Ahem.
Following in everyone else's footsteps in breathing new life into old accs. I was reapplying for him anyway so . timing I'll be trying to set up shop here sometime soon :3c
Of Interpretation, Misinformation and Everything in Between || Dan Heng & Zhongli
Storytime at the Pearl Galley || @stoneharbor
While most of Teyvat’s nations have provided brand fresh and new sights that he has never experienced before, much about the atmosphere and architecture of Liyue reminds Dan Heng of the Xianzhou, and it fills him with a sensation difficult to describe. How fascinating, that two worlds that have never had any contact with each other, that were separated by a barrier for millennia, managed to develop similarly in such a fashion.
And though Liyue is not filled with long-life natives the way the Luofu is, its air is just as full of lasting memories and eons of history.
Curiosity and wonder lead Dan Heng through the bustling streets, past the many small and big shops, and into the port, where he hears a peculiar invitation: the Pearl Galley welcomes visitors from all nations to participate or spectate in a storytelling contest, held in advance of the upcoming Lantern Rite celebrations.
It would feel remiss of him to give up on such an event, and so, part of the Mora he made recently on a commission here and there is forfeited in exchange for permission to get on board.
Here, people sit in circles around small tables, sharing snacks and tea as they listen to stories and discuss their merits. Quietly, he passes by a few groups, until an older man spots him looking for a place for himself, and with a cheerful smile, waves his hand towards him in invitation. Grateful, Dan Heng approaches and takes a seat, completing now a circle of five: the one who invited him, a younger guy wearing glasses, a middle-aged lady holding a fan, and a man with a long ponytail and striking eyes.
“Come here, young man! You’re just in time.” The first man gestures towards the tea on the table, inviting him to help himself, and with a light smile, Dan Heng nods in thanks. The attention then turns towards the woman. “Now, my good lady, you were just about to begin the tale of the fateful meeting between Rex Lapis and the great dragon? Looks like we’re all ready now.”
There's nothing quite like the art of storytelling. The chance to breathe new life into ancient tales, each storyteller putting their own twist on the history of the land, making it their own with each retelling. How familiar tales come anew with the simple changing of words, a sprinkle of imagination, captivates him endlessly. Though the embellishments of some tales are undeniable—perhaps to a degree of ridiculous disregard for historical fact—Zhongli finds value in viewing the world through another’s eyes, unfamiliar as that world may be.
And so the ex-Archon finds himself at the heart of this new storytelling competition.
Zhongli’s head inclines as the fifth seat is filled, casting a cursory glance to the unfamiliar face. A porcelain cup warms his hands as the others exchange greetings, wisps of steam rising from its surface into the chilly air. Softly, he blows a puff across its surface, a gentle ripple, the delicate, earthy aroma rising to curl in his lungs.
The woman holds a folding fan against her chest—a delicate thing, its pale blue panel is hand-painted, white cranes soaring across it, their wings outstretched, cutting through wispy clouds. Her other hand hovers steadily, fingers splayed, curling as she sets the scene…
“Long ago… when the harbor was young still, the Lord of Geo wandered the vast lands of Liyue. One fateful day, he heard a voice, a bellow deep within the bowels of the earth—shaking the foundations of mountains themselves. He searched the lands for the source of this thundering voice, from lofty peaks of Jueyun Karst, to the watery lowlands of Lisha, until finally, he found the strange rock spirit, buried deep within the earth...”
A faint smile tugs at the corner of Zhongli’s lips as he takes another sip of tea. The woman was certainly imaginative.
“The spirit called to him, a blind creature of stone, with no eyes to witness the world. It cried out, not in sorrow, but in longing—longing to see the sun and clouds, to gaze upon the lands above ground. Rex Lapis took pity on the creature and carved him from the earth. With his hands, he forged a magnificent vessel, a glorious body forged of basalt and cor lapis, holding the beauty of the very mountains it was forged from. And with a final touch, he took the finest jade, shaping two eyes for the creature to behold the world in all its splendor.”
“And with that final touch, the dragon spread its wings and soared into the heavens, eyes drinking in the sunlight for the first time.”
The fan snaps closed with a flick, and she presses it gently against her open palm, eyes shutting.
“There is a saying to commemorate this fateful meeting, the beginning of this perfect union: Paint the dragon; dot the eyes. For in that moment, a mighty bond was forged—the foundation upon which the land's peace and prosperity would rest.”
A hush falls over the table, the murmur of contestants at surrounding tables filling the space.
“I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.” Bashfully, she smiles, laying the fan atop the sandalwood table with a bow of her head. “Exchanging interpretations makes storytelling richer, after all.”
Zhongli is the first to break the silence, a hand coming to cradle his chin in contemplation. "A beautiful retelling, Miss Zheng," he muses. "Your words paint a picture so vivid, that for a moment it was as if we, too, had borne witness to that fateful meeting. It is a rare gift indeed to be able to breathe new vitality into familiar tales... With that said, I believe the perspective of one not native to the harbor could offer invaluable insight."
He casts a look to the unfamiliar man across the table, head tilting in friendly invitation. "Would you care to share your thoughts, sir?"

