Lightroom 4 & Nik Software Filters - a big NO???
I just received my Lightroom 4 upgrade and what a surprise - after the installation all my Nik Software plugins dind't work. I check on Nik's website and downloaded the latest versions, which is stated to support Lightroom 4, but the result was the same. The only filter that is working correctly is HDR Efex Pro. For all the rest under "Edit In" menu I get this message: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unexpected error performing command: bad argument #1 to 'lower' (string expected, got nil) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The plugins DO work with the Lightroom 4 beta, but not with the original version 4. I sent an e-mail to Nik's support - still waiting for answer. I'll keep you posted of how the problem is developing. I believe this is a situation that all of the current Lightroom and Nik's users will experience these days after they upgrade to LR4. Meanwhile here are two links to different forums which also discuss this problem: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/971432?start=0&tstart=0 and: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lr4_external_editor_failure Do you have the same problem? Let me know if anybody already heard from Nik or Adobe for a solution. UPDATE: --------------- I spoke with Adobe support and they are recognizing the problem. They said their programmers are working on this and will include the solution in a patch soon. Here is the official article on Adobe sites: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/03/lightroom-4-hot-issues.html http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lr4_external_editor_failure UPDATE 2: --------------- While waiting for Adobe to solve all their problems with Lightroom 4 and THEN to release a patch, here is a solution I find best for me. Simply go to http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/photoshopcs6.html and download Photoshop CS6. It is a 60 days trial. It should be enough time for Adobe to release a patch. Meanwhile CS6 is truly amazing - I'm sure you'll like it too. After installing Photoshop CS6 trial - all NIK's plugins work like charm!
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4
Adobe just released the 4th version of their Lightroom which now supports Nikon D4, D800, D800E and has added many lenses support as well, like for the new Nikon 85mm 4/1.8G, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro, etc. You can order it in three different versions: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Upgrade from Photoshop Lightroom 3 Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Student and Teacher Edition See the Lightroom 4 detailed specifications below: The Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software For Mac And Windows (For Sale On Web) from Adobe is a complete photo management and editing suite for Mac OS X and Windows. Ideal for enthusiasts and professionals alike, Lightroom takes a nondestructive approach to photo editing, leaving the original files unmolested. All your adjustments and edits are stored in a database and applied to an image on the fly, so that you'll always be able to go back to the original image. This enables you to execute as many post-processing adjustments on a photo as you'd like, without making permanent changes to the original image. Lightroom also serves as a powerful organizational tool for your photographs. Organize photos to suit your needs via an intuitive folder-based data structure. Lightroom lets you store images on multiple storage devices, and it stores low-resolution previews of each image in its central database, allowing you to browse photos even when the original files are offline. You'll be able to search your images based on any number of criteria, accelerating the process of locating a specific image. Lightroom's interface is divided into five major components: Library, Develop, Slideshow, Print, and Web. Each screen serves its own purpose, and you can go back and forth between them easily. There is some overlap in functionality, but for the most part, the components are compartmentalized. The Library screen is where you organize and browse your photos. Enjoy full access to all folders in your library from this screen, allowing you to reorganize as needed. Apply keywords, ratings, color labels, and metadata additions to images. You can make custom searches to create "Collections" based on any of these criteria. The "Smart Collections" function updates on the fly as additional images meet your criteria. For example, you can have an up-to-date collection of all images that you've given a 5-star rating. There is also a "Quick Develop" panel allowing you to make minor adjustments to an image, without having to venture into the Develop screen. The Library also serves as the gateway to import and export images. Clicking "Import" brings up a redesigned screen: The Import window now expands to fill your entire display. Browse through your hard drive or a memory card to find images for import. You can leave the images in their original location, copy or move to a different folder, or copy and convert them to Adobe's DNG format. Apply Develop settings, add metadata, and add keywords during import, such as one for the camera used to capture the photos. Rename files and save a second copy to a backup drive during import. When you've finished editing, use the Library screen to export your photos with ease. You can use the "Export" function, which brings