Week One

March 12th, 2018:

My first week consisted of background research and reading several papers on AFM & STM along with observing how to do several processes on the LT SPM machines. Such tasks included;

How to collect liquid nitrogen and transport nitrogen through the building.

How to clean components used in UHV

How samples are moved into the SPM via the load lock.

How samples are moved into the prep chamber.

How the samples are degassed and subsequently cooled.

How samples were moved from the prep chamber into the SPM head.

How the samples are approached with the SPM tip both manually and automatically.

How to reshape the tip for better imaging of surfaces.

My name is Shannan and this blog is a personal blog that will allow me to recount my time on work placement. I am a third-year student at the Dublin Institute of Technology. Part of my academic year involves a six-month work placement which, in my case, is a placement abroad.
