The Underrepresented
I’ve never felt especially “underrepresented” until college, but I believe my interest in fighting for the voiceless and pushing for equality stems from something I’ve watched my father do for years:
Growing up, the families in my neighborhood would often gather to share Sunday afternoon picnicking in the pleasant Chicago breeze. After each of these meals, the families had a tradition of playing tug-of-war. While most of the dads would immediately separate off into teams, picnic after picnic, I watched my dad wait until the game began before picking a team.
He knew that while one person may not change the outcome of the game, he could, at the very least, ease the burden of the team he chose. So while he lost every game of tug-of-war he played, he didn’t mind so much because at least he had made the teams a little more equal.
