📷 "Milly... I don't really know if this is a good idea." Meryl felt really out of her element for a number of reasons. She was dressed in a white, sporty bikini top and a pair of matching swim shorts for one. But she managed to keep her hat on for some reason. This was a night time swimming event where the waters were lit up by fireflies. She could tell from the shore that it was really pretty, but...
She seemed a little apprehensive about stepping into the water.
"I wouldn't say I'm the strongest swimmer. Pretty weak, actually. It probably wouldn't be very fun for you to follow me around to make sure I'm okay."
"Well, that's okay, Meryl! I don't really know how to swim either, so I guess that makes two of us. It feels a lot better not being alone, right?" Not the most reassuring thing to say... With resources on Gunsmoke being so scarce, water included, she never even thought she'd get the chance to do something like this, but that made it all the more exciting for her. "Besides! We don't really have to swim," she added, taking a few steps further and looking towards Meryl expectantly. "We could always stand in the water and enjoy the moment!" Her tone was hopeful, emphasizing the simplicity and joy of just being near the water, regardless of swimming abilities (... or lack thereof).
"I mean, I was gonna tell ya eventually—!"
He kind of just... wanted to ease into it. Milly's more perceptive than people give her credit for, and he can't help but wonder just how much she noticed between him and Vash back home. Maybe more than they noticed themselves. Still, her surprise is genuine. So is her excitement. Wolfwood clears his throat.
"Was the beginning of June... few weeks ago," he says. He can feel his ears heating up and he suddenly seems incredibly interested in one of the apples sitting in a bowl on the island. "Under that one huge tree. In another part a' the city."
Oh, he's feeling dizzy. Is anyone else dizzy? Just him?
"Plenty of other celebrations for you t'look forward to, anyway."
Under a big tree, huh? It must’ve been real pretty — no wonder why they picked that venue out. “I don’t think I’ve seen that yet! Do you have any pictures?” Since she missed out on experiencing it firsthand, this seems like the next best option.
Milly, too, has started to take a vague interest in elsewhere, her attention drawn to the enticing aroma wafting from the pot on the stove. She stands over it, her curiosity piqued as the smell starts to fill the kitchen.
“I’ll hold you to it, Mister Wolfwood,” That’s right! Now that they're together here, they have plenty of time to make new memories. "We should grab drinks sometime! You, me, and Mister Vash! It would be fun, right?”
With preemptive cheer and a disposition fit for making friends, Vash welcomes the way Milly's enthusiasm amplifies his own. He makes a happy hum to confirm his identity, nodding with delight and paying careful attention to his new friend's words.
There's enough familiarity in them to assume that Milly's from No Man's Land—the other-selves iteration of it, at least—and that she has some closeness more to Meryl than to Wolfwood. The older cross-bearer had mentioned a "big lady" in their first meeting last year, which is now completely corroborated as an apt descriptor.
…But there had never been a name mentioned. Vash is not one to forget faces and names, he knows as much; there's a passing thought given to Roberto, a name that the other Wolfwood had not been familiar with, as some bizarre exchange of fate.
"Well…!" The pacifist's head sheepishly sinks against his shoulders. His hand meekly pulls at the red cuff strapped around his prosthetic arm, moving the Project SEEDS arm patch fully in view. "Haven't found a way t'explain it myself, even now. But even then, I've come to learn some about our differences so far. What we share, too.
"But I don't think I've had the pleasure of meetin' you up 'til this moment. What might your name be, friend?" Dark eyebrows cautiously lift up behind orange lenses. "Oh—huh. That mean y'haven't met Vash here, yet?"
"Oh, right!" Milly's voice softened with a touch of disappointment. Since Meryl hadn't met her yet, it only made sense that this Vash hadn't either. However, she quickly composed herself, extending her hand. "Milly Thompson! I'm very glad to be able to make your acquaintance, Mister Vash."
She sheepishly shakes her head. Most of her time here thus far has been spent exploring her new surroundings, all of her meetings thus far happening only through pure coincidence. It’s quite the funny thing. "You mean the other Vash? Nope! I guess I just haven't seen him around, but I’m sure I will soon enough!”
A hand raises to scratch at her head, eyebrows pinching together just the slightest. “Gee, doesn’t it ever get confusing with two of you here? I’m starting to think so…Have you ever tried coming up with nicknames for one another? Like, um…” Her words trail off with a hum. Numbering them simply won’t do, and it has to be something that suits them both… “Thomas.”

