“Ah- feck me!” She exclaimed. And then as she got her bearings the feeling from off the castle made her pause. It was like a thousand fire hands crawling over her.

Danger.

There are rows upon rows of impaled skeletons stretching out for miles around the castle. A swarm of bats fly overhead screeching into the night. A pack of wolves step out from between the rows of spears, watching Steph, intently. The doors of the castle open with a rumbling groan, almost invitingly.

“While you still have cognitive function. You have the ability to make things right with him.” Stephanie replies.

“Yes. I got into a… carriage accident. Fell into a lake. Nearly drowned. The carriage was metal and wrapped around my hands. I had to have more metal inserted inside them to keep my hands semi functional… but I can no longer work as a surgeon. Not without it magical aid to stabilize my hands… years of schooling wasted…” she sighs.

“But there is more than one way to save lives.” She takes a breath.

“How long ago… did your wife pass?”

“A month ago.” He answered darkly. “The Catholic Church arrested her and burned her before I could do anything. I was traveling. Like a man. Like a human. Without magic.” He explained, it’s unclear who he’s the most angry at, the church, the world, or himself.

“Have you been eating?” She asks. Looking him over.

“Depends. Normal food which does nothing for me except delivers good taste, or blood?” Dracula asked with a dry chuckle.

“Blood. Though if you like and you have ingredients I could make you something.” Stephanie replies. Apparently unafraid of his dietary habits.

“Is there any particular source you prefer for blood? Or a certain blood type?”

He looks at her in surprise. Even Lisa was put off by his dietary requirements those first few months. “Uh, A+ and O- are my favorite blood types.” He stammers. “Virgin blood also has a delectable taste to it but it’s too addictive for my tastes.”

“I…like a pomegranate chicken dish however. I do believe I have the ingredients for it in the pantry.” He says after thinking about it.

She waves her hands and is back in the robes she was wearing before. Reaching a hand into her pocket. She reaches in up to her elbow. An irrationally large pocket. Which looks smaller on the outside. And pulls out a package. It’s yellow and appears to be some sort of foil. It smells sweet. She sets it down on a table near him. And then steps back. She moves her hands in the way sorcerers do.

And as she does his attention is drawn to the ring finger of her left hand. Where it looks as though a gem was shoved into her finger quite violently.

She finishes her spell and there is yet another package in her hand. This one is see through and full of blood.

“Okay. So I’ll warm this up for you. Because I’m assuming you don’t like it cold. I’ll just need to boil some water. You don’t have any allergies do you?”

“No allergies. Well, the flowers of garlic but humans don’t eat that part.” Dracula admitted staring at the package in her hand, and noting her ring finger. “May I ask what happened? He asked nodding at her finger.

“My hands? I already told you. Carriage accident- ah… I was wearing an engagement ring when… when I crashed.” It’s clearly a sore subject. Judging by her face.

“Would you show me to the kitchen?”

He led her down a single flight of stairs and to a spacious, and surprisingly clean, kitchen.

“Chocolate. I always carry some with me. It helps heal the wounds inside the heart. This one has nuts. Hence why I asked about allergies. You just peel the foil.” She explains, following him.

I’ve had something like this before.” He said braking off a piece and nibbling on it. “Across the ocean there’s a civilization called the Aztec Empire, they make drinks out of a bean that tastes a bit like this. There’s a vampire over there named Olrox that was kind enough to share some with me.” He added as he took a seat inside the kitchen.

“Kind indeed…” she muses. Moving to snoop through cabinets.

“So do you have a recipe? For the chicken.” She asks as she pulls out a pot.

“Also… water… I’ll have to find a well I assume?”

“Recipe book in the cabinet above the sink, it’s simply called Romania. And no, the castle has internal plumbing.” Dracula explained snarfing down the rest of the chocolate. Damn. It was good. And it did help him feel better.

“Were you serious about helping me kill those responsible?” He asked after a moment. “Now that I’ve calmed down, I can see the wisdom of your argument.”

“How… patriotic.” Steph muses. She finds the tap and fills the pot. Setting it on the stove and then checking the stove for firewood.

“Oh yes. Absolutely. Just no innocents. Which might mean a little torture for information on who all was involved…” she replies.

“And I have some fun torture methods. One involves a rat. And a jar and duct tape…” she smiles brightly.

“Does it also involve heating the bottom of the jar so the rat has to chew its way out through the man’s belly?” Dracula asked with an equally bright smile.

“If all else fails, I can see the memories of people when I drink all of their blood.” He mentions casually. “But to do this, I want to get my son, make amends if possible.”

She finishes her spell and there is yet another package in her hand. This one is see through and full of blood.

Once inside the castle, the doors close behind her. Electric lights then lit up, revealing the grand entrance hall, lights then lit up down only one of the corridors of the castle, as if the castle itself were trying to lead Steph somewhere.

A pack of wolves step out from between the rows of spears, watching Steph, intently. The doors of the castle open with a rumbling groan, almost invitingly.

“Oh great. This bodes well.” She mutters. She takes a step back to glance at the castle. And then the spears. Estimating a time period.

Then with a wave of her hands she changes her clothing into a more time appropriate dress. A green one. Tucking the eye under her dress and shifting Cloakie into a hooded cloak.

“Once more into the breach.” She mutters as she steps inside.

Once inside the castle, the doors close behind her. Electric lights then lit up, revealing the grand entrance hall, lights then lit up down only one of the corridors of the castle, as if the castle itself were trying to lead Steph somewhere.

“Okay girl. I hear you…” Steph replies to the castle. Moving to rub her hand down one of the walls.

“Let’s go…” she follows the lights as they come on. “But if you’re leading me into a trap I will kick your ass. You probably don’t know what a wrecking ball is. But you’ll find out…”

There’s a brief zap of static electricity, almost like a playful swat.

There is a roar of frustration from a chamber up head. “ANOTHER FAILURE!” A man’s voice bellowed with rage. “MUST I USE HUMANS TO BUILD MY ARMY?! WHY CAN’T I SUMMON THESE NIGHTCREATURES TO ENACT MY REVENGE?!” There’s a clatter and the sound of glass shattering as it hits the floor, like someone swept the contents of a table off in frustration. Then silence. Then sobbing. Faint, heartbroken.

She goes to turn around but the cloak tugs her forward.

“Uh- hello. Sorry I walked in. The doors were open. Are you alright?”

His head turns, the shadows hiding his face, but at the angle, a single eye glowing crimson is seen. “If you’re here to kill me, believing my grief will make me weak, then you are mistaken sorcerer.” He said, smelling the magic coming from her. Then he processed what she said. “The doors…opened for you?”

“Pardon the familiarity. But your first name wouldn’t happen to be Vlad would it?”

“It is.” Dracula gave a tired sigh as he walked over to a regal looking black oak chair and dropped down into it. “Has Cerys been warning her students about me now? Is all of Kamar-Taj warned of the oh so great vampire king?” He asked bitterly.
