“There’s never too many candles,” you responded to which he mouthed the words.

He’d been thrown for a loop when he saw the different colored candles the night before that were being lit for different reasons as the new year was welcomed, but he loved it nonetheless. There was a soft hue given off by the flame that made his skin glow slightly. You stared at him as he lit another candle in the center of the table.

“Okay!” you clapped. “Remember, Aunt Lisa and Aunt Jane aren’t talking to each other but Uncle Tim and Uncle Liam are. Maggie is current mad at Leni for some unknown reason and Leni is beefing with Kaiden who’s-”

“The reason why Aunts Lisa and Jane aren’t talking to each other,” Yonghwa finished. He’d been roped into the drama from the start since you had decided to play a neutral ground in this whole thing.

“Right. And there will probably be other drama starting or ending but just don’t get involved. The drama is fun to watch, but not fun to be a part of.”

He nodded. Coming from a rather small family, this was his favorite time of the year. Not only did he get to indulge in a culture completely different from his own, he also got to be nosy and hear everything that had happened since the last New Years’ celebration that had happened that he hadn’t heard about before.

“Who do you think will cave first and start speaking to the other?” he asked, he was betting Jane would cave first…as was your dad.

“Lisa,” you answered without a heartbeat. “She said she was ready for this to be done and over with before the new year starts.”

Doil was beginning to get anxious. Maybe living in such a remote area wasn’t the best idea after all, although neither of you would deny that the privacy the cabin the two of you lived in was a much needed change taking in everything the two of you had endured in such a short period of time. But looking back on it now…the cabin was really only a good idea when it was just the two of you.

“Are they getting closer together?” he asked nervously, watching as you shifted uncomfortably.

Your contractions had started a while ago and had been pretty spaced out leading the two of you to believe there was nothing to be concerned about…until they grew stronger and closer together. He’d called your doctor after having had enough of you saying you were fine and that there was nothing to worry about to explain the situation. There was no denying that you would be having your baby within the next few hours at the earliest - and you would have to do it in the cabin without a doctor or trained medical professional if he didn’t get a path cleared to get you to the nearest hospital.

“A little,” you groaned. “Has the snow let up?”

He nodded, “It stopped snowing a few minutes ago, but I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to get a clear path or even how the roads- Are you okay?”

“I think my water just broke.”

His eyes widened.

The soft snow on the ground softened the sounds of your heels on the pavement as you walked into the abandoned amusement park. Your coat fluttered around the hem which fell near your shins, but you still remained warm as you made your way to the entrance of the building Minhyuk - or Rieul as he currently went by - tended to spend his days. 

Once inside, you looked around quickly spotting him and his parrot who called your name upon your arrival. Minhyuk looked up from whatever he was doing at the desk and smiled instantly. Rising to his feet, he made his way over to you quickly hugging you tightly. He lifted you up off the ground and spun you around, the coat and dress you were wearing fluttering around you.

“Minhyuk!” you laughed as he set you down beginning to dance with you as he hummed a tune you were all too familiar with. “I want you to know-”

“-that I'm never leaving-”

“-'Cause I'm Mrs. Snow, 'til death we'll be freezing.”

You watched as Dohwan poured an obscene amount of sugar into the cookie dough you had designated him to make. There was clearly something wrong with the dough as you could see it was far too watery. Had he even followed the recipe you gave him?

“Is it supposed to look like this?” Dohwan asked, noticing that you were paying much more attention to him than the cookies you had been decorating.

“Not quite….have you been measuring?” you asked.

Based on the strange look he gave you it was clear he hadn’t been. “Those weren’t suggestions?”

Your mouth dropped. In your mind, baking was a science. One small misstep and it could all quite literally go to shit. And as it stands, you were currently watching it head in that direction.

“Suggestions?”

He nodded, “Yeah. I’ve never seen anyone measure when baking…”

You sipped from the glass of wine as you avoided eye contact with your aunt who was in yet another argument with your uncle about lord knows what with insults being thrown. The last thing you needed was to be roped into the argument and pick a side. And it was all going well…until your darling sister brought you up after jumping in herself.

“(y/n), actually saw the whole thing and she said that she saw Uncle Tim with the girl.”

You closed your eyes before sending your sister a glare just as your aunt snapped her neck to look at you, beginning to demand answers from you.

Needing a way out, you attempted to find your boyfriend, but he was too busy chatting with your mother somewhere in the kitchen to come to your aid.