up a window with numerous settings -- including image size, sharpening, file format, and the like -- that you can customize. There is a new "Publish Services" section, enabling you to send images to your hard drive or Flickr with ease. Create as many presets for Publish Services as you'd like, giving you one-click access to frequently used export operations. This section can be further expanded via third-party plug-ins, available from Adobe's Lightroom Exchange website. The second major component of Lightroom is the Develop screen. This is where you'll do the vast majority of your photo editing and toning. Perform any adjustment imaginable here, including color temperature, exposure, black levels, contrast, sharpness, and brightness, to name just a few. You can make adjustments via sliders or tone curves, discretely modify color channels, and convert images to black and white. Numerous presets are available, allowing you to quickly apply a certain "look" to a photo, and you can create your own presets based on your favorite settings. The Develop screen also features useful History and Snapshot functions. History lets you browse through all of the adjustments you've made to an image, in the order that they were made, so that you can revert back to any stage in the image process. At any time, create a Snapshot of an image, which saves all of the settings you've applied, allowing you to continue to experiment with a photo after you've found a look you like. Remove dust spots and red eye from photos, thanks to Lightroom's spot editing tools. Create image masks to apply graduated filter adjustments to a photo, or use the brush tool to dodge, burn, and make other spot adjustments. You can add vignettes and simulated film grain to images, great for breathing analog life into digital photos. With distortion correction, "defishing" of images captured via fisheye lenses can be done from within the program. Correct for both fisheye and rectilinear distortion, a capability highly useful for those shooting with extreme wide angle lenses. Numerous lens profiles are included with the software, and you can save your own presets for oft-used lenses. Lens corrections can also eliminate the keystone effect that ensues when your camera is not straight-on a subject. Basic crop and rotation tools are also available for quick and easy adjustments. If there is anything that can't be handled by Lightroom, it's easy to export a photo to Photoshop CS4 or CS5 for editing; any changes you make to an image in Photoshop will be automatically reflected in Lightroom. Lightroom's other three screens are all about sharing your images. The Slideshow screen gives you all the tools necessary to create digital slideshows of your images, complete with transitions and music. View these from within Lightroom or export them to a PDF or video file to share. The Print screen allows you to print your images in any way imaginable. Adjustable for many standard paper sizes, it lets you visually lay out photos on them, allowing you to maximize the number of photos on a single page -- thus helping to reduce printing costs. Lightroom can automatically position photos so that space on a page will be used as efficiently as possible. Adjust prints for different paper types and color profiles, and add a signature plate if you wish. The Web screen gives you numerous means of outputting photos to the web. Adobe includes a number of HTML and Flash galleries, allowing you to create a web gallery without any knowledge of programming. These can be customized to suit your needs, and third-party galleries are available via the Adobe Lightroom Exchange website. Top new features in Lightroom 4 include: Highlight and shadow recovery, photo book creation, location-based photo organization, extended video support, white balance brush and additional editing brushes, video publishing, soft proofing, improved online sharing integration, emailing from Lightroom, and importing libraries from other software. Lightroom is sold as multiplatform software, which means it can be installed on either Mac OS X or Windows.

It seems to me that the initial “WOW, 5D Mark III is all I wanted” is more like waves in shallow waters. Looking at the details and leaving emotion on a side, we can clearly see the winner. I’m not saying that 5D Mark III is not an excellent camera, or that it won’t deliver astonishing images. We simply compare the cameras according their specifications. So what better has D800 to offer? Resolution: Having 1/3 more pixels opens big opportunities for the landscape & studio photographers aiming high details and precision. Image ratio: 5D Mark III has only 3:2 image mode, while D800 adds 5:4 mode as well. In addition D800 has cropped FX mode (with 1.2x crop) and DX mode (1.5x crop) White Balance presets. D800 has 12 and 5DMarkIII has only 6. D800 also has 5 customizable WB presets vs. just one on the 5DMarkIII. AF Detection: D800 has up to f/8 (up to 9 cross-type sensors), while his rival goes only to f/5.6. This gives huge advantage for D800, when you shoot with f/4 lenses and uses a 2x teleconverter. On 5DMarkIII you can use only f/2.8 lenses with 2x teleconverter. Autofocus Sensitivity: -2 to +19 EV for the Nikon and -2 to +18 for the Canon Built-in flash: Yes vs.No AE & WB Bracketing: Again D800 has advantage having up to 9 frames with 1/3, 1/2 or 1 stop increments, 5DMarkIII has only 3 frames with 1/3 or 1/2 increments USB: D800 has USB 3.0 (5 GBit/sec) and 5DMarkIII has the older USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/sec). Over 10 times faster transfer for your images and video! Bravo, Nikon! Shutter Durability: 200,000 cycles vs. 150,000 cycles in advantage of D800. This means 1/4 longer shutter life for $500 cheaper camera!!! What are 5DMarkIII advantages? Iso: ISO performance of 5DMarkIII is better at least on paper. We already saw the first samples, taken with the camera. It seems that NR is huge and causes not only noise cleaning, but smudging some of the details as well. Also D800 has the advantage to decrease the size image, which lead to noise reduction as well. I expect downsampled images from D800 to look better than both 5DMarkIII and Nikon D700. Autofocus System: 5DMarkIII has 61-point AF with up to 41 cross-type points. D800 has Advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX with 51-points (up to 15 cross-type points) Screen Resolution: 5DMarkIII has a slight advantage with a 1,040,000 dots 3.2" screen. D800 has 921,000 dots on it’s 3.2" screen. But Nikon included some innovations in this screen. It can self-adjust its brightness according to the ambient light, etc. Continuous drive: 5DMarkIII can burst with 6fps, against 4fps for D800. The Nikon though has an option to get 6fps in DX mode, when battery grip is attached. From all numbers and tables I can say one thing – Nikon innovates and Canon renovates! Most of the new features in 5DMarkIII are simply improvements over the previous MarkII. Yes they are important, but Nikon was already a step ahead about those. Now Nikon decided to blow away the DSLR market with such a MPx monster and we have to admit – in a very affordable price level. Let’s wait until first cameras are available, and I’ll post a "part II", with some real experience with these cameras behind. ........... Some thoughts from other sites ................................................... SonyAlphaRumors.com "... I have to say I am surprised to see so little innovation inside the markIII. I mean, there are many small improvements and some more major improvements (like the new AF system). But I think the Nikon D800 (and D800E) did more..." Mansurovs.com "... Nikon definitely surprised everyone with its ultra high-resolution Nikon D800 announcement earlier this year. Featuring an impressive 36.3 MP sensor... Canon ...decided to focus on image quality, autofocus features/performance and weather sealing – the three areas that have been receiving a lot of criticism from the Canon community for many years now..."

Canon 5D Mark III announced
March 2, 2012 London, UK Canon announced their new "enthusiast" level full frame camera - Canon EOS 5D Mark III. It is the replacement of the previous model 5DMark II and although there are no many new features, Canon have listened to their customers and "fixed" the major things they were criticized for - autofocus, weather sealing, shooting frame rate, etc. I won't describe the characteristics of this camera in details as you can see those at so many places online. Here is a link to the official Canon page of 5D Mark III. I am going to write a comparison between the 5D Mark III and it's main rival - Nikon D800. So check out my next article. Meanwhile you can pre-order the Canon 5D Mark III here: on AMAZON: Canon EOS 5D Mark III (body only) Canon EOS 5D Mark III with EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Flash
Nikon D700 price down $500
As March hit the calendar, Nikon's D700 prices started to drop down, as it was rumored before. First, they went down in Europe and it was followed in some USA stores now. The camera stores started to lower down the prices with fear. The bravest of all was Cameta Camera, with their drop of $200 and Amazon with their D700 price of $2519.93. One by one the big stores started to lower the prices as well. As I was writing this, the prices have changed several times, but now most of the stores has officially sell it for $2199. You can get yours from AMAZON, where I buy my equipment, or choose one of the hundreds other stores available today. Should we expect the prices to go even further down? I think no. Nikon will continue to produce this camera (as they say) and D800 hits the market soon, but many people will still prefer to get D700, because its excellent low-light/high ISO performance, which will keep the demand high. But let's face it - D800 has some big advantages and it's definitely a step forward for both - still photography and videography. I will continue to update the prices if thee is any change and will publish the lowest here. For those, who already made their purchase, I will say - take your camera and go shooting!
I Am THE BIG PICTURE
On February 7, 2012, Nikon announced their new camera D800, which has the remarkable 36.4MPx Full frame (FX) sensor.
I will start with "I really wanted to hate this camera" cliche and I will describe the reasons for that below. At the moment of the announcement I actually "forgot" everything bad and I really think that Nikon did a great job with this camera. I'm looking forward to have one of those "miracles" in my hands as soon as they are available on the market. I already pre-order mine. Meanwhile you should hurry up and if you still didn't pre-order yours - DO IT RIGHT NOW!!! Soon there will be a huge demand for this camera and if you don't want to wait endlessly to see it in stock - better pre-order it now. You can do that at Amazon - for D800 here and D800E here. Official specifications can be found here. And here are some pictures from different angles.