LANTERN RITEEEEEE !
with the lantern rite’s approach, zhongli’s busier than ever, traveling in and out of the harbor on a near daily basis for his work… though, he doesn’t look to be much of a fighter. even with his vision, surely there should be some concern about the millelith’s notices?
this can go a bunch of ways so i'm happy to play around with ideas!
could be fun to have someone think they're helping a god stay safe lol. zhongli’s also very willing to accompany people to ensure their safety or to help them wherever they need! he’s also very robbable-looking so we could throw some treasure hoarders at ‘em.
(also once again: this is open to multiple people! zhongli does not leave liyue i'm happy to just have him camp out)
MISCELLANEOUS
zhongli is available for non-board plotting as well ! must be liyue-only, since i can't rly justify taking him from there with the rite coming up… down for anything but i have some misc ideas if it helps or looks interesting to people :D
for unacquainted muses : oh, mora… — lantern rite preparations are underway. in the sea of people downtown, a tall man stands out among the crowd.. though it seems he’s in a bit of a predicament. from distant shores — not from liyue? no problem! wangsheng funeral parlor’s consultant is the perfect guide. whether you’re looking for insight on local customs, a guide to the lay of the land, or.. well, anything, really—zhongli is sure to be an excellent resource.
for old friends : homecoming of hearts — lantern rite is a time for reunion, a time to share food, tea, and stories with kith and kin. though zhongli is busy, he’ll always make time for the return of familiar faces. why not join him for a meal, a trip to the opera, or in his ambling around the markets? girl’s trip.
other : hustle and bustle — at this time of year, zhongli’s busier than ever running errands for wangsheng. there’s kites to be collected, flowers to be picked up, guests to greet—he’d surely appreciate being lent a hand.
feel free to reach out to me if you're interested in plotting anything :) i respond to discord fastest, both pings and dms are welcome! (dms preferred since mobile notifs are spotty)
also if formatting is weird i apologize i’m on my phone
New Beginnings…
Yet another year draws to a close.
Time flows like a river, the streams of the world winding and weaving through the land. Whether in the rushing of rapids, or the trickle of a meandering brook, they continue their journey, endlessly cycling, ever renewing.
I recently found myself with spare time, so I took a brief respite to visit the countryside villages of Chenyu Vale. At this time of year, the mountain peaks are dusted with snow, and the lakes freeze over as the first brush of winter reaches across the land. There are few things more serene than the sight of the moon’s reflection upon a frozen lake, the soft illumination of its pale light. It’s in these moments that one can savor the warmth of a fine cup of tea and reminisce about old times.
There is an old saying in Liyue: 海上生明月,天涯共此时. “Over the sea, the bright moon rises; though we are far apart, we share the same sky.”
Reuniting with distant friends is always a joyous occasion.
If time permits, I would like to gather for drinks once more. Much has happened in the years since our last meeting, and there are many stories I wish to share with you. I am sure you, too, have many tales to recount.
I’ve enclosed two bottles of baijiu for your enjoyment. I recall you once mentioning the tradition of drinking Fire-Water to stave off the chill of Snezhnaya while waiting for the first catch. Perhaps these bottles will offer warmth of a different kind—one which rekindles memories of times past.
I look forward to raising a glass together once more, should the opportunity present itself.