“You know, I think Sangbum just called for me,” you said as you stood up, escaping from her prying questions.

Once in the kitchen you beelined straight to the man who was laughing at something your mother said while she was putting away dishes.

“Mind if I borrow him for a bit? Thanks Mom!” you rushed, as you grabbed Sangbum and pulled him away to an adjacent room. “We need to leave. Like now.”

You stretch your mitten covered hand out and catch a snowflake that manages to stay on for a minute before Jeha’s head bumps into it and melts it.

“We’ll find him,” Seonho reassured your son who was in tears after having spent a whole day looking for the missing dog. “I promise we’ll find him.”

You stood by the bedroom door listening into the conversation, just having gotten off the phone with yet another animal shelter attempting to find out if any dogs matching the description of yours had been brought in with no result. He’d been missing for two days now and your son was inconsolable.

“But Daddy-” your son, Jinho, sobbed, clinging to his chest.

“I promise we’ll find him. Don’t worry, okay?” Seonho said once again. “Why don’t you try taking a nap, hmmm?”

Jinho sniffled, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his sweater before nodding as he pulled away. You entered the room just them going over and hugging him as tightly as you could with the growing bump you adorned.

“Get some rest okay baby?” you whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of his head.

He lulled in your arms, before eventually falling asleep. As gently as you could, you laid him down on his bed with Seonho’s help before the two of you left the room, going into the living room.

“None of the shelters have brought in any Cocker Spaniels,” you told him softly. “What are we going to do?”

Seonho sighed deeply, wrapping his arms around you, “We’ll find him eventually. He couldn’t have gone far-”

“It’s been two days, Seonho. He could be anywhere.”

He knew you were right, but he also knew he needed to have hope that the small dog would be found.

“It’s still early. I’ll go take another lap around the neighborhood,” he posed. “You stay here and call me if he does end up showing up.”

You sighed and nodded, “Alright. Be careful.”

You followed after Seonho as he went to the door, stuffing his feet into a pair of boots and pulling on a coat. As he opened the door the two of you froze seeing the small dog sitting there patiently wagging his tail as if he hadn’t caused pandemonium inside your home for the past 48 hours.

You gulped as you heard the cries of the newborn baby that had just left the comfort of your womb it had known for the past nine months. You shook as your body tried to return to normal after the birth of your daughter.

You had actually birthed the little girl you were so terrified of bringing into this word with him.

Hanseok was nowhere to be seen. In fact you hadn’t seen him since you arrived at the hospital hours ago. He hadn’t stepped foot in the delivery room at all. You had done it all alone, much like you’d done during your entire pregnancy.

You knew Hanseok well enough to know that this would be the outcome. That you would be left your own devices so long as you remained by his side.

“Sir you aren’t-”

Hanseok burst through the door ignoring the poor nurse that had attempted to keep him out. His eyes landed on you, face contorting in what you could only assume was mild disgust. Not that you could blame him, you probably looked horrible. His eyes then shifted down to the small babe resting on your chest, cries no longer ringing through the air as she seemed to recognize the sound of your beating heart. She must’ve found some solace in the familiar thudding of your chest whilst you began missing the feeling of having her present inside, but comforted by her weight resting against you.

“Is that her?” he asked, not moving, eyes trained on the newborn.

You nodded, holding her closer. Only then did he take a step forward, followed by another and another until he reached your bedside, peering down at the innocent child he’d helped create. In that moment he felt his heart flutter, something he’d never felt before as he looked down at his daughter.

Was that love?

No.

It was merely another object of his fascination that wouldn’t betray him…not yet anyways.

Taecyeon heard the echoing silence the moment he walked through the front door. For a split second he welcomed it before his mind seemed to turn on recognizing that his house was not supposed to be this quiet. Especially when Christmas was only a few weeks aways and his kids were growing restless for Santa to come and give them their gifts.

As soon as he walked into the living room he was met with the answer to why the house was so quiet. Standing in two different corners of the room were his two kids, cheeks stained with dry tears and noses red.

That wasn’t good.

Looking to the dining table he saw you head in your hands clearly struggling with something internally. Walking over he let his hands fall on your shoulders massaging them slightly as he leaned down pressing a kiss to the top of your head.

“What happened?” he asked softly.

You didn’t answer merely tilting your head to the side in the direction of the hallway. He turned and froze as he saw the abnormal dent in the hallway wall.

