The calm before the storm

Jane was born into a middle-class family. To her, his life was ordinary and peaceful, and she loved it that way. She was a top scholar in her class, just like her older brother, and she dreamed of becoming a pilot to travel around the world and have the freedom of a lifetime. Yet, that freedom fell out of her hands when her family died. A group of a crime organization approached the front door, their footsteps heavy on the porch as they rapped sharply on the wood. The siblings were sleeping in their rooms while their parents watched television. The front door rammed open, and the firing commenced. The parents didn't have spare time to react, and they ended up both on the ground with five bullets each in the chest. As the children heard the commotion, they ran downstairs to see why their parents were screaming, but the scene was worse than what they expected. She soon found out that her father was a police officer working undercover. The news about her father had been hidden, and his case had been closed without being even inspected.

Years passed lonely for Jane without everyone. She moved with her aunt, the sister of her mother, soon after her parents died. At first, she heard their conversation. The conversations were heard softly throughout the house, and they couldn't afford another mouth to feed. She wanted to run somewhere far away. Pain and confusion had mounted in her mind already. She left the house at 18 and joined the police academy in hopes of finding out what happened to her family.

The day the portals opened, the classrooms were empty. She was alone and hopeless, and compared to that feeling, her vengeance seemed small. The screaming and yelling; in all, she was the only one left, with her parents' help.

tl;dr….. Jane Yoon's roots were settled in Switzerland for three generations. Her father was a police officer who was undercover for a crime organization. She's in the police academy to find out about her parents' deaths, but the moment the portals opened, she got a reality check. Life is more than justice or finding out the truth when there's the unknown. She graduated from the academy, became an officer, and was still looking for clues. The only clues available were a person in the Czech Republic. So, she also joined a guild fighting against the monsters.

His father was a doctor, and his mother was a housewife who looked after him and his sister. His grandfather ran a dojo in Japan that practiced budo, which was to be passed down to his father. When his father steered in a different direction, his sister was next in line. Yet, his father thought the techniques were useful, and he taught Aiden when he was a child. Swords were introduced when he was fifteen.

Maybe he wanted to be a doctor or a police officer; he hadn't decided on a career. Well, he was just a child, and his world was infinite in his mind. All he knew was that college was the route for him, a message his parents repeated every day.

The day the portals opened, Aiden and his family started their day like any other. Aiden excitedly started his junior year at UCLA, and the day seemed calm at first. Some students socialized, while others ran to their next class to avoid being late. All seemed like a typical day until the soil trembled. Students shouted and panicked as they ran to evade something arriving from the other end. He wanted to be a hero, but he ran instead. He looked for shelter as he quivered under a desk in an empty room.

The aftermath was worse. The monsters killed his parents and left his sister behind for him to take care of. When he awakened that day, confusion led his life. Why him?