As I said above, I wanted to hate this camera, well, Ok - to "dislike" it. Why? Well, as many other photographers I waited for replacement of D700. As you may know D700 is amazing camera with 12MPx sensor and it is famous with it's extremely good performance in low light. When the rumors for 36Mp D800 started to look as it will be true, the logical reaction was WHY??? Who really needs that amount of MPx??? The more pixels means they will have smaller size. Smaller size means they will capture less light. Capturing less light means the image contains more noise. At the same time I was asking myself the contra-question: why Nikon would release something worse than what they have so far? The people are waiting 4 years for this replacement camera and Nikon wouldn't screw it for them. I decided to compare the pixel sizes - may be there I'll find the answer of my question. So here what I found: D7000 (16MP) - 4.78µm D4 (16MP) - 7.3µm D3x (24MP) – 5.9µm D3s (12MP) – 8.4µm D700 (12MP) - 8.45µm D800 (36MP) – ? (prediction is for 4.8µm) for reference: Sony A77 (24MP) – 3.89µm Phase One p40+ (40MP) – 5.95µm Canon 7D - 4.3µm Canon 5DMII - 6.4µm Canon 1Dx - 6.95µm Sure the D800 came out and it has pixel size of 4.88µm - just above the D7000. Btw D800's crop mode of 15.4MPx speaks about that itself. I was impatient to see the first full resolution pictures so I can compare the IQ, and I have to admit - I'm impressed. With similar pixel size of the D7000 the image quality in high ISO is significantly better. Compared to D700,  the noise from D800 (when the image is cropped to 12MPx) is somehow cleaner, without artifacts and it's quite pleasant to the eye. For those, shooting black and white - it will be even more welcomed. See some sample images - 100% crops. First one is the original image and the second one is downsampled to 12MPx: ISO800
ISO3200
ISO6400
ISO25600
Keep in mind that all images are not processed and no NR has been applied. You can download the full size images here. All images copyright Ferra.ru. You can also see the full size downsampled images here. As you can see - the images are almost noise free up to ISO3200 and the downsampled images at ISO6400 are still very good looking at 100%. It you decide to re-size the image, even the highest ISO will give you good quality to share images online, etc. And this is just about the IQ. The second "big" issue was the speed of shooting. But for such a big resolution camera it's relatively ok. D800 can shoot at 4fps (FX mode), 5fps (DX mode) and 6fps (DX mode with attached battery grip). Besides these two (initially thought as downfall) features, everything else excels in times both D7000 and D700. I'm also looking forward to see the official DXoMark score and I will update the information after it is released. The video in this new camera is also amazing. It is comparable with the one from D4. The key differences (beside the sensor size and noise profile) are the lack of Ethernet port and incompatibility with the new WT-5A Wireless Transmitter. Also the second card slot (besides the CF one) is not for the new XQD card, but uses CD cards. In exchange - D800 is the first camera with USB 3.0 port. THE CONCLUSION: I still don't have the camera and need to test it before I give my official score, but from what I see so far - Nikon D800 is very powerful camera - for both stills and video. You won't sorry if you get one. ...more after I have the camera to test it.
NASA captures the Earth at night with Nikon D3s
German videographer Michael König has compiled a breathtaking HD video from footage shot from the International Space Station. The original video clips, that König has processed and set to music, were created from a series of time-lapse stills of the Earth at night and include footage of Aurora Borealis and Australis.
Viewing the original still images on NASA's "The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth" website reveals they were shot with a Nikon D3S with 17-35mm f/2.8D and 14-24mm f/2.8G lenses.

LYTRO - Make it Magic!
Lytro lets you take pictures like never before. Unlike a conventional camera that captures a single plane of light, the Lytro camera captures the entire light field, which is all the light traveling in every direction in every point in space. So you can take picture now and set any focus point later.
Form follows function: The Lytro’s unique compact design is driven by its 8x optical zoom lens, which features a constant f/2 aperture. The Lytro’s anodized aluminum body is lightweight yet sturdy. At less than eight ounces, the Lytro puts remarkable power in a pocket-sized camera.
Proprietary light field science: The Lytro is the only camera that captures life in living pictures. Its innovative light field sensor captures 11 million light rays of data (or 11 megarays), including the direction of each ray, something conventional cameras don’t do. The light field engine then processes the data into a picture that is displayed in HD quality.
Unparalleled speed: The Lytro’s speed ensures that people never miss a moment. It turns on instantly and has an instant shutter. With no need to auto-focus, the Lytro has no shutter delays.
Low-light sensitivity: By using all of the available light in a scene, the Lytro performs well in lowlight environments without the use of a flash.
Significant storage: The Lytro is available in both 8GB and 16GB models, storing 350 and 750 pictures respectively. In addition, our first camera owners will enjoy free storage for the light field pictures they’ve uploaded to Lytro.com.
Seeing in 3D: Coming soon! Captured as a full light field, all pictures taken with the Lytro are inherently 3D. Special light field algorithms, available in 2012, will be applied to the light field pictures to enable viewing on any 3D display and to enable viewers to shift the perspective of the scene.

How Much Should A Web Site Cost?
There are many opinions about how much should a web site cost. This is one of the most frequently asked questions in the web design world. And this is not without it's logic, because there isn't just one answer to this question.
