reminder that the books themselves also suck ass actually. there's an entire plotline endorsing slavery. the one character who advocates to end slavery is bullied and made fun of. the one slave who doesnt like being enslaved is bullied and treated as an outcast. the bankers are the picture of racist stereotypes of jewish people. the one asian character is named fckn Cho Chang. the worldbuilding SUCKS. fuck harry potter and fuck rowling. stop giving her your money.
I'm not trying to take a spotlight from trans people and I'm against trans hate, however I always wonder why isn't this happening to russian literature? Why are people so comfortable in judging someone who reads HP, but when it comes to russian authors it's totally okay. Keep in mind that J.K. doesn't send thousands of missiles every day to bomb trans people (thank god!) but russians do! They kill Ukrainian children, rape Ukrainian women and torture Ukrainian men in captivity. But somehow I don't see posts encouraging to ban russian literature and cancel russian authors. Why is that?!
Please tell me which MODERN Russian author has been both speaking out as Putin's mouthpiece and directly funding the war you're talking about? People aren't cancelling Tolstoy for the same reason they aren't telling people to never read Lovecraft, despite him being a known racist. He's a) dead and b) not directly contributing to the persecution and death of thousands of people. This is about current harms!
Yes of course the war in Ukraine is bad! But unless they are directly funding it and encouraging people to go to war then that Russian author isn't doing anything of the same nature as Rowling. Rowling has literally influenced policy on trans people and used her significant social media presence as well. If you're going to go that route then we should cancel every single author in the UK and the US! Please use your critical thinking skills here. They're not the same.
Hm, I don't know maybe Sergei Lukyanenko, Zakhar Prilepin, Alexander Prokhanov... And the narrative "they aren't very famous in the West, so it doesn't count" isn't working here. Literature had and still has a huge value as a propaganda tool. It has the power to influence people, manipulate them even. Those authors I've mentioned are either vocal supporters of the Kremlin or work for a propaganda machine themselves. If you didn't hear about them doesn't mean they don't exist. Zakhar Prilepin raised funds and coordinated material support for pro-russian military forces fighting in Ukraine through his own charitable foundation. Other pro-war public figures, including nationalist "Z-poets" and state-aligned war correspondents, have used book royalties or crowdfunding platforms to supply gear to russian troops.
The one thing you're forgetting is that "famous russian literature" is used as a propaganda instrument to influence western audiences by appealing to the narrative about "priceless world heritage". But there is a price - thousands of Ukrainians being killed and not only Ukrainians. Would you like to talk about the USSR and russian authors working for the regiment against their own colleagues? The Union of Soviet Writers used a centralized apparatus of russian-dominated leadership and loyalist figures to enforce ideological conformity, draft collective denunciations, and produce state propaganda against any dissident colleagues across the entire USSR. You should really educate yourself on the topic before speaking. And the best way to start is The "Executed Renaissance" (Rozstriliane vidrodzhennia). And the dumbest argument "they are dead already". Well they might have offspring? They could have a succession (built on books that spread a hateful agenda). But I digress. The point is that we didn't have a problem cancelling books of D.H. Lawrence and Mark Twain despite them being dead. Yes, it was long ago, but people did it, because they thought they were problematic. Toni Morrison, Laura Ingalls Wilder, damn, even Dr. Seuss. Several notable authors have experienced sharp modern re-evaluations, posthumous "cancellation" over controversial views, or targeted efforts to remove their books from school programs. But somehow when it comes to russian literature - it's intouchable. Nabokov with his deliberate rejection of political and social morality in art and disturbing obsession with underaged girls' bodies. Tolstoy, who was not only an open misogynist but also an abuser towards his own wife (but yeah, we skip that because "worlds heritage" yeah, yeah). Or Dostoevsky, who was considered anti-Semitic. And a lot of their beliefs are depicted and promoted in their writings. Should I continue?
As I said don't cherry-pick only those who are unpleasant to you personally. If the author or literature in general is problematic - it should be cancelled. And probably we should start we all those fuckers from Ep files. You know what I do? Before buying a book I do a little research if the person that wrote it isn't controversial. If they have a "reputation" - I don't buy a book. No matter how famous they are, how "valuable" the lessons in those books are. Don't care! If another person must have suffered for that book to be written: if someone got targeted, abused (physically, mentally, sexually, financially), humiliated - it's a fucking trash to me. Period. And it should work for every case, not only if I dislike someone personally. Hope this helps.

Probably because most of us on Tumblr don't speak Russian. Individual Russians who aren't in the military are also not to blame for what is happening in Ukraine
Oh, for real ? So they - individual russians - don't pay taxes that later finance missiles that bomb Ukraine? Or probably they - individual russians - didn't vote for putin after the full scale invasion that helped him get reelected once again. Or maybe they - individual russian - don't make fun of dead Ukrainians all over social media? Also, as far as I know russian literature that's being studied in schools around the world is translated to the native languages, so the "we don't speak russian" excuse isn't working here. My point is that your deliberate cancel culture is hypocritical, because you cancel only those people who are unpleasant to you personally. In a bigger picture you don't really care about people, because if you would you'd be cancelling all the bad people. When we say protect Ukrainians we mean all of them - straight, gay, trans, black, white, asian, men, women, children, non-binary, asexual etc... Your cancel culture is a joke!
