THE BAD GUY™

       it was no secret that if juniper ever had something to think about that was bugging her, she would wonder around to try to clear her head. this was one of those moments. she wandered the halls in a spacey daze trying to think of what her brother & sister would like for christmas & if she’d be even going back to see them in general. juni didn’t want to disappoint her family, but at the same time she didn’t exactly have the money to spend frivolously  (   her bank account would say different though.   )  before she even knows it she’s walking into a classroom, her eyes flickering up to see the president of sigma & realizing that she might’ve just walked into the end of an important meeting.  “   oh no, i’m not here for tutoring or anything like that. i actually think i came in here on accident. but i’ve been meaning to talk to you anyways sterling.   ”

“Alright.” He said, dryly and still a little intrigued somehow, then he grabbed a chair and sat with his chest turned to the back of it. “What can I do for you?”

Monty watched as the others filed out to get to work on their other assignments while they had their lunch. He turned to Sterling, opening his mouth to speak when he realized there was someone else in the room, quickly shutting it to let the president speak with the obvious outside and get them dealt with. He gave the person a small smile and wave as they made their way out of the room again. “It’s weird,” he commented as he turned back to Sterling. “We’ve got like tutors at the university library and stuff, but people still come to us to try and get us to do their homework for them,” he commented with a roll of his eyes and let out a laugh. “It’s like, this isn’t a teen movie or old sitcom, we’re not going to do your homework for you for free anymore,” Monty continued to ramble. 

“Look,I get it. You think just because of the frat I’m in and being captain of the baseball team means I’m a complete asshole and douchebag. I’m actually nether of those or I try not to because I am a good person if you ask the people around me.”

“Sounds more like you’re trying to convince yourself of that, but alright.” He raised his brows in a ‘weird flex, but okay’ kinda way. He almost told the other that he was the president of Sigma Tau and yet didn’t reek of stale cheetos and sadness, but that was a little too on the nose.

“As if I really give a fuck about whatever the people in the college do. I’ll have to say... I dunno, that Milo guy from Beta?”

Matt just chuckles and shrugs. He knows what this boy was playing and Matt was having none of it. Physically, Matt was bigger, mentally, he knew that the boy was smart, but he had no care for that. Matthew Wilson was one hella smart kid too. He wasn’t about to indulge someone as immature as Sterling. “So why are you gracing me with your presence when we clearly don’t like each other?”

“Aw don’t be like that.” He said. “I’m just indifferent so far. There’s a difference.” He gave Matthew a sly smirk and as shitty as it was, that was an honest answer. So far Sterling has no enemies, only liabilities. He’s willing to change that, though. The real question is, who would be the unlucky bastard to be on his sights? “The reason I came here was to divulge this little Sigma bash. Open for everyone, really. Even Betas.” That usually wasn’t the case with Sigma parties, but as Sterling told the rest of his brothers: what the fuck was Elitism getting them? Nothing but lame Star Wars themed parties with a bunch of foul-smelling nerds discussing the philosophy of Batman.

“Strength in unity. Making Sigma something bigger than the currently pathetic sum of its parts.”

Matthew was ready to fight, but one, he couldn’t do any of that shit in public if he didn’t want his father making his way from Australia to kick his ass, and two, even his mom would kick his ass for getting in trouble, regardless of reputation and family name. So he rolls his eyes instead and lets the book go, “Yeah, you have a problem with that?”

”No, of course not. Being a beta is in itself already enough problem for you.” Sterling teased Matthew with an almost surgical precision. To be quite honest, that was his thing, just being unpleasant to people, bit by bit, until they’re close to exploding, then backing off. He liked to see what was the threshold for annoyance, see what he could get away with.

“They’re mostly hideous, insecure nerds who think the world owes anything to them just because they’re ‘nice’. Air quotes on nice. But they have potential nevertheless... They just need to do whatever I say and they’ll get whatever they want. Simplicity itself.”

The girl was minding her own business, reading a book, when she noticed all those boys working out. She knew it wasn’t cool to stare, but what could she do? Between a peek here and there as she tried to read her book, Juliette felt her cheeks burn as she realized that one of the boys had noticed her staring. “S-Sorry… I didn’t mean to snoop, sorry,” she said. “I’m not looking for a tutor, just thought it was really nice, you know, what you were doing. I don’t think the rest of the Zeta’s girls would be up that.”

“Thank you.” He said, nonchalant, as he got close to the girl and shook her hand. “You must know the saying: a healthy mind in a healthy body." The sigmas obviously had the first part of it down. The second one, however. “Juliette, right? I think I’ve seen you once or twice around campus.” He was understating it. He knew exactly who the girl was, but people are often creeped out when approached too... Directly. She could be very useful, as a PR major. “So, what are you majoring in?”

His brows raise immediately when he hears a voice, and he rolls his eyes before chuckling in amusement. Matt was far from stupid, and though people might not perceive him as smart, those same people would always end up surprised to find out. “This is, a, a book written by scholars in Yale and Harvard, and b, I’m a psych student, majoring in pre-law, so I’m not sure where I fall under your choices.”

He put on his best condescending ‘good for you buddy’ face when he heard the guy speak. “Then it’s settled: You’re just not that good at interpretation, because I verily doubt that what you said is really expressed in there.” As soon as the other loosened his grip on the book, Sterling grabbed it, curious, but mostly amused. And not actually amused either. Just enough to antagonize the other. “Let me guess... You’re a beta?”
