the song that makes it into a character mixtape is often not the one that says the emotion most plainly.

for a character who keeps showing up at someone’s door after a bad day, the useful question is not “what songs are about love?”

it is:

does the bassline feel like the drive over?

does the chorus arrive where they finally let the other person see them tired?

would the song still make sense after the scene is over?

that is how I start: one physical detail, one thing they cannot say, and the song that leaves room for both.

the whole thing can be a running joke until it is 1 a.m. and you are both quietly taking the long way home.

that was the brief for this 15-song hurt/comfort mixtape. every track had to earn its place by holding one piece of that scene: the panic, the vigil, the apology that lands harder because neither of them is ready to say the bigger thing yet.