As the Seasons Change…
Another year has gone by.
With the turn of the seasons comes occasion to reflect on times past, and to look to the future. As is customary, it is time to prepare gifts and pen letters to distant friends.
Much has happened in the past year, I imagine you have many stories to tell. One as well-traveled as you has no doubt explored many new paths and forged new connections along the way.
Recently, I had the pleasure of journeying to Qingce Village. The village remains tranquil as ever, filled with the melodious sounds of villagers’ laughter and the quiet rush of nearby streams. The soothing beauty of the countryside is best enjoyed with a pot of tea and the richness of good food. Such delights are best shared with another.
As such, I’ve gathered a few nascent bamboo shoots from the outskirts of the village, hoping they may find their way into your capable hands. I trust you’ve experienced many culinary delights in your travels and honed your skills. I have no doubt your skills will transform these humble shoots into something exquisite.
Should you find yourself in Liyue once more, I hope we can meet up.
Fine tea in the company of good friends and good food is sure to lift one’s spirits.
Until then, may the year to come be joyous as the last, wherever your journey may take you.

◈ | 观沧海 – beholding the azure sea
for @jxrmngxndr
The midday sun blazes high above the nation of contracts, the ever-moving land bathed in its unrelenting glow. Beneath it, the tranquil sea mirrors the endless azure of a cloudless sky, a perfect reflection of the heavens, disrupted only by the scattered ships dotting its surface.
The Pearl Galley bobs atop those calm waves, far from the bustling docks of the harbor.
Today, however, the galley is anything but tranquil.
Its decks are cluttered, extra tables hastily set up to accommodate the surge in daytime guests, attendants weaving in and out of the overcrowded decks. Laughter and chatter fill the air, drowning out the sloshing of waves, patrons both old and new mingling among the decks.
It is, for lack of a better term, chaotic—a stark contrast to the usual environment of the ship, famed for its… well, less-than-legal events. By day, the decks were sparsely populated—only small gatherings of artists and scholars filling the seats of those cedarwood tables. But soon as the sun dips below the horizon, the ship truly comes alive—transforming into a truly luxurious venue, accessible only to those specially invited by other patrons or the workers themselves.
Now, there is a different reason to gather: a storytelling contest.
It piqued Zhongli’s interest the moment he caught wind of it—drawing him in with the promise of good stories and fine tea, like a fish to a hook. Truthfully, the consultant planned to stay a viewer to the spectacle, an observer, nothing more. That was until the encouragement (or, more accurately, insistence) of a few companions wore down his resolve—historians, scholars, and one particularly determined Iron Tongue Tian, whose persuasive methods were more effective than the consultant would readily admit.
And so here he stands, atop that golden stage, an eager crowd encircling its base. Gloved fingers glide over the ridges of his folding fan as he surveys the crowd before him, that sea of familiar and foreign faces.
Despite being unprepared, he has a wealth of tales to recount. So many, in fact, that it’s challenging to settle on one—
Amber eyes flick to the horizon—to the jut of distant stone peaks rising from the sea, remnants of a bygone age… And the perfect starting point.
With a hum, Zhongli's wrist twists, the fan snapping open with a crisp motion. His rich voice carries easily over the crowd, drawing the attention of those eager for the next tale.
"We begin in ancient Liyue… An age of turmoil, where the seas were home to wicked gods and beasts alike…" Fingers curl, rolling fan in an imitation of the rise and fall of the waves. "From the depths of those murky waters, a great serpent rose."

magic: ★★★★★ [ magic objectively exists in teyvat, even if there's occasionally skeptics. ]

friends: ★★★★★ [ he loves his friends, even if he's not the best at showing it. he cherishes every one of them deeply. ]

