My iPhone as a Wireless Mouse
This will be my first impromptu blog. Ā The other oneās Iāve posted were welling up in me for awhile and I just had to post. Ā Iāve already written about this topic briefly on facebook, but Iāll give you more background and details here.
Yesterday I played around with the notion of making my iPhone a mouse for my PC. Ā Iām an āengineeringā (went to school for it, not working in the field), and Iāve heard engineers being called āambitiously lazyā before. Ā Thatās me to a T. Ā So the simple idea started that I want to use my iPhone as a mouse for my PC.
I have previously used an app called TeamViewer, which allows me to completely control my PC from my phone or another computer anywhere in the world. Ā Itās kinda nice for some things, but the screen is a bit small to emulate the PC, and the mouse is difficult to move. Ā However, I use this app more than you would imagine (including at work).
This time I wanted to try something different, that controls the PC without much delay in response, and without slowing down itās internet connection. Ā Iām at work in the gas wells - Internet is already slow enough here. Ā This app called Remote MouseĀ does just what I wanted.
Now back to the āambitiously lazyā comment. Ā The whole point of this app was that I wanted to navigate my laptop while kicking back in my chair, WITHOUT having to lean forward to click (or even type). Ā The problem I ran into was (unlike TeamViewer), this app required your phone and PC to be connected to the same wifi network.
Not a problem, normally, but thereās no wifi here. Ā I made my own hotspot using AdHoc on my PC and was able to get the two to network. Ā I Googled how to setup AdHoc on Windows 7, because even though Iāve heard about it, Iāve never set one up. Ā We even used one on a job once, but I wasnāt sure how to troubleshoot it when the Internet failed. Ā No matter what I tried, my phone would not connect if 1. There was a password (who cares - not too many people to steal my wifi here). or 2. Using DHCP. Ā To solve this, I setup an unsecured network, found out itās IP address, and entered this all statically in the phone!
And it worked! Ā Mostlyā¦. The only problem was my Cell Phone would no longer connect to the Internet. Ā Iām not sure if this was due to the slow connection being shared, or (more likely) that the AdHoc didnāt properly share itās Internet. Ā After I setup my network, it was a breeze connecting the app. Ā I simply downloaded the software on my laptop, opened the program, and used itās setup features to find the right IP address, which I entered in my iPhone.
Once again, if anyone sees this and has more input to add, Iāll gladly update the page. Ā Please check out my other posts as Iāve left one incomplete due to lack of ideas fixing it. Ā Thinking further, this may solve my āairplayā dilemma, because I would maybe be able to control music on a laptop with this app (as long as Iām close enough to see the screen). Ā Iāll let you know how that goes when I try it out. Ā That will be on the other post or a new oneā¦
Thanks for reading.Ā
