So, thereâs been two episodes where Chloe has made racist remarks, yeah? Kung Food and Animeastro, about Marinetteâs uncle and Kagami respectively. This alone is quite strange, as Kung Food was for little discernible reason, from what I remember, while Animaestro was love rival stuff. Youâd expect her remarks to be MORE frequent, but make LESS sense as the series went on, but it just stops there, and it was at its worst in the first iteration. Guess she ran out of them for the series. You know whoâs missing from this list? Marinette herself. Why? Itâs weird because her being racist towards asian people SEEMS like a Marinette motivated thing, itâs the only logical reason she doesnât like asian people. Chloeâs ignorance makes her blind to fact Marinette is half asian, I guess.
Is Chloe in Kung Food projection for the teamâs ignorance of asian cultures, aka Kung Foodâs design? Thatâs for you to decide.
Calling her racist is such a stretch by people who don't like her.
1)Kung Food: Chloe is ignorant, that's a given. Thing is, Chloe *likes* Sushi. It's one of her favorite foods. She's not mocking Chinese culture at all in this scenario. She's mocking the idea of entering a soup in a cooking competition(which yes, it's really not a good way to win. A soup doesn't show off nearly enough skills compared to other dishes. Source: I'm a cook and I've medaled in cooking competition.) Edit:I just looked up what he made, 'Celestial Soup' there's even a Miraculous Recipe for it. You're going to try to win a competition with a Puree? hahahahaha. Taste doesn't come into it. You're never getting any kind of good marks for knife skills out of a *puree*. Oh God, what does that say about the other cooks? RIP Alya's mom.
Chloe doesn't even argue about Sushi being Japanese once corrected. She *Does* call him Japanese later, but that's making a lame excuse to gtfo after she's just sabotaged his soup. Remember, Chloe's stupid as per canon so holding more than one thought in her head at once is going to be tricky, right? Like you could tilt your head, squint and say it was racially motivated, but it requires being ungenerous to her specifically in an episode where the writing doesn't care enough to separate Dragon Ball Z from Chinese culture so...
2)In Animaestro she mentions Kagami stealing Adrien and he'll be 'eating sushi for the rest of his life!' ummm again, she *likes* Sushi. It's what she'll remember from Japan (She's not smart, remember?) and you *do* generally eat it in Japan. You don't have to but it's pretty likely. (Source: Lived in Japan for a yr) Would it be racist to say someone going to France would be 'eating Baguettes for the rest of his life!' ?
These are both cases of people deciding she's racist first(because all bad people have to have ALL the bad flaws) then reverse engineering proof.
These are the same people who argue Roland's not racist for not wanting 'Rice Flour in the bread dough' as if that Metaphor isn't extremely on the nose.
ML is trash at handling race, I'll give you that. It's regularly engaging in racial stereotypes and cultural insensitivity when it's *not* trying to. It's also trash at gender, sexuality, misogyny... I sense a trend.
Long Story short: We have no reason to believe Chloe dislikes *Asian* people, or even looks down on their culture. She dislikes people associated with Marinette, or people trying to move in on Adrien. She doesn't need racism, there are so many perfectly good reasons to hate people on an individual basis.
