what's left now."
"I'm tired of ultimatums. This or that. Binary decision-making."
He used to believe it was ignorant and absurd to think otherwise. Of course there were no-win scenarios. Of course you had to choose one over another. And maybe that still was the case. But, "There is no point to making those sorts of decisions ahead of time. If such a decision must be made, you cannot anticipate what additional data may need to be factored into your decision. Better to focus your attention on making sure you never need to make such a decision in the first place."
Larvesta evolution
Unlike moths and despite the âcocoonâ of fire that is said to enshroud them during evolution, Larvesta are not true larva and do not pass through a pupal stage before reaching the imago form of Volcarona. Instead, they are nymphs and participate in hemimetabolism or incomplete metamorphosis. They must grow their new form within the confines of their current body and escape their nymph exoskeleton to evolve.
Although evolution is relatively simple for some, it can also be an extremely difficult, uncomfortable, and often dangerous process.
During the days and weeks leading up to evolution, Larvesta can be extremely vulnerable, as the process affects their reflexes and consumes considerable energy while making it increasingly difficult for them to eat. Â Also, while other nymph Bugs, such as Nincada, molt their exoskeleton and leave it behind, Larvesta burn their way free. Â To evolve, Larvesta must be capable of both manipulating and withstanding extreme temperatures. Â As evolution nears, a Larvestaâs temperature may vary wildly as its body attempts to both adjust to confinement and prepare for that final step. It is not uncommon for a Larvesta to be killed by predators during these final days, succumb to exhaustion and starvation, or to otherwise fail in burning free of their nymph form.
In ancient times, Volcarona populations were large enough to defend evolving Larvesta and aid with evolution. Â Their relationship with the humans of the day also offered them protection and assistance. Â In modern times, however, Larvesta and Vocarona populations have become dangerously small to the point where even existing wild Volcarona agree that they may not survive without outside help.
To make matters worse, because so few Larvesta survive to become Volcarona, they have evolved the ability to reproduce before reaching their adult imago form. The Larvesta born from unevolved parents have an increasingly difficult time completing their own evolution. Â Breeding Larvesta is highly discouraged.

âThe Battle Subway was my worst experience of the human world.â Battling after being shunted around at high speeds in an enclosed space for Elesaâs gym was bad enough, but holding the actual battles on a moving capsule--
No, he would not like to do that ever again. âMy brother thought it was fun, though.â
A gift box shows up at N's house, containing a whole pile of books. Upon closer inspection, they all seem to be romantic comedies. There's a note attached to it that says, "Since you wanted to learn more about romance, here's some research material. Happy holidays! -I.K."
Well, this is odd. Someone knew where he was staying and came all the way into the mountains to leave him a gift? N doesn't recognize the initials, either. Who might he have been asking for information about romance?
The pokemon insist that none of them happened to see whomever dropped off the package. They were all busy with other things when it arrived.
Highly unusual.
N is even more confused when he opens the box. He recognizes the style of cover on these books. In fact, he recognizes two he had already read, having been tucked into the small bookshelf in Alder's guest room. One had been wholly unbelievable and confusing, but the other had been an unexpectedly charming study of human relationships. He wishes he could remember which Alder had said had the more realistic representation of the two.
Well! Regardless of whether these are accurate romantic representations, as a whole they will surely be a good example of cultural romantic expectations. He'll have to thank I.K., whenever he figures out who that is.
