the chalcogen situation is crazy because the thing is 'chalcos' can mean 'copper' (which is what I am familiar with) but apparently it can also just mean 'ore' in general because apparently to the ancient greeks, most of the ores were copper ores anyway and so chalcogen just means 'ore-former', so when you get geological terms in relation to sulphur using 'chalcos' like 'chalcophile for example, you just have to imagine that in-universe Sulphur just like, lost a bet or something a really long time ago

also do you like these modern designs for Copper and Sulphur

i… actually didn’t. however i quickly realised that copper is such an important element that i should probably just come up with one

which is what i did

copper (she/her)

copper is one of the 4 (?) gorgeous group 11s, the others being silver, gold and roentgenium. so i obviously had to make her a beautiful woman…

what partially inspired the idea of copper being a woman though, is the etymology of the name (etymologies play a biiig part in character designing/oc making for me when it comes to the elements - whenever the name for an element originates from a masculine word, i translate that into my characters by making those characters male). so i found out that the symbol for copper, Cu, comes from the latin word cuprum (this is also what copper itself is named after), and going further back, from the word cyprium, both of which are neuter words. since, unfortunately, none of the elements in the periodic table originate from feminine words (in literally any language, no matter how far back you date the naming to) i usually just take whichever elements come from neuter words and simply pretend that they are feminine words for the sole purpose of translating that into female characters, because, what is this world without women? unless i get a vibe for the character to be non-binary, genderfluid etc. which is usually influenced by other properties of the element

however, i found out that by going even further back, copper used to be referred to in ancient greece by the greek name chalkos. this is a masculine word. thus, i got the genius idea to make my character of copper a trans girl. very smart, i’m aware

setting allat aside, i think she’d be a big nerd. really really nerdy. she keeps weird tools in those pouches on her belt.

the green accents in her hair and her greenish eyes are influenced by the flame test colours of Cu2+ and Cu3+ ions, as well as the appearance of copper ore. cool!
