'Cinema Futura' movie theater - Zhongshan, China (2014)
Designed by Alexander Wong
"Đased on futurism and inspired by classic sci-fi movies like Ridley Scott's Alien and James Cameron's Avatar, the design attempts to create the first sci-fi cinema in Zhongshan, China. The 36,800-square-foot interior is a complex composition of organic design elements that create original forms. These forms are custom made with fiberglass molds, bold colors, and dynamic lighting to produce a futuristic ambience.
At the entrance, one immediately arrives at the Plaza Pandora, a surrealistic biosphere with an organic ceiling supported by double-layered spiraling columns with an outer skin inspired by DNA strands called chromosome columns and the movie Alien. Here, one will also notice the white leaf-like patterns on the floor with matching metallic pendant lights swirling dynamically above. The plaza is encompassed by the sensual forms of the Pandora Box Office and Bar Pandora where moviegoers can buy tickets and popcorn to begin their unique journey into movie fantasy. Our inspiration here is nature itself. Nature is filled with the most complex geometrical shapes imaginable. In terms of this complexity and the sophistication of our universe in its entirety, sci-fi and futurism only reflect a tiny fraction. We are deeply inspired, or quite simply, in awe of nature. It is the source of all art forms, including architecture and spatial design."

âThe environment is animated by a metaphorical digital nervous system. Sculptural âneuronsâ float above workspaces and interweave through shared and public areas. These forms, lit internally by fiber optic filaments, provide continuity, fluidity, and a soft ambient glow in an otherwise dimmed environment. The result is an overlay and a pronounced juxtaposition: a twenty-first century process-oriented enterprise in a classic twentieth century corporate envelope.â

DâFly Store - 47 Greene St., Soho NYC (2002 - closed sometime before 2009)
âTucked away on an unpasteurized stretch of Greene Street, D'Fly traffics in state-of-the-art accessories, from Marc Newson Ike-Pod watches to laser-cut stainless-steel eye-glasses with logic-defying screwless hinges. But itâs the trickery of Niessing tension rings, gripping dainty gems in a superstrong clasp, that provides the best analogy for the SoHo boutique: Delicate objects are poised in a tenuous balance. Tubes of nylon mesh, like particularly elegant cobwebs, stretch taut from corner to corner. The tops of floating vitrines, anchored to floor and ceiling by tensile nylon cables, rise and lower via pneumatic technology borrowed from car manufacturing. The design suggests the perpetual tug-of-war between art and science.Â
D'Fly (meaning dragonfly) is the brainchild of Jeff Shi and Jennifer Lin, owners of three avant-garde stores in Taiwan. For Lin and Shiâs latest effort, their first U.S. out-post, they collaborated with maverick German firm 3deluxe, which engineered the 2,200-square-foot storefront into a futuristic gallery that marries hands-off austerity and interactive, touch-me-please product presentation. At rear, for instance, the try-on counter features three frameless mirrors that slide into and out of the tempered-glass surface, like car windows. For a truly interactive experience, try out the funky seating units; their cushions of heat- and pressure-reactive foam mold to the shape of the sitter. Counterbalancing the white lacquered surfaces and the industrial edge of the floating vitrines is the jungle allure of a terrarium behind mirrored glass panels at the back of the space. (Depending on viewing angle and lighting conditions, patrons see a bamboo forest reflected ad infinitum or a faint impression of their own visages superimposed over the foliage.) Further contrast is offered by the polyurethane-coated recycled-rubber flooringâendowed with a bit of give should fumble-fingered customers drop a piece of the merchandise.â âJen RenziÂ

âRibbons of translucent fiberglass are designed to transform the raw concrete space of a designer retail store. Supported by steel pipe frames, the ribbons appear to float between floor and ceiling â providing aesthetically pleasing light while also providing functional purposes for the commercial renovation. The ribbon panels are contoured to create two indentations. As the panels are repeated to generate the ribbon, these indentations generate two continuous grooves; a lower one for shoes and a larger upper one for boots, bags and other accessories. Rolling walls made out of the same panels are plugged into such grooves (like tracks). The rolling walls are used to break up the space on both floors, to create individual bags for each designer on the lower floor and two distinct exhibition areas on the ground floor. The ribbon glows with fluorescent flight produced by fluorescent tubes attached to the rear of each fiberglass panel. Different color gels can be installed around the fluorescent tubes to change the color of part or of the whole environment.â
