Narrator voice: Charles was not, in fact, a good boy forever.

The 15 minute gun fight broke out between Charles and at least two other men following an argument at a hotel coffee shop in Louisville where Charles, a bookie, was staying for the Kentucky Derby. It was soon joined by responding police officers.

Charles' photo and fingerprints were sent out to surrounding law enforcement and it was discovered Charles was wanted for a bank robbery in Detroit and a hotel hold-up in Cleveland where one person was killed.

Charles died from his wounds several days later, but refused to identify the other men involved in the argument, who fled in the aftermath - though several articles mention they were thought to be "Chicago men", suggesting mob affiliation.
