every time his father would come home, the hard, nasty rasp of his voice hitting his ears like a waning siren, simon would dart down the hall and hide underneath his bed. holding his breath and hoping with all of his small being that his father was drunk enough that he’d be left alone that day. not to be dragged out into the streets of Manchester to the nearest pub that reeked of cigarette smoke and bodily fluids. he hid for hours, sometimes whole afternoons came and went in anticipation. most of the time, it worked.

but the rare days when his father wasn’t out of his mind before mid noon, he’d find simon. would twist him by the arm and drag his body out full force. simon wouldn’t squirm or cry, only crawl out in defeat and mentally prepare himself for whatever came next.
