..I think I figured out why you seem so familiar Marlen.. dya remember encountering anyone frequently sneaking into the graveyard at your nighttime shifts?
Sure, I do. Not too uncommon. Kids like you thinkinā itās a fun place to romp around, hallowed ground and all that bullshit. Maybe a couple grave robbers.
I qualified as the latter ā sorry, but uh. To be fair, the dead wouldnāt be using those things. Dead aināt using jewelry or fancy cakes or anything like that. Dead aināt using their teeth either.
[The reason they could get Marlen to look the other way so quickly was the fact that he, too, was somewhat guilty of grave robbing, in the form of taking the deadās teeth.
Got scolded once for sneaking into a mausoleum, left with a little less money in their pocket and an agreement that they wonāt snitch if he doesnāt.]
[He huffs a laugh.]
Well, fuck me. Guess thatās it, then. I canāt fault you, if only cause folks donāt usually take kindly to hypocrisyā¦
I donāt fault you either. Cause that would be just as hypocritical.
[They laugh, placing a hand on Marlens shoulder and smiling. Theyāve been eating better lately, not in terms of quality but in terms of quantity. Most older folks in the house have been absolutely stuffing their face full of food (Marlen included).
āOh youāre too thin, eat thisā āNo, you need to eat moreā, etc, etc. At a certain point Lasha learned to stop fighting it and save fluids for after meal time.]
Whatād you do it for? Money, thrills, supplies? I never was bright enough to think of selling the stuff I nabbed.
Well at first I noticed some people left food items for departed loved ones. I was in between jobs and needed to tighten my belt so Iād first just nab those and eat them right there like a wild animal hidden behind the very grave.
[They shrugged.]
Then? Well.. Iād needed money for school, and my paycheck wasnāt coming in fast enough so Iād nabbed a few things to pawn off. Then it eventually spiraled into me taking the items home, and then I got caught by you and that nearly scared me straight. Yāknow I didnāt know you stole the teeth before then, I was bluffing and trying to intimidate you.
Well, damn, guess it worked. Try out for theater after all this shitās done. Old food sounds nasty, though.
Youād be surprised what people are willing to do when hungry.. I figured youād know though since you grew up in the Soviet Union.
[They shrugged, a broke college student is still a broke college student whether or not their foreign exchange.]
Besides, growing up I ate weirder. Roadkill, roast, peanut better and salami sandwiches, lotsa cornbread.
Cornbread doesnāt seem quite right for that list, kid.
(He ruffles their hair a little.)

..so when I was a kid I was an acolyte at my church. Small Catholic Church in Texas, altar girl, me. That was me.
Until they kicked me out for being a fag, that is.
(He sighs.)
Theyāll do that. For a lot less than beinā a fag, even.
Yeah.. they do that for less. It hurt, though, Iād been apart of the church since I was a kid, Iād been baptized there.
And then suddenly they.. donāt want me.
Actually.. when I was living in the monastery there was a seminarian I was.. more than a little sacrilegious with.. heād called me his last temptation hehe..
Then he.. burned.
ā¦I see. Weāre all sinners, aināt we.
I suppose.. he was a nice man, broke one of his oaths because of me ā said it didnāt matter though, that heād ādo it again if it meant an hour longer in my armsā.. a romantic.
..I miss him.
Mmm. Yāall must think Iām some sorta skank.
Not really, kid. Just not the typa culture around here, I reckon.
I know, and Iāve gotten used to it. But still ā people assume Iām some skank, Iām not even that ā Iām not.. I havenāt even ā ugh.
Thatās ā itās hard to explain. Pisses me off more that I canāt understand. I see the ways people look at me man, youāre one of the few that look at me like an actual person worthy of respect.
Iām real sorry to hear that, kid. Youāre clever, you deserve to be listened to, I think.
You think? What does that mean?
It means Iām not usually too certain when I speak, kid. No need to be snappy.
(His tone is, regrettably, a bit harsher than before.)
..sorry.
I wasnāt this quick to anger before. All this anger was once love.
You say that a lot.
..Marlen I.. donāt like.. *anything* about me.
ā¦I know, kid. Aināt much I can do to change it.
(He places a hand on their shoulder, in some semblance of a comforting gesture.)
..yer like my dad ā you remind me of him ā I miss him ā
(He mutters.)
See one old man in the house and everyone thinks Iām a father figure.
ā¦
I think heād be proud of you, if it counts for much. Youāre doinā well in all this.

[Lasha knocks on the door to the office for once, instead of barging in like they usually do. Marlen can tell itās Lasha because of the rhythm of the knock. āShave and a haircut, two bitsā.
They open the door anyways, sitting down beside him.]
..I feel like everything recently has just been one big mass insanity episode. Yāknow while I was getting water last night FEMA came to the door. Homeowner didnāt tell them I was there ā argued with them.
But.. I was so close to being taken. And Iām afraid of what happens if I do so..
Marlen. I donāt think weāre going to survive this. Not as we are. Even if our bodies survive we will emerge forever and irreversibly changed.
ā¦I donāt reckon we will either, kid. Youāre startinā to convince me of it.
(He laughs weakly.)
Makes me wonder if we should just make the most of it all. Hedonism, or whatever itās called, yāknow?
