The Kind of Night That Doesn’t Want to End - A Yoshikaru OneShot story
( I take requests btw :) )
The cicadas were screaming again.
Not just chirping—screaming, like the entire forest had decided to yell about how hot summer was. Yoshiki sat on the narrow wooden porch outside his house, chin resting on his knees. The air was thick with humidity, warm enough that the boards under him still held the heat of the day. He watched the sky fade from orange to purple behind the trees. The countryside always looked calm at night. But Yoshiki knew better than to trust that. The sliding door behind him rattled open.
H: “Oi. Yoshiki.”
He didn’t have to look. He could recognize that stupid unserious voice from a mile away.
Y: “Yer late,” Yoshiki said.
Hikaru stepped outside and dropped beside him like he owned the place, legs stretching out across the porch.
H: “Late? I told ya I’d come after dinner.”
Y: “Yeah, but yer still late.”
Hikaru snorted.
H: “Yer real picky today, ain’t ya?”
Y: “Someone’s gotta be.”
The two of them sat shoulder-to-shoulder, staring out at the fields beyond the house. Fireflies blinked slowly over the grass like tiny floating stars. After a moment Hikaru nudged him.
H: “Ya ignored my messages earlier.”
Y: “I did not.”
H: “Ya read ’em though.”
Y: “…Yeah.”
H: “Then ya ignored ’em.”
Yoshiki clicked his tongue.
Y: “I was busy.”
H: “Busy doin’ what?”
Y: “…Thinkin’.”
Hikaru leaned back on his hands.
H: “Man, that sounds dangerous.”
Yoshiki shot him a flat look.
Y: “Shut up.”
Hikaru laughed quietly.
The sound was warm and familiar, the kind of laugh Yoshiki had heard a thousand times growing up. It always made the evening feel easier somehow. A breeze rustled the nearby trees. Hikaru tilted his head slightly.
H: “Yer real quiet tonight.”
Y: “Am not.”
H: “Are too.”
Yoshiki sighed.
Y: “…Just tired.”
H: “Hmm.”
Hikaru studied him for a moment longer than usual.
H: “Yer lyin’.”
Y: “I ain’t.”
H: “Ya are.”
Yoshiki shoved his shoulder.
Y: “Quit actin’ like ya know everythin’.”
Hikaru grinned.
H: “Well, I know you at least.”
That made Yoshiki pause.
He looked at Hikaru out of the corner of his eye.
Sometimes it still felt strange- how easily Hikaru said things like that. Like it was obvious. Like it had always been obvious.
Hikaru noticed the look.
H: “…What?”
Y: “Nothin’.”
H: “Ya keep starin’.”
Y: “I ain’t starin’.”
H: “Yeah ya are.”
Y: “Shut up.”
Hikaru laughed again, softer this time.
H: “Yer weird tonight, Yoshiki.”
Y: “Yeah, yeah.”
The sky had grown darker now, turning a deep blue. The first stars began to appear. Hikaru stood suddenly.
H: “C’mon.”
Y: “Where?”
H: “Inside.”
Y: “Why?”
Hikaru held up a plastic bag.
H: “I brought snacks.”
Yoshiki stood up instantly.
Y: “…Ya should’ve said that earlier.”
H: “Wow.”
Yoshiki’s room smelled faintly of laundry soap and warm wood. The fan near the window spun lazily, pushing around the humid night air. Crickets had taken over the cicadas now, their steady chorus drifting through the open window. Hikaru flopped down on the floor beside the bed.
H: “Man, it’s cooler in here.”
Y: “Barely,” Yoshiki said.
Hikaru began pulling snacks out of the bag.
H: “Chips. Candy. An’-”
He held up a bottle.
H: “Ramune.”
Yoshiki’s eyes lit up.
Y: “Oi, gimme.”
H: “Hold on.”
Hikaru popped the marble inside with a sharp clink.
H: “Alright.”
They ended up sitting cross-legged on the floor, sharing everything between them. Half the conversation was pointless. Complaining about school. Talking about some weird rumor going around town. Arguing about which snacks were better. At one point Hikaru leaned back and stretched.
H: “Man… I’m full.”
Y: “That’s ’cause ya ate most of it.”
H: “Did not.”
Y: “Ya did.”
H: “Proof?”
Yoshiki gestured to the empty wrappers.
Y: “Evidence.”
Hikaru squinted at him.
H: “…Circumstantial.”
Yoshiki rolled his eyes.
Y: “Yer impossible.”
H: “An’ yet ya still hang out with me.”
Y: “Unfortunately.”