Wolfwood ultimately decides letting the pozole reheat on the stovetop is the best option here. Gives him more time to set up the garnishes in their little ramekins. Vash isn't home right now, which is a damn shame—he's sure he'd be delighted to see the big girl here and share a meal.
"Huh?" He looks back at her, blinks, then follows her gaze to his hand, right to the ring on his finger.
She really has missed a lot. If she'd shown up just a little sooner she could have made it to the wedding, he really would have loved to have her there.
Maybe the little smile he gives is a little dopey and nauseatingly in love. A long time ago it would've been a little embarrassing, but they just got married—no point in embarrassment anymore.
"Yeah, well." He flexes his fingers. "You missed the wedding. A real damn shame, too."
..... The room settled in a brief silence as Milly was left to process his words. Sure, it was a passing thought, something she hadn't even expected to be correct, but now that it hung in the air, she couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement. "The wedding?? You got married???!!!! And you weren't even gonna tell me!" She shouted in a mix of disbelief and excitement, a hand playfully shaking his shoulder. "It must have been wonderful. I can't believe I missed something like that...! Tell me all about it!" Milly hadn't intended to pry or stumble upon such personal news, yet the words had just slipped out, propelled by a genuine curiosity. It's sweet, she thinks, hearing about the kind of lives Wolfwood and Vash lead outside of Gunsmoke.

The door is shut behind her and Wolfwood watches her for a few moments. With a snort and edge of exasperated fondness, he says, "Shoes off, big girl."
He follows after her. Kuroneko has leapt onto the arm of the sofa to watch them with her massive eyes as Wolfwood ventures into the kitchen. From the fridge he pulls out a few containers, one being full of some sort of red stew. The other, smaller containers have what appear to be garnishes.
"There's a lotta options for food here," he says. "So I started cookin' more... for me n'Vash." And the people they've grown close to here, too. He seems unaware that he's forgone his old nickname for Vash in front of her; his actual name comes so easily to him now. "Made pozole again, s'been a while."
One of the dishes made at the orphanage on rare occasions, when they could afford to have more ingredients sent to them. The spices were toned down a bit for their little mouths, and because there just weren't many available. The last time he made it was... well, nevermind that.
"Might be quicker in the microwave, but I can let it reheat on the stove. Might taste better that way."
He's pulling a toothpick out of the small box on the kitchen island before he's cracking open the lid of the container. "You just get here? To the city?"
After Milly sets aside her shoes, she heads towards the kitchen and cracks open the fridge, curious about its contents. Wolfwood is right in that there are a lot of food options, especially compared to that of Gunsmoke; if this is what their fridge looks like, she can only imagine how well-stocked the stores are here… It's like she can feel her mouth watering already. "I don't think I've ever tried this yet!" Milly's eyes track Wolfwood as he retrieves the container from the fridge and soon cracks it open. His new ring catches her attention, gaze lingering on it for a moment. Returning to the conversation, she nods enthusiastically. "Yeah! I just got here. I'm really glad to see Meryl, you, and Mister Vash here too. I don't know what I would do otherwise!" The thought of being in this unfamiliar place without her family or friends is a daunting thought she prefers not to dwell on right now. Her gaze drifts back to Wolfwood's ring once more, gesturing towards it with a pointed finger. Did he up and decide that he's a jewelry person now? Or, with that placement...! "I feel like there's something else I'm missing something here..."

A chorus of children sounds a loud 'AWWW' with some stray 'BOOO's mixed in there.
" Look I like treats too but we have to eat proper meal first! " Eiden determinedly instucts the group even with the continuing expressions of disappointment, " you eat desserts after main right? "
" But miss Milly promised... "
A new choir of complaints sounds. Eiden turns his head towards the acquired helper that the children accused now. She'd haphazardly offered help and with no one else with him to 20 children he wouldn't turn that down even if his life depended on it.
But what was this now....
" Did you now Miss Milly? "
Like a deer in headlights, she freezes.
"Ummm… Well," Milly would be lying if she said she hadn't already given them permission for desserts -- almost entirely influenced by her own craving for something sweet. "Miss Milly might've...!" Eyes flicking between Eiden and the group of now-disappointed children, a sheepish smile tugged at her lips as she tried to salvage the situation. "Maybe it would be better to wait until after dinner. You know, my big-big brother used to always tell us that dessert before dinner is one good way to get a tummy ache." Evidently, though, this never deterred her sweet tooth.
