How is it, that one Gif, can make me feel so many emotionsÂ
Somebody’s a little light on his feet. What’s your fighting name, the fancy dancer?

The Avatar State, 10,000 years apart
hi guys!  for a long time i’ve wanted to draw katara in her fancy earth kingdom garb, and i’ve finally decided to do it—drawing reference from one of my favorite costumes in the legend of zhen huan.  this is one of the first times i’ve drawn clothing and liked the outcome, so that’s fun.  i also tried to draw katara as young as she was on the show (instead of aging her to an adult, like i normally do when i draw avatar characters).
 (anyway, if you liked this piece, consider commissioning me for something similar!)
It may be hard to believe since Book 3 hasn’t even aired yet (SOON!), but we just had the final Korra animatic meeting this afternoon for the Book 4 series finale episode. It’s been bittersweet saying goodbye to so many amazing crew members as their teams have rolled off the production these last few weeks. Pictured here, left to right: Melchior Zwyer (director), Lauren Montgomery (supervising producer), Joaquim Dos Santos (co-executive producer), Ki-Hyun Ryu (supervising producer), me, Owen Sullivan (assistant director), and Mike. In hindsight, I wish we had lined up this shot so it looked like the Mac desktop tiger’s ears were sprouting from Mike’s head.Â
P.S. Though we had the animatic meeting, that still means there’s a TON of work left to do on Book 4. That is still part of the pre-production process.
So this is the near sweet ending.. Q_Q

You know what breaks my heart about this? Is that when Korra comes and practically tackles Mako, his reaction is, “You’re not mad?” Not, “Hey, you came into my office and destroyed my desk and embarrassed me in front of my superiors” but “please don’t be mad at me.”Â
It’s a codependent dynamic that I think really defines Mako’s end of their Book 2 relationship (and Korra’s as well to a lesser extent). And it’s a stage that most people go through on their journey to figuring out how to have healthy relationships. It’s the stage where nothing is more important than being on the same side, in which agreement and unquestioning mutual support are demonstrations of love, and in which fighting therefore must mean the absence of it.
When he broke up with her and Korra stormed out, I think there wasn’t even a piece of Mako’s mind that could imagine any situation in which she wouldn’t come back hating him. And hating him forever. He thought it was unsalvageable. And that’s why he moves on with Asami. And it’s also why he lies here. Because who wouldn’t?
Yeah, Mako’s still kind of stuck in an all-or-nothing mode, isn’t he? Either he agrees with Korra about everything, or the relationship must be totally broken and she must hate him. =(
It definitely makes sense given who he is, but it’s not healthy in the slightest, and it’s the reason why Korra needs to break up with him at the end of Book 2.
I just wish more people in fandom would get this. I’ve seen a lot of people assume that Mako’s meant to be the “rational” one compared to Korra’s violent emotion… but that’s really nowhere near close to the dynamic that we’re actually shown in canon. >_>;
Absolutely. And it’s not just fitting for Mako because of who he is. It’s super common in real life. I don’t think there was a single adult with an established relationship history who didn’t cringe or laugh (or both) with recognition at the line, “Do you want me to be supportive, or do you want me to say what I think?” Because the most terrifying discovery that you make early on in a relationship is that those are not the same thing.
When we get into relationships, we are so often looking for the other person to reflect ourselves (and our thoughts, opinions, and preferences) back to us. It makes us feel safe and secure and loved, and that’s fine. But so often we experience the other person’s failure to do that as a loss of love or as a problem with the relationship.Â
In a codependent dynamic, usually this means that one person just represses everything that might cause discord, pretending not to have genuine feelings or opinions about what the other person is doing because the conflict it would potentially cause feels so much more threatening than the other person’s behavior.  And then when they can’t suppress it any more, it all comes out at once, often in a destructive way. And then there is a period of intense remorse and “oh, this person must hate me—I must do anything to get them to not hate me anymore—maybe its doomed anyway—oh god what have I done.”Â
And again, this doesn’t mean that the relationship is doomed or toxic. It just means that Mako needs to learn how to be an actual person in a relationship rather than carrying water for Korra constantly and that Korra needs to learn how to listen to him better.Â
#the first round of commentary was great#BUT IT GOT BETTER#this is why i’m absolutely in love with the mako-korra dynamic#it’s dealing with complicated relationships and gives both characters more depth than if everything was sunshine rainbow happy love land or#clear cut rainclouds and thunder storms#the codependency issue doesn’t mean the relationship is doomed#it’s just something that needs to be resolved if they ever want to have a successful relationship#which is why their break up at the end of this book was absolutely necessary.#freaking otp and too many feelings gdi (via elementalavatars)

Just something I noticed while I was watching this episodes for the nth time. I love how Mako and Bolin flat-out refuse to leave her side even after she goes into the Avatar State. I mean, she is literally more powerful than both of them at that point. If she can’t stop the danger coming towards them, what chance do they have? Regardless, they stand their ground and still prepare for a fight instead of leaving it to her. Not a big deal, but I love their expressions in the first gif. :) It goes somewhere along the lines of ”That is a lot of crap coming towards us right now and oh hey what is she doing is she yep Avatar State okay back how do we deal with the crap”, as opposed to ”That is a lot of crap coming towards us right now and oh hey what is she doing is she yep Avatar State okay let’s go she’s got this.”