“Oh my.”

“I don’t even know how they did that,” you whispered. “And I just lost it and now-”

“I’ll handle it,” he asserted. “You go clear your head or something.”

You got up without complaint and walked to the bedroom doing your best to ignore the dent. As soon as he heard the door close, he called over both kids taking a seat on the floor with them.

“I didn’t do it,” Hana got out shakily. “It was Hanbin.”

Her younger brother shook his head frantically pointing the finger at his older sister. “It was Noona!”

Taecyeon stopped both of them before they could let each other have it.

“I’m not asking who did it,” he began. “I want to know what happened and why whoever did it thought it was a good idea to dent the wall.”

He was met with silence. Then a light bulb turned on in his mind.

“You know I love the holidays,” you responded, taking out a few spheres and hanging them up on a couple bare branches. “And this place could use some festive vibes.”

He looked around his apartment, very clean and minimalistic. He hadn’t ever put much thought into decorating for anything since he was almost never there for anything more than eating meals and sleeping. But now that you had moved in, you’d begun bringing some life to the once semi-vacant apartment in Italy. From the small talk that his neighbors went out of their way to have with him, he could tell that you had somehow made feel more approachable than before, even if it was clearly evident that he was in some shady business.

“Can you plug in the lights?” you asked as you stepped away after putting the last ornament from the box on the tree.

Standing up from his chair, he made his way over, crouching down to plug in the cord, as he stood back up, he failed to notice the piece of ribbon that got caught on his sweater. You took a step toward wrapping your arms around his neck playing with the ribbon on his back. His hands went to your waist, resting there for a second before he leaned down pressing a kiss to your lips, a soft smile spread across his face as he pulled away - one only ever shown to you.

You smiled as you heard Hoon’s soft giggles as you formed the perfect snowball in your hands. Holding your hands out, you watched as Hoon took the perfect sphere into his hands. His eyes flickered up as he heard the familiar voice of his uncle, who’d just exited the house. The young boy looked at you and back down at the snowball before looking back at his uncle, almost as if asking for permission for what he was about to do. Yet, without so much as a blink, he reeled his arm back quickly, launching it forwards and letting the snowball that you had just made fly through the air before hitting Dalgun right in the face.

You stifled a laugh as clumps of snow fell from his face. The stifling didn’t last long as you soon gasped from shock as softly padded snow collided with your face. Hoon’s unfiltered laughter filled your ear before he squealed as a snowball flew past your face hitting the young boy square in the chest. One after another, snowballs began hitting the two of you. You and Hoon both crouched down making as many as you could to throw back at your impromptu opponent. Unbeknownst to you, Dalgun was inching closer and closer each time until he was directly in front of you knocking you off balance.

“Dalgun!” you cried as you fell, arms pulling him down with you. His arms held him up above you as his own laughs quieted down. He stared at you until Hoon jumped over his back, knocking the wind out of him and sending him falling onto top of you as his arms gave out. “You’re too heavy!”

Hoon’s childish giggles filled the air once again as Dalgun rolled off of you, taking his young nephew with him.

“That was unnecessary violence,” he laughed ruffling the boy’s hair. “Although it was worth the fun.”

You laughed sitting up and reaching out the small boy who happily leaned over in your direction, “Core memory?”

He nodded, “I hope every year is like this.”

“You push, I pull, and we pivot,” he explained as he pulled the pinetree closer to the end of the door he’d just put down. “We’re strong enough to do it.”

You stared blankly at the man before you. He’d done many interesting things over the past few holidays you’d spent with them. Up to now, the most confusing thing has been his idea to decorate every space available outside and inside your apartment for the upcoming holidays. As cute and nice as it was, you were convinced you had inhaled 50 years worth of tinsel and glitter in the span of three weeks. But this had to take the cake.

“This a real tree,” you pointed out.

“Yep,” he huffed as he pulled it closer to him.

“Not fake.”

“You got it.”

“Baby-”

“It’ll look great with the theme I want to do this year!”

Sighing, you stepped closer, “I’m not cleaning up the needles.”

He grinned at you letting go of the tree momentarily to kiss you in the middle of the parking garage where just about anyone would be able to see you.

For the sake of your sanity, you really hoped that was true. But just seeing the boyish grin on his face as he got the tree out of the truck ready to be carried up the nightmarish amount of stairs, was enough to make your heart sing.