It's the kind of look Vash is more used to getting on his home planet; a hard stare, openly trying to evaluate whether his look matches the dead ringer Typhoon on that ever-present wanted poster.
Spirale's been different—for the most part. With his memories of this place suddenly turned erratic, it's hard to figure out himself what sort of trouble he'd caused this time around.
He waves up at Milly anyway. Sunlight filters through lost-tech fingers from behind him, briefly shining a turquoise spot on her before he laces his hands behind his back. Rocking on his heels, Vash's voice is nearly sing-song with its friendliness:
"Hey there, friend! ... You, uh, want a helping hand with anything?"
Recognition dawned in Milly's eyes as Vash spoke, his voice carrying a familiar cadence that quickly replaced any initial suspicion with joy. "Hallooo," Milly exclaimed, her enthusiasm bubbling over. An earnest wave punctuates her warm greeting, returning his in full. "I was hoping I'd get to meet you! You're Mister Vash, right?" It's almost unmistakable now! "Meryl told me I might run into either you or the other Mister Preacher..." Her words trail off, as her thoughts start to wander, a hand rising to her chin while she muses aloud. "I'm still not sure I get this whole multiple universes thing, but if I was able to tell it was you right away, you must not be that different after all."
When she draws away Wolfwood gives her arms a little pat... and realizes he has no idea what to do with his hands now, so he sticks them in the pockets of his sweatpants and wishes he had something between his teeth. The toothpicks aren't too far away.
"Uh," he grunts, then looks over his shoulder, then back at her. "This house? Probably a year, now. Been in the city just a little longer."
April... last year, right? Hard to believe it's already been that long. So much has happened.
"Not the kinda place you get thrown into when ya first get in. Spikey got it for us." Or something. Their move-in was a lot more chaotic and confusing than Vash had anticipated. Usually that sort of thing doesn't involve zombies and dying in your lover's arms only to wake up in a brand new house.
Wolfwood moves off to the side and moves one hand out of his pocket to wave her in. "C'mon in, if ya want. I got leftovers in the fridge if yer hungry."
"No kidding! It looks huge," Milly remarked absentmindedly, her mind briefly elsewhere until the conversation fully registered. A few seconds passed before her gaze darted back to Wolfwood, springing up in surprise. "Mister Vash? He's here too?" And living with Mister Wolfwood, it seems. Sounds like they've been getting along quite well. "Am I? I'm starving!" Her excitement barely contained, Milly hardly waits for that invitation before eagerly hurrying inside. "What d'ya have? I can't promise I wont eat it all." Her words carried an obvious jest, but the idea of devouring everything in sight was a very real possibility to her hungry stomach.
📷 "I'll take that "distinct clothing style" comment as a compliment!" Meryl smirked after attempting to parse Milly's hair description. She had even mirrored her gestures to try and get an idea of what she meant. She didn't really get it, but it was different, right? The other Meryl must've had an ego with Milly complimenting her like this, but this Meryl wasn't really used to it.
She was quickly back to blushing when Milly took her hands with both of her own.
"Of course I mean it! Do I seem like the kind of person that'd lie about that kind of thing?" Meryl kept the people who wanted to be around her close to her heart, and if Milly wanted to be part of her life then she was happy to accommodate her just like she had the others. She smiled. "I think I know what Wolfwood was saying now. We kind of click, huh?" Maybe she was just more used to them giving her trouble though.
"Yup, that's right! We go together like peanut butter and pickles!" Which, admittedly, isn't a lot to most people, but ... it made perfect sense to Milly, and that matters more than those outside opinions! Meryl would understand. ... She hopes. After a beat, Milly's mind starts to wander a bit more, head tilting slightly as she begins to speak again. "Gee Meryl, if you haven't met me before, have you just been working alone, then?" Has other-Milly been working alone too, she wonders? The uncertainty of this whole thing is only giving her a massive headache, and it shows in how a hand reaches to scratch at the back of her neck out of habit.

"May I see the sling?" Before he goes suggesting solutions, he at least wants to check out what she's even dealing with. "I want to see if the repairs I'm about to suggest would even be worth it before I send you on your way."
"I'm also not exactly an expert when it comes to fabrics, so take what I say as a suggestion rather than a fact."
The gun is just as heavy as it is large, prompting Milly to handle it cautiously as she brings it closer to him for inspection. Its sling shows signs of typical wear and tear in the form of frayed edges, but upon closer inspection, the real issue seems to lie with a faulty buckle.
"I'll take whatever I can get, Mister! Honest! I think anything is better than just leaving it like this..."
