“Just one of them new fancy places I seen you looking at on your computer sometimes. Not my cup of tea, exactly, but I hope you like it…”
Her eyes sparkle at his response. “You actually -- ?!” Laura skips over to Jack, a large grin plastered to her face. “I’m going to love it, I just know it.” A blush pools in her cheeks - she had no idea Jack even paid any attention to what she looked at online. “You might come to like it too, even if it isn’t your ‘cup of tea’,” she adds, shouldering her purse.

“Well, I really do wish you luck with that. It takes talent to make something like that work.” He says. Movement on the other side of the room catches his eye, and he smells blood on the air. The bartender had cut himself opening a can of tonic water. Jack clenches his jaw, trying his best to keep his cool; it’s been a couple days since he fed properly.
“I don’t know if it’s talent as much as just being a nerd...” she shrugs, turning to glance around the room. She hasn’t bared this much of herself to anyone - and yet, he was a complete and total stranger. Laura bites at her lip as she turns back, hoping she wouldn’t stumble as far back into the old habit of her lip splitting from it. “Is this your usual place?” Her fingers wrap around the cool glass, watching Jack’s jaw tighten.

Racing AU
@agent-houdini
Someone had sabotaged her car. Whether it was someone trying to fix a race, or someone tired of hearing about the miraculous Houdini, it didn’t matter.
Everyone had scrambled for their cars when they heard the sirens, Aegaeus was no exception. He waited til most of the cars raced off, having faith in his abilities to ditch the police.
What caused him to slow his getaway, was the car losing speed. He knew it was her, the loud mouthed girl, and while he found her rather annoying, she didn’t deserve to get caught.
Aegaeus did something he had never done before. He went back for someone. He whipped his car around, heading straight for her. Aegaeus lined up his passsnger door with her driver’s side. She was stopped completely, desperately trying to restart her engine.
Houdini looked up at him like a deer in headlights. The sirens were getting louder as the cops got closer.
“Well don’t just sit there! Get in or we’ll both be caught!” He shouted to her.
She jumped into action, snatching up her phone and bag before getting into his car. Houdini barely had the door shut before he took off. She yelled at him as she managed to get it shut. He responded with a loud “get your seatbelt on!”
Aegaeus weaved through side streets and alleyways. He cut through parking lots, and a car wash, until he was finally out of sight of the cops. He doubled back, reaching a mechanic shop tucked behind some buildings.
Once they were hidden inside, he killed the engines. They sat for a moment, listening to sirens. Once the sounds grew faint, Aegaeus sighed. She spoke first.
“Fuck.”
“Are you okay?” He asked, settling back in his seat.
“I just lost my car! Do you think I’m okay?!”
“Careful now.” Aegaeus raised an eyebrow at her, giving her a look. “We don’t want the cops to hear your shouting. I know a guy, I’ll give him a call about you car.”
“…okay, and what do you want in return?” She asked, narrowing her eyes at him. Aegaeus looked her over, smirking. Her eyes widened. “I am not that kind of girl!”
“Don’t worry, luv, you’re not my type.” He replied. “All I want in return, is the you let me bring your car here to my shop. I want to have a look. I want to know who sabotaged your car.”

“Great. I’ll go up and order then.” He gets up from their cosy little booth and goes over to the bar. He comes back a few minutes later with a dark-looking pint of stout and the copper-plated mug with a lime slice perched on the rim. “Here we go.” He settles back into his seat. “So, what do you do, Laura? Job, hobbies, anything…”
“Thank you,” she smiles, hands quickly finding the mug. Her thumb wiped at some of the condensation on the side, trying to hide her giddiness. “Cheers?”
“Anything? Well,” she hums, taking a sip, “I do some work on the side as a makeup artist. I’m also working on research of sorts - just some literature linguistics stuff, nothing too fancy. What about you?”
“Eh, used be a rancher’s kid, and then I was in the military and some other…jobs that came from that, and then I quit. And here I am.” He says, and really, that was the long and short of it. He would rather not relive the things he’d done, he already sees them on repeat when he closes his eyes during daylight hours.
Laura plays with her straw, stirring it in the mug. “Military? What branch?” She tries not to let her eyes linger too long on him, glancing around at everything but him. “Sorry, just curious. Have a few friends back home who are Navy and Marines…”
“Started with they Army. Found a niche, some folks who needed my help. So I helped them. Until I couldn’t anymore. Life got in the way.” He offers a half-smile. “But that part’s a little need-to-know.”
“Of course! I don’t mean to pry,” she says, putting her hands up. She was infinitely more curious about him. Would one more day as herself hurt? Probably not. Besides, when was the last time she actually went out for drinks with someone that had the implications of more than friends? Wishful thinking in the moment, sure, but Laura earned this.
“No, believe me. If it’s an answer I don’t want to give, I won’t.” He says, flashing an easy-going smile. “What else? I don’t mean to be rude, but languages and makeup doesn’t seem like the basis of a career. What else do you do?”
“Really, that’s it, I promise. Maybe I’ll become a translator one day, or a tenured professor at a small university.”
Color pricks at her cheeks - these two careers were what she considered prior to her life flipping upside-down and becoming a member of the Society. It’d also been a long time since she had admitted them to someone else. (— Laura also wasn’t about to admit her love for anime and nerd culture that would really put someone like Jack off.)
“It isn’t much, but I manage.”

