Hi! This is the step by step of what I do for each chapter:

1. Make flashcards of all the vocab words I don’t know. I just use Quizlet. Throughout the time I study the chapter, I go back and review these words every day until I’m really comfortable with them. 

2. Look at the kanji and practice writing them and doing the workbook pages for them. I revisit this often and use the new kanji whenever possible while writing.

3. Go through the grammar points slowly, making sure I understand everything. Personally, I take notes because it helps me learn better. Since Genki explains grammar pretty briefly in my opinion, I sometimes go out and seek additional information if needed, mostly using A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar.

4. Do all the exercises in the textbook that are doable. There are some exercises where you really need a partner or to be in a class, so I just skip those. I write my answers down and check them using the answer key. After I correct mistakes, I go through the questions again a second time, answering out loud. Sometimes I use the audio files to do the exercises.

5. After I finish the textbook exercises, I do the workbook pages. These I tend to do all of them before I check my answers because my knowledge of the grammar points is more concrete.

6. Sometimes I write a Lang-8 entry, focusing on using all the grammar points of the lesson I covered to make sure I really understand it.

7. For more practice, I use additional websites that I list here.
