A Helping Hand
desert-bluffs-and-me:
Kevin shook his head. He just couldn’t process what he was being told right now. “I’m really trying to understand you, buddy, but it just seems so illogical to me.” He kept his eye out for more dangers, unsure why he was protective of Steve. This was beyond wanting to redeem himself, this was feeling he must follow and protect Steve because of the authority the other had shown. Kevin was looking for someone to follow. He was lost.
“Being able to walk is one of the most fundamental skills we have. Things are so much easier when you can walk. If, painful, for some…” He clamped a hand over a loose part of his brace, trying to push the rod back into place as the whole thing loosened around his leg. “Why is it that she can’t walk? A condition from birth must have been painful, taxing, expensive…life would have been easier for all if she could walk. Now we can’t change the past, yet, but we could have made the future easier. I just…I’m not trying to start a fight, I just really don’t understand.” he was grunting with effort now, paying most of his attention to his legs.
Steve Carlsberg exhaled in a short gust between his lips. He put a hand on Kevin’s upper back to help steady him, almost instinctive, and found himself without any tension left at all except for the fear that drove him to find his daughter, the adrenaline and fire in his blood.
“It’s called spina bifida,” Steve answered solemnly, his voice focused, his eyes searching. “And it was all three of those things. But Janice is real tough, an’ she lives a full life. She does ballet, and softball, an’ she’s into engineering… She’s just, she’s just all around a really amazin’ person. She doesn’t let not bein’ able to walk stop her.”
He reached a building that seemed to be of particular interest to him, but he stopped and looked at Kevin first. He noticed the broken brace, and frowned.
“Kevin… If you really think that not bein’ able to walk makes ya broken, then what does that mean for you?”
He leaned down to look at the brace and see if he could do something to fix it.
Kevin was taken with the strange need to knock Steve over, even though he was being genuinely nice and showing interest in Kevin’s problems. Maybe it was because he was so genuinely nice.
“I guess it means I’m broken.” Kevin admitted freely. He couldn’t walk without aid any more, that meant something was wrong with him, he wasn’t a whole person. Even with these thoughts in his head, his face kept on smiling.
He concentrated instead on all the things that Janice was doing. It surely was admirable, she was making something of herself. Maybe walking wasn’t entirely important after all…
“I’m sure it’ll hold. Let’s go find your family, you don’t have to worry about me. Even though it technically is your fault that it’s lose, given that it is so because I saved you.” Kevin reflected in an even happy tone.
“Are you sure? Seems to me it’d gain us more time than it’d cost,” Steve assessed, his large hands already on one of the braces. He was clearly trying to put it back together, at least as well as he could. His natural strength contributed greatly to this, even though his lack of tools did him no favours.
He sighed, working as quickly as he could, brows furrowed and eyes focused. “You aren’t broken, you know. You just have a handicap. There’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t know how t’ convince you of that, but it’s true. Really it is.”
He cursed the fact that he didn’t have so much as a screwdriver to help, but he hoped that what he could do would be enough. At the very least, he wanted Kevin to be able to walk a little easier. It couldn’t be easy with the braces in this state; now that he thought about it, it must be pretty painful.
“I want to help you, too. We can get these fixed properly or replaced later, I just want you to be able to move freely until then.”
“You’re very good with your hands, Mr Carlsberg.” Was Kevin’s only reply. He liked to listen to Steve, even if he found a lot of the mans ideas to be very funny and just wrong.
He was right about one thing though, he needed to be able to walk at a much faster pace if he wanted to keep up. So he let Steve work. He had to help, he had to do something. He wanted to redeem himself, right?
Kevin closed his eyes and forced himself to use that extra sense he ignored having. It had been so long since he’d been free to use it, to be himself. Yet there it was. It worked here as it always had, as though this town was not so different to his own. “North West. We should keep moving North West.” He didn’t want to talk about himself any more.
“You sure?” Steve asked, surprised by Kevin’s unexpected certainty, that sudden sureness of where to go. Still, the younger man knew that kind of certainty that came seemingly out of nowhere; he had very frequently experienced it himself, along with the doubt and disbelief that consistently followed from those he would try to share it with. He therefore wanted to give Kevin a chance, rather than simply dismissing whatever it was he had to say.
“Here you go, that should hold.” He said as he finished his work. He put his large hands around the metal and gave it a little shake to test the hold and gave a nod of satisfaction before standing to meet Kevin’s eyes. “Where did you get that? Northwest?”

“There are glowing arrows in the sky. You can’t see them. I do. There are dotted lines and arrows and circles. The sky is a chart that explains the entire world. But you can’t see it. I know that. The world makes sense. I– I believe that. I– I do. It has to. Otherwise…it wouldn’t make sense! And that would be the worst thing that could possibly happen.” -Steve Carlsberg, The September Monologues

Abby: Ah, Steve did the dishes.
Janice: How do you know I didn’t do them?
Abby: Because once when all the knives were dirty you cut a bagel with your key.
