after mentioning my quest to find non-whitening deodorant in the philippines, i got a couple replies of βwhitening deodorant?? from dove?? so i snapped a few pics at the supermarket today of whitening products from brands that should be familiar to americans. this is obvs not an exhaustive list of intl brands that make skin whitening products. not even of whatβs in my local supermarket, since i quickly got shy about snapping pictures of products in a busy aisle.Β
Iβm staring at this in horror because WHAT.
Whitening deodorant, because your armpits are not pale enough? Jesus Fucking Christ.
how can anyone feel okay about their body when even the fucking armpits have to conform to ridiculous, white supremacy-based beauty standards of nonsense??
OK, I just want to point out most lightening/whitening skin products arenβt meant to literally lighten your skin. TheirΒ purpose is to brighten you skin, if you have dull skin, remove dark spots caused by acne and sun exposure, and to even out your skin tone. This gives you a more overall healthy skin look.Β That isnβt a bad thing
I canβt really say anything about the deodorant since Iβve never seen that sort of thing before, thought Iβd think that itβs mainly just supposed to even out your skin tone, since places like your armpits tend to be a few shades darker than your natural skin tone. I can see why someone wouldnβt want to use that but I donβt think itβs a totally horrible product,
I understand thatΒ white skin as aΒ beauty standard is a terrible thing that affects many countries. But I also think that people shouldnβt assume that a product is white-washing a countryΒ just because it says lightening/whitening on the label. I do know that there are some products like that out there meant to lighten your skin, but theyβre not as common as the products Iβm talking about or shown in some of these pictures.
NOTE: I do acknowledge that the Jergens and Vaseline lotions in these picturesΒ are completely gross and need to not exist!.
Skin lightening/whitening could also be used for those oddly tinged skin colors-like mine. Im kind of a natural sickly greenish tinted (it sounds weirder describing it,but it's pretty common) And I'd think whitening would give me a more natura/healthier skin tone. Whitening OR tanning would, those would just be two options I have, neither better than the other.