fame ☆☆☆☆☆ [ after being the subject of adoration and worship for thousands of years, he wants nothing more than an ordinary life. ]
wealth ☆☆☆☆☆ [ zhongli may have accidentally invented capitalism, but he's not super interested in participating. ]
others' opinions ★★★☆☆ [ he greatly values the contributions and insight of other people, hence the stars. BUT he doesn't care about opinions regarding him at all. ]
hc + 💔 for a headcanon about a sad experience
In his long life, Zhongli has borne witness to centuries of strife. Countless battles, plague and famine ravaging the land, monsters spilling forth into every corner of Liyue.
He remembers the suffering of the people during the Archon War—the suffering of his people. The grief was insurmountable.
Zhongli felt the pain of their loss as if it were his own. He, too, had loved and lost—companions swept away by the same tides. Guizhong had been the first to fall, reduced to nothing but dust on the breeze. Such losses never became easier, each weighing heavily upon the god.
Perhaps it was that sorrow which compelled him to seek celestial order.
◈ | 定风波 – melody of a tranquil storm
for @vatesaeterni
As winter arrives, Wangsheng Funeral Parlor finds itself busier than ever. Services are fully booked for weeks, with demand increasing as the Lantern Rite approaches. Zhongli feels the burden of it, weary as he steps into the foyer of his apartment.
Shoes slip off with a sigh, fingers working at the clasps of his coat. It slips from his shoulders with a shrug, and he hangs it on the nearby stand, taking a moment to smooth the wrinkles.
It's quiet, naught but the soft padding of his footsteps across hardwood floors filling the room. The silence provides a welcome respite after a long day, from the endless chatter of clients circling through the parlor’s doors. Though Zhongli prides himself upon his work, even he requires a break now and again.
Falling into his usual rituals is easy. He brews the tea with attentive care, never letting it steep a second longer, lest the delicate flavor turn bitter. Ceramics are neatly arranged on a tray in his hands, book tucked under the crook of his arm—the fifth volume of A Legend of Sword, fresh from the Inazuman presses.
Zhongli steps onto the balcony, setting the tea tray upon the table with a light clink. Wisps of steam rise from the cup in delicate spirals, floral aroma carried on the breeze.
Few things are more relaxing than the chance to enjoy fine tea beneath the stars, a novel in hand— ... and a green-clad bard perched precariously on the banister.
Zhongli's eyes widen.
"... Barbatos."

ABOARD THE PEARL GALLEY ;
zhongli is a regular at the pearl galley and frequenter of liyue's many storytellers. like a moth to a flame, he's bound to attend— though whether he'd attend as a participant, a source of knowledge for others, or as a mere observer remains to be seen.
i have . a decent amount of ideas for this for any type of muse. open to pretty much anything! (edit note: this is open to multiple people! i don't mind letting zhongli live there for a while lol)
MISCELLANEOUS
zhongli is available for non-board plotting as well ! my only caveat is that i'd prefer to keep him in liyue, as he's not very travel-prone he's always available to be a listener, tour-guide, an encyclopedia about anything and everything, or anything else you may be interested in. shenanigans welcome!

hc + 🐈 for a pet/animal-themed headcanon
[ for this ask meme ]
The origins of many of Liyue’s customs are the subject of much debate. Conflicting tales, oral tradition, and records lost to time make the path to the truth of Liyue’s traditions a difficult one. One such custom is the curious hobby of ‘bird walking.’ In the early hours of dawn, the gentle chirps of songbirds drift through the air as retirees gather along worn dirt paths, the handles of bamboo cages hanging from their hands. While many believe this practice was started by Liyue’s elites—noblemen wishing to flaunt their prized songbirds—its true origins are far more humble. In the harbor's early days, a strange young man was often seen wandering with a cage in hand, the melody of a hermit thrush following him. He was a far cry from the haughty nobles thought to be responsible for this tradition, a lanky young man in loose-fitting brown clothes, indistinguishable from any other commoner if not for his golden eyes. His thrush was just as plain, its feathers a simple brown and white, with black flecks dotting its chest—nothing like the brightly colored exotic birds kept by those in Yujing Terrace. Birdkeeping was common at this time, but no one had thought to bring their pets outdoors, much less stroll with them. Yet, there was something undeniably captivating about how the man's bird seemed to sing so sweetly in the soft light of the rising sun, that sonorous melody drifting on the wind as the harbor stirred to life...
hc + ⏳ for a time-themed headcanon
[ for this ask meme ] Time is a commodity Zhongli is seldom short of. He’s witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations—countless wars and strife, the fall of mortals and gods alike. Though millennia have passed, Zhongli remains, a steady presence as empires rise and crumble around him, countless lifetimes passing before his eyes. In the aftermath of it all, when what once was fades to silence, he stands tall, an eternal witness of this world. Having witnessed so much—the joys of life, triumphs and tragedies alike—has left him terribly sentimental. While he couldn't be described as mournful, each era, each life that has intersected with his, no matter how fleeting, has left an indelible mark upon him, etched into his heart. To remember is not merely a choice: it is a sacred duty. His memories are more than mere recollection; they are a record of all things, glimmering fragments of Teyvat's long history, each one to be treasured. Imparting his knowledge to others, sharing tales of bygone days, is a way for him to cherish those long gone—for him to ensure their memory lives on.

