They define it as the “absence of resistance.” The space in a room is understood as the absence of anything that would prevent one moving around in it. To cross from one side of the room to the other is possible because nothing gets in your way. Rather than being the place where things happen, space is the absence of what prevents things from happening. The space in the room is nothing in itself; it is just the absence of chairs or tables, glass walls or hidden tripwires that would obstruct movement within it. In encountering no such resistance, we are able to move about freely." #StephenBatchelor #LivingwiththeDevil Absence of Resistance: g dgag rtsam gyi med dgag, or more literally: “the simple negation which is the mere cessation of obstructive contact.” This is the standard definition of “uncompounded space” (dus ma byas kyi nam mkha) in the Geluk school of Tibetan Buddhism. Such space is a negation and as such cannot be imagined as a thing of any kind. If a fence were put across a room, it would eliminate the lack of resistance at the point where it stands. But nothing would have to be removed to make way for it. Project Fabsternation

My brother and sister and I were born into an existence of comfort. Food and Water were a plentiful affordable human right. Shelter was cheap then, disposable income was high. Refuelling the car a nuisance instead of a luxury. Pleasure was a frequent excess. Life was a non-stop banquet.  Those things are long gone now. We now find ourselves way beyond the tipping point. The window of opportunity to reverse our consumption now closed.  Then with gathering pace the cult of plenty spread it's messengers, it's grip took hold. Conciousness was altered permenantly by the expectation of immediate gratification. The muscles of the body wasted as they ate themselves after the fat reserves disappeared. Finally the body capitulated. All that remained was sinew and bone. Even the marrow had been devoured. The wealthy sat in their gilded towers surrounded by the devastated world that they had created. They tossed out the last of the gnawed remains onto vast overflowing landfills and gazed out at the landscape with dispassionate eyes. The rivers dried and the soil crumbled. The carcass gave one last great sigh, slumped backwards and turned to dust.

and you nevertheless remain very present and continue to treat them with kindness and respect, you place yourself in a position of great power. You become a means for the situation to be graciously diffused and wisely healed. A Zen teacher once said, "When somebody backs themselves into a corner, look the other way until they get themselves out. And then act as though it never happened." Allowing people to save face in this way and not reminding them of what they already know is not their most intelligent behavior is an act of great kindness. This is possible when we realize that people behave in such ways because they are in a place of great suffering. People react to their own thoughts and feelings and their behavior often has nothing directly to do with us
