In anticipation of Perseverance landing safely on Mars today, I headed back in time with this mixed media piece I made in 2004 titled “Her Desher,” as "the red one" was known in ancient Egypt. I’ve made quite a bit of celestial-inspired art since my days of watching the shuttle launches and playing with my space LEGO. There’s very little indication that I’ll be growing out of this behavior. And I still have said LEGO in case I feel the urge to celebrate that way.

Mars made a more recent appearance in “The Conversation.” It was visible above a moon cast red by a climate fire in San Diego's East County. The crows are locals who had paid a visit to the back fence that afternoon while I watched the smoke billow.

Under better circumstances, I’d be headed downtown shortly to hang my paintings in the Comic-Con Art Show. Instead, I’ll be making more art and looking to see what my fellow artists are sharing here as we take part in @comicconathome. So far I’ve seen a few familiar faces as represented by their unique personal styles. I have work I’ve purchased at this show over the years displayed in my own studio and appreciate it every day.

Here’s the piece I finished yesterday. I’ve been keeping a vigil of sorts over Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) since it came into view. This mixed media painting was inspired by a trip out to the Laguna Mountains here in San Diego County to escape the nightly coastal fog that had been cloaking it for a week from my vantage point. It was worth getting up at 3AM for. If you haven’t seen the comet in person yet, today is the closest it’ll be to our lovely marble for roughly the next 6,800 years. Find a dark spot and look below Ursa Major. I’m still able to spot it without binoculars, but it’s fading.
