THE DARKLING'S EYES NARROW , JAW CLENCHING. "Is that not what the winter fete is for?" & such a display of power has always infuriated the Darkling. The Grisha were not objects to entertain and yet the Tsar had always insisted on it. Aleksander would not be party to extending it further - nor would he allow such a thing.

It had been a simple conversation, a simple discussion. In fact, he hadn't even thought much of his words. In the grand scheme of it all, Kaz Brekker had learned early on that some people held more worth than others. The Second Army could easily do without him, but it couldn't do without its leader. That was no opinion, it was a simple fact.

"I thought I already had your favor," he shrugged, though kept his gaze on the Darkling to study him closely, all too aware he was treading on thin ice. "And if I wanted your pity, I'd tell you some sob story from my past, or whatever it is others do to earn it."

Kaz stepped up to the table in the middle of the room, and let his gloved fingers trace the outlines of Ketterdam on one of the many maps scattered about. "All I'm saying is... A Barrel rat like me is like a dime a dozen in Ketterdam. Find someone desperate and ambitious enough, and I could teach them to be like me. They might not hold all the same qualities and talent, but they'd do in a pinch."

Turning his eyes back to the other, Kaz cocked his head to the side. "Now you, on the other hand.. You're one of a kind. You know it. I know it. So does every other Grisha out there."

KAZ BREKKER FASCINATES HIM IN ALMOST MORBID WAY - from the very moment they had met , Aleksander had recognized a darkness within him , one that he himself possessed. THERE WAS A CRUELTY TOO , beneath the surface and one that the other it seemed had never hesitated to hone. It was the mark of a survivor and something that the Darkling could respect. TO BE NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO BE BEATEN - to be one step ahead in everything you did. It was quite the skill , quite the ability and Aleksander had known that despite the amount of distrust between them in the beginning , it could be exploited by the right person.
