Intelsat 1 was built for the Communications Satellite Corporation and operated in cooperation with Intelsat. It entered service on June 28, 1965 and provided the first live coverage of a spacecraft splashdown, that of Gemini 6A, in December. Early Bird's most significant contribution was to the 1967 TV special Our World, the first live multinational and multi-satellite broadcast.
