d'ya think the Darkwraiths were originally designed as like. Knights of Nito? cause i mean. they look like him, what with the skeleton armor and black shroud. and Nito's grab greatly resembles the Dark Hand Lifedrain. just without the kissy-kissy.

thought about this again. part of me wishes that instead of the. skeleton-y armor. the Darkwraiths instead wore. like. more basic plate armor. but heavily rusted with barnacles all over it. like the Murkmen.

alternatively. two armor sets.

New Londo Knight Set

basic plate armor. relatively pristine. design would take cues from the Dark Sword. which would be renamed to like. the New Londo Knight Sword. i guess. (looks like Vilhelm's Set from 3, maybe?)

worn by the few knights of New Londo who had not sunken along with their city.

Abyssal New Londo Knight Set

resembles the previously mentioned armor set, but... centuries of sitting at the bottom of flooded New Londo hasn't been kind to it.

heavily tarnished and rusted from water damage.

covered in barnacles and vegetative growth. (seaweed?)

perpetually damp, and thus resistant to Fire but weak to Lightning.

slightly warped from proximity to the Abyss.

i think interpretations that connect Melina and the GEQ don't take into account that the former is connected to bird imagery (considering the Death connection this could plausibly be the Deathbirds / their mother / the Outer God that sent her; two of those being missing from the narration) while the latter to serpent imagery (apostles stretching like snake-men, nobles having a tail, one being found in Temple of Eiglay; as well as obliquely the fact that if a divine serpent would shed their skin it would be god-skin, and we find two such exuviae in the game, in Bonny Village and again the Temple of Eiglay)

although... considering that Melina was a hidden child of Marika taught to move like a black knife and to act as a finger maiden (perhaps the same role in ancient times), the bird tattoo with three fingers that is seen as a symbol of bad omen may be a misdirection, to make people leave her alone

hard to say. what i can point out is that we see winged serpents in Temple of Eiglay, both in statues and in the way the exuvia is displayed. it evidently lacks true wings, so this sort of artifice is employed to achieve that effect

we can say that the imagery shown in this church is, at least by the time of the Shattering, contrary and blasphemous to the Erdtree

contrast the winged serpent in the DLC: "The winged serpent is the token creature of Messmer's military forces. It is a wise friend which keeps the base (邪, with the sense of "evil") serpent at bay and holds its power in check."

so a good question would be, why did Rykard (or his faction, to the same effect) wish to display the shed skin of the god-devouring serpent such that it would evoke the symbol of the winged snake?

furthermore, the god-devouring serpent hatched from one of three eggs. what laid them? and who used the serpent-hunter in the past to fight which snake?

fun fact, here "small" in "small country" is 小 Sho, the same as in 小ロンド Sho Rondo, translated in the official english version of dark souls 1 as "New Londo". from what i can understand from the dictionary, it had the sense of "smaller" or "lesser" londo, because it was this inferior kingdom of humans as opposed to the shining and glorious one of the gods, Anor Londo

in that sense, the kanji can be interpreted as meaning both a literal small country, but also a "lesser" one, hinting at its ancient relationship with a bigger one
