my mom just started crying tonight because she has a child in her 2nd grade class that she suspects to be on the autistic spectrum (they don’t know because, until this year, his mother has been refusing to get it evaluated, choosing to pretend he’s neurotypical to make herself feel better) and this child wrote in his handed-in journal that, on a scale of one to ten, he thinks he’s a three or a four, that he hates himself and wishes he wasn’t different. she just kept saying “he’s such a sweet, bright young boy, and he’s being made to feel like his disability is a plague at home, and i have such a big class and i don’t have a special education degree and all i want to do is help him but i can’t give him all the help he needs” through tears.
my mom works for hours at home trying to grade the work done in class fairly, as well as write lesson plans and compile report cards, while dealing with shitty, entitled parents emailing her at all hours. my mom works non-stop. there is no vacation but summer vacation for her.
what i’m trying to say is, your teachers most likely care. your teachers are most likely underpaid (which, surprise, is probably why they seem to lack passion if they’re older!), have to meet work quotas, and most likely wish they could teach in a better way than what is school mandated.
so please stop treating your teachers like shit for no good goddamn reason.Â