Hikaru grinned lazily.
Time drifted by. The room grew quieter. Eventually Hikaru lay down on the floor, using the side of Yoshiki’s bed as a pillow.
Y: “Oi,” Yoshiki said.
H: “What?”
Y: “Yer gonna fall asleep there.”
H: “I’m comfy.”
Y: “Yer literally usin’ my mattress as a pillow.”
H: “Smart, right?”
Yoshiki leaned over the edge of the bed and looked down at him. Hikaru looked back up. Their faces were suddenly much closer than expected. For a moment neither of them spoke.
H: “…Why ya lookin’ at me like that?” Hikaru asked.
Yoshiki blinked.
Y: “Like what?”
H: “Like that.”
Y: “I ain’t doin’ nothin’.”
H: “Ya are.”
Yoshiki hesitated. Then he sighed.
Y: “…I just like lookin’ at ya, alright?”
The words slipped out before he could stop them. Silence fell over the room. Hikaru sat up slowly.
H: “…Ya what?”
Yoshiki’s face warmed.
Y: “Forget I said anythin’.”
But Hikaru grabbed his sleeve.
H: “Hold up.”
Yoshiki looked back down at him. Hikaru’s ears were slightly red.
H: “…Ya mean that?”
Y: “…Yeah.”
Hukaru scratched the back of his neck.
H: “…That’s kinda nice actually.”
Yoshiki blinked.
Y: “Really?”
H: “Yeah.”
A small smile tugged at Hikaru’s lips.
H: “’Cause I kinda like lookin’ at you too.”
Yoshiki felt his heart stumble. Neither of them moved. The fan hummed softly overhead. Outside, the crickets continued their endless chorus. Hikaru leaned forward slightly.
H: “…Hey, Yoshiki.”
Y: “Yeah?”
H: “…Can I try somethin’?”
Y: “Try what-”
Hikaru kissed him. It wasn’t perfect. Their noses bumped a little, and Yoshiki made a surprised noise. But the kiss was soft. Warm. When they pulled apart, both of them looked stunned.
H: “…Well,” Hikaru said.
Y: “…Yeah.”
They stared at each other for a second before both laughing quietly.
H: “That was kinda clumsy,” Hikaru admitted.
Y: “A little.”
H: “Wanna try again?”
Yoshiki hesitated. Then nodded. The second kiss was slower. More careful. Yoshiki’s fingers lightly grabbed Hikaru’s shirt without thinking. When they finally separated again, both of them were smiling. Hikaru flopped backward onto the bed.
H: “Man.”
Y: “What?”
H: “My heart’s goin’ crazy.”
Y: “…Mine too.”
After a moment Hikaru rolled onto his side.
H: “Hey, Yoshiki.”
Y: “Yeah?”
H: “Mind if I stay over?”
Yoshiki sighed.
Y: “…Yer already on the bed.”
H: “Good point.”
Hikaru shifted closer under the blanket. Soon their shoulders touched. Then Hikaru wrapped an arm around him naturally, like it was the most normal thing in the world.
Y: “Oi,” Yoshiki murmured.
H: “What?”
Y: “Yer clingy.”
H: “Too late now.”
Yoshiki pretended to complain, but he relaxed against him anyway. Hikaru rested his chin lightly near Yoshiki’s shoulder.
H: “…Yer warm.”
Y: “So’re you.”
Outside, the countryside was quiet now. Only the crickets and the soft rustling of trees remained. Hikaru’s breathing gradually slowed.
H: “…Night, Yoshiki,” he mumbled sleepily.
Y: “…Night, Hikaru.”
Yoshiki hesitated. Then he leaned over slightly and pressed a soft kiss against Hikaru’s hair. Hikaru smiled without opening his eyes.
And before long, the two of them drifted off together- curled up in Yoshiki’s small room while the summer night carried on outside, calm and endless.

I haven't touched ibis paint in literally half a year so have this drawing of Hikaru I've been procrastinating on doing (btw i got the motivation to do it as soon as I found out we had an important test tomorrow my brain sure is special..)
You know your ship is doomed when they start talking about a place they wanna go to the future and say shit like "let's go together someday" I fear the chances of that ever happening are very slim... mokumokuren please do my babies some justice.

Thinking about how hard 'hikaru' has had it. Imagine the guy you love suffers because of you and you just keep reminding him of his (ex but not really) crush who's dead. Hes so strong I wouldve probably ran away like 'hikaru' was planning to🥹🥹 My poor baby i wish I could meet him and tell him he's not hikarus vessel he IS hikaru himself💔
