Nepal quake: Death toll passes 4,400; fears of devastation in remote areas http://ift.tt/1EHpGZg Source: fox2now.com - Monday, April 27, 2015 KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) — Rescue and aid workers in Nepal are struggling to cope with the scale of the devastation dealt by Saturday’s powerful earthquake — digging through rubble by hand, performing surgeries in makeshift operating theaters, scouring notoriously difficult terrain for more victims. But power blackouts in the capital city of Kathmandu, supply shortages and difficulties getting around complicated the efforts. By early Tuesday, at least 4,400 people were confirmed dead as a result of the earthquake, the overwhelming majority of them in Nepal. More than 8,000 people were reported to have suffered injuries. CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta said doctors at one Kathmandu hospital had moved patients from the 120-year-old building and into another structure, where they were operating on patients in rooms normally not used as operating theaters. Hospitals were running short on supplies despite international efforts to bring in aid. Numerous aid groups and at least 16 nations rushed aid and workers to Nepal, with more on the way. And across the region, thousands prepared to spend another night outdoors, fearing that damaged buildings could collapse if there are more aftershocks. The destruction in Kathmandu, the capital, is stark: revered temples reduced to rubble, people buried in the wreckage of their homes, hospitals short on medical supplies and overflowing with patients. Former Mizzou All-American Shane Ray cited for marijuana possession Monday before NFL Draft http://ift.tt/1EHpGZg Source: fox4kc.com - Monday, April 27, 2015 COOPER COUNTY, Mo. — Former University of Missouri and Bishop Miege High School defensive star Shane Ray was cited by the Missouri Highway Patrol for marijuana possession and a lane violation on Monday morning according to an online arrest report . The report shows that Ray was cited for possessing less than 35 grams of marijuana, and also failing to drive in the right lane of a two or more lane highway. According to Missouri statutes, the marijuana charge is a class A misdemeanor and the traffic charge is a class C misdemeanor. Corporal Ryan White, the public information officer for Troop F of the Missouri Highway Patrol, said Ray was clocked speeding while driving westbound on Interstate 70 and pulled over at the 108 mile marker at about 5:45 a.m. on Monday. The trooper smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the car, performed a search and said marijuana was found. Ray was not impaired and cooperative with the traffic stop, and ultimately given a warning for speeding in addition to the two citations. He was released on his own recognizance per local policy, and has a court date on June 30 in Cooper County. Ray played defensive end for the Tigers and was the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2014. He broke Mizzou’s single-season sack record with 14.5, and also had 65 combined solo and assisted tackles. Mark Rosenbaum is teaching in Kathmandu as a Fulbright Scholar. He credits a warning saved his life. It meant that when the massive 7.8 magnitude quake came over the weekend, he wasn’t panicked. He just grabbed what he could and he ran. His Kathmandu apartment wasn’t leveled, but it was badly damaged. It wasn’t safe to stay. Fortunately, the State Department, which oversees the Fulbright program Rosenbaum is a part of, quickly found him new accommodations nearby. The local infrastructure is still intact. Mark has power, although not all the time. But there’s one big concern, even in the most modern parts of the country – water. The hotel complex he’s in now only has a three day supply. In the next 48 hours, he should learn if there’ll be enough water to sustain him or if it’s time to come home to Naperville. In the meantime, the moment the quake hit still runs through his mind. “Interestingly enough, the U.S. embassy had warned all Americans when we arrived back in January with the Fulbright Program, that there was a high risk potential for an earthquake,” Mark told WGN News via Skype. Mark says his hope is to stay in Nepal and to keep the commitment he made to teach there. He’s not scheduled to return until June.