what makes a good sword?
w/ @stoneharbor
Liyue reminds Yanqing of the Luofu. From the architecture, to the welcoming aura that it has, to the food - it's like a home away from home. Of course, the residents of Liyue do not suffer from mara, and their lifespans are that of a short-life species, but the reminiscences in culture have Yanqing relaxed as he scours the paths in the city, skipping leisurely along, the breeze ruffling his hair.
He fits right in, even with his clothes - and he truly does feel safe here, in this place that reminds him so much of home. It's almost a little eerie, but the lieutenant won't complain. Why should he? However, after tasting Liyue's food and climbing its mountains to witness the sunrise, buying a few flowers and taking photos of them for the General - there's a few more things to do, but the main thing that Yanqing wants to do is...
Buy a sword, of course!
Yanqing makes is way over to the blacksmith's, buzzing with energy and excitement. Every place he's been to - every different planet has access to different resources and materials. This gives birth to many different kinds of swordsmanship and fighting styles, as well as different kinds of swords in general. Some of them are even tailored to unique fighting styles that reflect in the materials itself!
Yanqing finally arrives, and asks to see the different kinds of swords that the blacksmith - who introduces himself as Master Zhang - has on display.
Ah. And here comes the difficult part. Trying to find out if he's being scammed or not.
The thing is, after the first few times he's been ripped off after visiting a new place, the lieutenant has learned to be cautious. He picks a sword up off of a shelf and swings it a few times to get a feel of it, and frowns, looking it over. He can't quite tell which one is the best quality, even after trying out a few different swords for a few different times.
At least Master Zhang doesn't seem to mind his sword wielding in the middle of the daytime, even if a few other customers look at him curiously. And even so, Yanqing is still at a loss, humming to himself as he looks between two swords. Which one to get? Which one is better? Maybe one isn't meant for battle, but is still rare? If only there were an expert around to help him...

Errands were always a welcome respite in his day, an excuse for him to amble through Liyue's bustling streets, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. The trip to Hanfeng's Ironmongers was meant to be brief—a straightforward task to complete before he could enjoy a hearty meal at Third-Round Knockout. And, perhaps, he’d have enough time remaining to stay for Iron Tongue Tian’s performance. Yet.. as he prepared to leave, something caught his eye. Or, rather, someone. Unfamiliar faces were commonplace in Liyue Harbor—tourists meandering between vendors in Feiyun Slope, deckhands ambling through the crowds after a long journey at sea—but this was different. Intrigue filled him as he watched the young swordsman pick up another sword, swinging it with practiced ease, hands swift as he selected one sword after the other. The fluidity of his movements, the precision with which he cut through the air, spoke of someone well-versed in the art. His skill was unmistakable, but his unfamiliarity with the weapons before him was… evident. Curiosity gets the better of Zhongli, urging him to step closer, his own purchase tucked safely away in its gilded scabbard. "Forgive my intrusion," he begins, gaze turned to the swords before them, appraising, "Are you seeking a particular sort of weapon? I couldn't help but notice you linger between these two..."

As his life has been quite lengthy, Zhongli has had ample time to master a vast array of instruments.
Through the years, many have passed through his hands—luxurious reeded instruments imported from Fontaine, hand-whittled woodwinds from Qingce, even a rather unique lyre, upon a certain visiting bard’s request. Yet, his favorite remains the erhu: an ancient instrument, one with a history nearly as long as his own.
Beside his wardrobe rests an ornate case, carefully protecting his erhu from the elements. This particular one has been with him for decades now, a treasured purchased from a skilled luthier during a Lantern Rite many moons ago. Its body is carved from fine sandalwood, featuring a uniquely geometric head, shaped into an elegant cubic hook. The hexagonal soundbox is still adorned with its original python skin, the brown and gold scales complementing the reddish wood. Even now it retains its glossy shine, a testament to the care taken in preserving it.