“Doing my best, honey. By the end of the week, I’ll be right as rain. Now, give me a kiss, and maybe we can go out to dinner once I’m finished up here. Whatcha think about that?” He lightly traces her cheek with his fingertips. He can see exactly how worried she is, and that’s almost enough to break him then and there.
“I think that’s a fantastic idea,” she hums, leaning into his touch. Houdini closes her eyes for a moment before leaning up to kiss him, rising up onto her toes. They’d only been together for a short amount of time, but everything about Jack just feels right to her. She only hopes he feels the same way about her.
“I’ll set up a reservation then, and I’ll come by your office to pick you up. Okay? Then maybe I can be persuaded to come home and take a bit of a break.” He gives her a kiss before guiding her back down the hall to her office. “See you in a bit.”
Oncee he’s back at his desk, he arranges for their dinner, and finishes up what little paperwork he has left.
She turns and waves as she walks down the hall, smiling brightly. He makes her feel so giddy sometimes, she can’t help acting like an absolute fool this way.
Once she was back in her office, she finished tidying up her paperwork and freshens up her makeup. No real point in going through hours of surveillance footage now. Instead, she focused on the folder opened on her computer, organizing the files for the newest mission she had to prepare agents for.
He goes to her office door, watching her work for a moment before knocking on the post and clearing his throat to get her attention.
“You ready, sweetheart?” He asks.
Laura jumps slightly at the noise, focused on watching two small figures on the screen. No matter how many times Jack did that, she would always jump.
“I sure hope so,” she smiles, putting her computer to sleep as she practically hops up from the desk. “Now then, where are we going? Or is it a secret?”

“What, no ‘bite me’ this time, darlin’?” Jack grins down at the woman who just happened to run into him.
Charm her, get away, find someone else.
Charm her, get away, find someone else.
If he took her, someone would be bound to notice her absence. He clenches his jaw to fight the burning sensation in his teeth. Dark brown eyes glance at the crowd passing them by, hoping for an out. Her scent is overwhelmingly sweet, clean, and far too tempting.
“My apologies. I wasn’t looking where I was going. You okay?” He can hear her pulse from just a foot away, a bit of a shock on street full of busy and stressed people.
“Uh –” Houdini is uncharacteristically lost for words, distracted by the looks of the second guy she bumped into. He was tall, dark, and handsome, and it felt like she should be treating him like a gift.
“Well, that was really my fault. Eye level’s sorta low, and I didn’t quite see you coming. At least you’re not like the last asshole,” she says, glancing away for a moment as she wills away the heat rising to her cheeks. “You apologized. And I’m fine. Thanks.”
“I’ll buy you a drink for your troubles. No strings.” He offers. “ ‘ts not everyday I run into someone so polite.” He says, hoping that once they got to a bar, the reek of alcohol might cloud the scent of her blood…yeah. That’ll help him keep himself under control.
Maybe getting into the bar would help. She could keep an eye on everyone around her, maybe check for people looking out of place… plus, he was offering. No strings attached. It felt… genuine.
“If you insist. Got any suggestions on where we should go?” Houdini looks up at him, a half-smile apparent on her face. She quietly thanked her shapeshifting abilities to will the blush from her cheeks – and the gray from her hair.
“Yeah, I know a place. One block down. Windows are clear, usually pretty busy. Lots of people. The drinks are to die for, though.” Enough with the death puns, you’re gonna scare her off.
“You from here? I don’t think I’ve seen you in the area before.” He asks.
“Really? You make it sound like they’ll take my breath away before you ever have a chance…” Houdini laughs - that’s better, now you sound like yourself again. Still a terrible flirt, but a flirt.
“Me? Oh no. Just was nearby, checking out the Distillery on my road trip. Might be my last day here, I haven’t decided yet.”
Better not to lead him on with the idea that I’ll be here forever, not when I’ll be different people for the rest of my time here…
The distillery? Statesman. He hasn’t thought about them in ages. Not since before he was turned. Ah well, best not to get distracted now.
“Maybe you’ll decide to stay, who knows? Now c'mon. Before the real creeps come out.” He offers his arm to her as they walk, the cold skin of his arm guarded by a long flannel sleeve under a denim jacket.
“Only if there’s something really convincing,” she says, taking his arm. “Maybe then I’ll stay.” She looks around for a moment before glancing up at the man she’s decided to follow along.
“Real creeps, huh? Guess I should know your name to make sure you’re not one of them.” She laughs - light and airy - before thinking about the fact that this arm candy is interested in her true face. Huh.
“Call me Jack.” He says. “And yours?” He holds the door for her and takes her over to his usual table. “Get whatever you want. My treat.” He is visibly more relaxed now that her scent is muted.
“Well thank you, Jack,” she smiles. Houdini takes a moment to think - would she really give her name? or just a cover? She didn’t see the harm in giving him at least her first name. He’d probably never see her again after their drinks, though he may see her as someone else...
“Laura.”
Possibly a stupid mistake, but there’s something about him that wants to make her be honest.
“I’ll take a Moscow Mule, please.”
