i think the first thing to do when getting into colours/pallettes is to read a little about the colour wheel and get to know the types of colour combinations that ~work. once you have that information, you can play with it (or ignore it sometimes) as much as you like

i’m kind of at a point where i don’t think about colour schemes and just go with what looks good to me at the time. but my art often goes into analogous colour schemes (colours side by side on the colour wheel). if you’re just starting out or trying to get better with palettes, it might be a good exercise to try limiting your work to variations of 3 colours that fit side by side on the colour wheel

you can also see that i usually go for a more muted colour to go with  my vibrant ones. i think this really helps the vibrant colours pop

it’s also important to think about how colour scheme might influence the colours of the character. in the below drawing with green lighting, what reads as white is actually blue and the skin tone is much greyer than you would expect, but the overall green tone changes how you see these colours.
