suguru watches with an endearing gaze that softens his lavender eyes as the girls, mimiko and nanako, run off with their baskets to pick fruit. they’re wearing strawberry- and cherry-print dresses, respectively, that suguru made for them.
“i’m glad we’re doing this. look how excited they are,” you say, your own eyes gentle and your smile tender.
suguru squeezes your hand in agreement, his fingers laced with his as you follow the girls.
you turn to look up at him only to find that he’s already looking at you with the same look in his eyes. like you’re his whole world. it makes your heart stutter, and the way the late-spring sun casts a glow on him like he’s sunlight itself only makes it worse.
he smiles, a little teasing, the rest soft, because he knows what he does to you. he brings your entwined hands up to his mouth, brushing his lips over your knuckles. and you’re sure that he must be able to hear your heart thudding against your ribcage, as if you haven’t been together for a few years now.
there’s a camera strap hanging off his neck, and he uses his free hand to point the camera at you and snap a picture before you can even blink.
“my pretty girl,” he says to himself, tugging you along with him towards your eight-year-olds who are already crouched down, reaching into the shrubs to pluck ruby-like strawberries.
once they decide that they’ve gotten enough, they lead you and suguru to another area of the fruit farm to pick blueberries and then raspberries.
“be careful of any thorns, girls,” suguru reminds softly, crouching with them to help them and make sure that they don’t hurt themselves.
“we know, we know,” nanako says, reaching carefully for the raspberries.
suguru tenderly pats both of their heads. “i know, you’re my smart girls. i’m just reminding you; i know you’re excited.”
their baskets soon become full of a variety of fruit, reds and blues, with a few kiwis as well. and when suguru suggests that they go pick some vegetables, nanako scrunches her nose up while mimiko shakes her head.
“fine, i’ll make an exception this time. only because today is for you two,” suguru relents, almost immediately. he’d do anything to make his daughters happy.
as you walk to the exit to pay for your harvest, you all plan what to do with the load of fruits that they picked.
“can we make strawberry tarts? oh! and we can use the blueberries for muffins,” mimiko says excitedly, her smaller hand holding yours, and she swings your arm.
suguru laughs softly, unable to contain the fondness that swells in his heart. spring looks so pretty on him.
“of course we can. maybe i can make blueberry sauce to have with pancakes for breakfast tomorrow, too.”
both of the girls eagerly agree, already thinking about all the desserts they’re going to be able to have.
fruit picking is definitely going to become a frequent activity for your family, seasonal desserts filling the scent of your home.
