REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE - Genesis Owusu (2026)

I might be biased because I usually prefer to listen to albums front to back, but this is a certified no-skip banger. Genesis is a Ghanaian-Australian artist, and this is his third album release.

Sound-wise, REDSTAR is primarily Alt-Rap/Rock, with punchy guitar, groovy bass, and drums. The sound is sometimes pounding, sometimes hazy, but always propulsive.

The first three tracks really get their hooks in you as the album opens with a declarative and concise rap track, followed by an anthemic rock stomper with a chugging rhythm, then it drops you into a funky groove with smoky vocals. Genesis boasts a fairly wide range vocally, hitting notes from smooth deep refrains, high wispy choruses, and a variety of rap flows throughout.

One of my favorite tracks on the album, LIFE GOES ON is a bit of an outlier sonically, with an anxious dance beat and thudding bass. I also love BIG DOG, which is straight ear candy for me with a housey beat, spacey synths, and a full soundscape.

Lyrically, the album focuses on heavy topics of class and politics. At first i was tempted to question why an Australian rapper would care so much about American politics, as he derides the likes of Elon Musk, Andrew Tate, and Trump. But of course I soon realized the obvious. These people do not gain power in isolation, and their actions have global impact. Genesis says it best on the bridge of the opening track, PIRATE RADIO: “Hate, greed, paranoia / The worldwide scourge”.

Inside the expressions of frustration and struggle, however, there is a strong message of hope in this album. In DEATH CULT ZOMBIE, a track that makes scorching criticism of conformity and close-mindedness sound like the most fun you’ve ever had, Genesis closes with the line “it’s not left and right, just up and down”. This serves to remind that our ire should always be turned to the rich and powerful, not one another. The next track, SITUATIONS follows this message with an honest olive branch to those he criticizes in DEATH CULT, saying “Ones up high just laugh when we suffer / So fuck we look like battling one another / Maybe we estranged but you still my brother” and “I can see your trials, see your situation / I can see your face”.

These themes reach an emotional conclusion on the final track ONE4ALL, a gospel-laced, cathartic outro that makes sure we know that we’re goin’ to be alright, dog.

REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE is a cohesive and potent work of art that packs an emotional punch, and I can’t stop listening to it.

I’m nervous to score my reviews, but I think this is a 10/10, I can’t think of anything to criticize. I’ve been recommending it to everyone I know.
