Asgore is the first character in Deltarune who's actually treated the Dark Worlds as a lotus-eater Matrix dreamscape, and this is presented to us pretty unequivocally as a miserable moral failure on his end.

His eyes remain firmly fixed on "reality," and he's disinterested in and neglectful of his "perfect family" more or less from its inception. At best, he's "playing along." When Asgore fantasizes, it's about the Light World. Unreal scenarios, sure – parading their body through the streets, getting back with his ex-wife, skateboards with Azzy – but never the Dark World itself. Everything he does, he does in order to capture and kill the Knight, after which he intends to leave the Dark World.

And it sucks! It makes the Seven-Colored Flowers miserable (and we see way more of them than Asgore; our sympathies align naturally with them over him). It doesn't make Asgore happy either, and it certainly doesn't help him fulfill his equally-implausible nostalgic visions of being big hero copman again.

Escapism, nothing. This is why I can't take seriously anyone who suggests Susie's living situation is her running away from the real world. The Dark may be a dream, but treating it as a valueless illusory prison doesn't actually get you any closer to reality.

#pretentious bullshit incoming:#books are really the only viable medium through which to convey their interiority and the scope of their stories #part of this is that i am simply not passionate about the creation of sequential art #so even in my fantasy of unlimited time and energy... even with characters who just talk endlessly eith small bursts of action #they still only really work as written work because they are biased to them by having my hand on the wheel #the second most viable would be a multi-season filmed sitcom. i was only going to say for some of them #but uh. even the flondon ocs could do a wwdits style dark sitcom where the horror is brushed off & it's about their codenpendant antics #port emmerledge/dps trio is the high premise genre sitcom lightly skewering the generic dnd omniculture #that inevitably gets so bogged down in sentimentality for its own characters that it becomes unwatchable #fantasywood theme park just straight up is a parks & recs ass workplace sitcom as is. that's the whole core of it #like it would never get sold or anything because the two romantic leads being kinksters is a side-eye inducing age gap is not marketable #but no one said we had to make it viable in the fantasy #and our former alien ocs that ended up exclusively being the human au of a pnw-based queer friend group... low budget webseries sitcom

idk I can tell that some tumblrinas are not up on fat politics because I see a lot of people saying stuff like “it’s better to be a little fat than waste your life trying to be thin” or like “it’s chic to have a little belly” like okay but there are fat people who are “a lot fat” and have “a lot of belly” which everyone is weirdly silent on all the time. Like the fattest person on earth still deserves to exist in human society with joy and dignity regardless of how they got to that weight or how many health conditions they have as a result of their personal actions…that should be everyone’s baseline here I’m not really sure what’s complicated about it
